Well, now that I have flagstone, I can start building the new stairs. They will be built directly on top of a natural stone outcrop, so there will not be issues with roots pushing up the stairs this time. Except for the flagstone I bought, all the stone I used here was already on the property. Stay tuned for one more video from this project!

It is a stone staircase that fits very naturally. Stone work is very time-consuming.

Hello from Maine. Just found your video. Very impressive i have to do something similar how did you get the risers level with so many different sizes? What tools did you use to shape them if you even had to? Again awesome work dude!
@gordchapman3469

Thanks for watching! Yeah, it's a challenge getting the risers level using this kind of stone; thinknesses vary so much with this stone. Really, it's like a big puzzle! I did very little shaping of the stones, I just tried to find pieces that just naturally fit. Any shaping is done with a masonry hammer.

Thanks for getting back to me. Really appreciated. I guess I'll go get a masonry hammer last time I laid some blue stone I used a regular claw hammer 🔨 took a bit of time. Thanks again

I have some nice 3-4' wide by 3" thick flagstone, and tons of small pieces from our Creek bed. Were built into the side of a hill in finger lakes region of NY. Soil is all roots, stone and clay. Is drainage a big concern when building like this? & what type of cement did you use?

Sounds like some nice pieces of stone you've got there! I would recommend a few things you can do to build it to last longer. Definitely pipe drainage in your case since you are on a hillside with clay. The second thing is wherever you are going to build a wall, dig down several inches to get the more organic soil out of there, and get down to a rocky base, and make sure you get as much root out as you can, then replace soil with a gravel base. Third thing is build the base of the wall almost as wide as the wall is high. So if your wall is going to be 3 feet tall, the wall should be 2-3 feet deep at the base, then taper up to 6-8 inches at the top of the wall. To build your base nice and wide, start with your face stone in front, then behind that, just build it wide with brick, or broken pieces of cement, or stone, if supply is not an issue. My cement is just a mix of sand and Portland cement; 4 to 1 sand-cement mix. I'd like to see the result.

Excellent job. Do you have any reason to be concerned about mortar breaking, specifically where it is attaching to flagstone? Wondering if there are any preventive measures , as I have on occasion seen 'wet set' steps come loose.
@gordchapman3469

Before I lay the flagstone on the bed of mortar, I wet the bottom of the flagstone and rub straight Portland cement until it becomes like a paste. That makes it stick to the mortar really well.
