Marvel puts out comics where the cover ink comes off on your fingers. Alterna won't sell a second hand comic without ironing out some imperfections. Peter, your love for this industry always amazes me.

I have a heat press that I use. I just clamp the book in while it is heated and then turn it off and leave it closed over night. The real trick is cleaning stains off older books.

Wow if you go longer than a couple seconds is it bad for the book? Also how hard are you pressing down with the iron? Gathering up the courage to try this lol! Great video
@alternacomics3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You want to put just a little pressure. Don't go over a spot for more than about 7 to 10 seconds though. It'll cause warping.
@davidterrero22004 жыл бұрын
Hi. How much pressure do you apply while doing a cover and the inner pages? Are you sort of letting the iron's weight apply the pressure and just lightly gliding it along the top? Great tip!
@alternacomics4 жыл бұрын
Light pressure across the whole cover. Slightly more along the parts that have creases.

Yeaaaaah I'm not so sure about this, man. I tried this method with the exact same iron you're using at the exact setting on three books. Didn't do much at all to a Continuity title from the 80s, and didn't work at all on the two modern books I tried it on. It did, however, put heat waving into both the modern books that I'm now hoping will diminish with time. Do yourself a favor, folks, and just buy the press.
@alternacomics4 жыл бұрын
Did you use a Teflon sheet? Did you put a backing board between the cover and the interior? And did you make sure to move the iron around the spine area for just a few seconds? Afterwards, did you press the books overnight with weight at around 10 or more pounds? I've pressed about 500 books this way and never got any of the problems you're mentioning, so I'm curious as to what you did to get those lackluster results. Thanks!
@moodswing44604 жыл бұрын
Could you use some weights (dumbbells) to stack on some books for added weight? I was thinking of trying this but instead of several heavy book, maybe 1 or 2 then some dumbbells.
@alternacomics4 жыл бұрын
You need evenly distributed weight. Not much either. 5 pounds or so is good

Will this help with spine rolls? And I may have missed it, but how long do you leave them under weight?
@alternacomics5 жыл бұрын
Possibly. It seems to help with slight rolling. Haven't tried it with anything too severe. I leave it overnight most of the time. Pressed under about 20 pounds or so. For something like a spine roll, put the backing board under both covers and then iron both sides then leave for a day or two under weight. Should help a lot.

@@alternacomics Thanks. I got around to rebagging and boarding my Amazings a few months ago and things were not great in the early 300s. It was actually kind of depressing. I had a duplicate of one, so I'll give this a try on the rolled copy.

What else besides the teflon sheet can you use?
@alternacomics5 жыл бұрын
I've never used anything else. The Teflon sheets are designed for heat transferring. Anything else that you might use - paper, cloth, etc. has a chance of not working as well or even making things much worse.
@nunyabizwacks67114 жыл бұрын
How about a sheet of something under the teflon to avoid possible damage from the teflon sheet itsself, which ive seen ppl say occasionally happens. Also, what is the success rate of this on modern books, and thicker books? For example, i have a copy of AF #15 1st amadeus cho and it has alot of wrinkles and in the pages as well, but notjing color breaking and i can tell that this particular copy is one that would improve the grade MASSIVELY with a successful press, but at the same time, i cant afford to fuck it up either. Its fairly thick, i think a 50 page book. Also, ive figured out a technique to remove alot of non color breaking spine indentions and thumb indentations without any pressing at all except maybe a little natural pressing in the box. If anyone is interested ill explain it and its very simple, i figured it out on accident and have been doing it ever since. I will say it seems to work the best the newer the comic, especially ones right off the shelf that havent been stored away in a box yet, so its a really good technique when your buying new comics at the store or they give you your pull list and you get then home to find out they have indentations, and my method almost always works. Ive noticed the thumb indentations are actually easier to fix this way than those books that have several all the way down the spine that is caused by a binding defect/bad placed staples, and pages sticking together in a book will also cause this. But you can still drastically improve a book this way. The only reason i havent explained this simple thing to people yet is because i was still contemplating sharing the info on a video and didnt want to see someone else take credit for it because i have never ever seen anyone mention it lol. It may seem petty, but hey thats the world we live in. Alot of ppl out there dont want to share info on pressing so ppl will keep paying them to do it, so im not gonna give em a method to make it even easier, and it fixes slight imperfections that alot of ppl would pay and send their book off to get pressed for anyway. Im sure someone else out there has discovered this but as i said ive never seen it mentioned and im very active in the comic community and content and have even searched for it so i dunno. Anyway sorry for the lomg winded comment, i just really wanna try to fix this book but im not a person thats gonna pay for a pressing even if it badly needs it.
