Old West Vignettes: Massacre at Dragoon Springs

During the completion of the construction of the Dragoon Springs stage stop in September of 1858, 3 men were brutally attacked in their sleep leaving 1 of them dead and 2 dying.
The murderers then turned their weapons on the one remaining man: Silas St. John.
St. John turned out to be more than they bargained for.
This is the heroic tale of Silas St. John: "Of His Stuff the West Was Made."

My family had a cattle ranch in that area. My father was born in 1910. He told me so many stories about his dad and other rancheros and many indians helping to case down cattle rustlers and apaches . Which means enemy. Great stuff. Keep it up. Thank you.

I've flown over this part of the US on an aeroplane at 38,000 feet and you really get a sense of just how remote places like this are when you look out the window and literally see absolutely nothing but the plains and mountains for as far the eye can see, which at that altitude is a lot!

Wow. Those poor guys lingered for 24 hours? (shudder) Just being able to keep the tourniquet tight to avoid bleeding to death is a significant accomplishment. I'm sure he felt awful that he couldn't keep the scavengers away from his friends' bodies, even though he was too weak to do anything. This is an amazing story, well told with demonstrations. Thank you

Well done. It often strikes me not only that most people lack the basic skills of self-sufficiency these days, but that self-sufficiency is actually discouraged in todays society. Everything for and from society may work for the ants, but I am not an ant.

A wonderful site to visit. I lived 3 miles from the station at my ranch house in Dragoon Az. Was able to visit at least once a month. Found some horse harness buckles but left them there. Not legal to remove any objects from a historical site in the Coronado National Forest. But the best way to feel inside you and around you is ,where you sit ( quietly) and watch the sunset, it seems the wind in the Mesquite trees whispers and the stones of the station try and tell you their story.

I went to the Dragoon Spring Station a few years ago. Yea, it's remote. The trail going to it is barely marked. Beautiful scenery.

+InRangeTV I loved that show, have you thought of incorporating something like that as a second old west series? Like one episode could be all about various cap and ball revolvers and another could be shooting long range before the 20th century, sort of a gun tech in the west type deal, I bet everyone here would like that sort of thing. Also cap and ball mud test? That could get interesting lol.

I'm sure they would be a lot more accurate than the original "Wild West Tech". I thoroughly enjoyed the show, but I can't count how many times I was shouting at my tv because WWT got something completely wrong.

Not trying to take away from St. John, but Hugh Glass IMHO epitomizes the toughness not only in body but in spirit of those who tamed the Old West. Mauled so badly by a grizzly that the men he was traveling with left him for dead; he set his own broken leg and crawled 200 miles to the nearest settlement in 6 weeks. After he recovered, he tracked down two of the men who abandoned him and taken his gears, rifle, and knife. No one would had faulted him if he had killed them, but he didn't and actually forgave one of the men who was a young Jim Bridger.

Hugh Jass already had a movie made about him, it's called The Revenant, it's pretty good. I've never heard of this incident before, but I would've loved to have been alive when it happened.

Glass wasn't a western frontierman though, I think that's an important distinction to make considering the vast difference in the environments they operated within. And yes, I used the term operated intentionally.

Great presentation. I live near this location and have visited here many times, ridden my mules to the location of Dragoon Springs and beyond. Each year the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1710 decorates the graves of the Confederates who were killed here by Apaches. A lot of tragic history happened near this location.

Great bit of history. Everyone knows about the OK Corral but it’s these little known stories that to me, describe the true people of the old west. Their determination and courage shows just how tough they truly were. These folks had some real sand! Thank you for this great video. Well done too!

Fantastic vignette again! I hope you gentlemen can keep these up! Maybe you could look into getting a drone to add in a good birds eye view of the spaces you are describing. They are expensive but would really add a lot of depth to this already awesome content.

You could probably make a very adequate film about this story below the 40 minute mark, it doesn't need to be that much longer. Hell, you wouldn't even need that much of a budget either.
