I actually really like both styles of painting models but It all comes down to preference in my opinion. I know some people who prefer doing it the old way and some who prefer the newer methods but it really doesn't matter to me. We're all enjoying the same hobby!

A lovely trip down memory lane. When I got into miniature painting and warhammer originally I'd already been building quite a number of aircraft kits, so was fortunate to have more than the average tools available as a kid/teenager in the early 90s. I have always said that there is always things to learn from other modelling disciplines, especially military modelling for wargaming, though even model railways can give inspiration, especially in terrain techniques.

This is a... bizarre video for me to watch, as someone who's been painting for about 30 years now. The accurate description of the premise here is, "Let me compare how I painted miniatures as a child with very limited access to tools and paints, to how an adult with far greater access to tools and paints and more knowledge does things." Thirty years ago we weren't doing one single coat, much less twenty years ago. People knew full well what highlights and shading were. Aside from washes, I remember glazes and inks distinctly. Inks were fun because you could use them creatively in a similar way to Contrast paints. I remember experimenting and using Brown Ink over a white basecoat to act as dark leather. But I also would use Brown Ink over, say, Snakebite Leather to give quick shading to fur on Boars. A lot of people talk up using Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade washes over models for quick-and-dirty shading, but about 20 years ago we already had that method. I can't remember what it was that people would dip their minis in (before Army Painter released a straight up "dip" for miniatures), but the cleaner way of doing it was using Tamiya Smoke, which had a similar effect to what Nuln Oil does, only it was a bit shiny and would be kind of sticky until it fully dried. Wish I had better photos of when I was painting up some models. For a really good look at GW miniature painting from 20 years ago, I pulled out my copy of "How To Paint Citadel Miniatures" from 2003. Of course it mentions palettes, though not wet palettes yet. Desk lamp with special note for "daylight" bulbs for best lighting. A load of various modeling tools. In the section of paints it mentions inks and varnishes. Covers the usual techniques like drybrushing, blending, highlighting, mixing shades of paint to ease transitions, using glazes (I love the example of a Guardian painted orange, drybrushed white, then a yellow ink glaze over it to create yellow armor with strong shading), layering, extreme highlights, "staining", stippling, thinning paints, washes... (Fun note, it includes the idea of a "guide wash," basically the modern equivalent would be washing Agrax Earthshade over white to help show where all the detail is.) So yeah, this is a plenty fun look at "What can I do with my limited knowledge and availability then, versus what I'd have access to and knowledge of now?" But not even close to accurately showing how a lot of painters actually painted their models at the time. It wasn't as "stone age" as people seem to think.

I'll be honest I'm 27 and painted my first model much like you did as a kid but with good lighting... Which I knew I should thin my paints but did not know how to... I just learned recently that you dap you brush from the water to the paint and pull it aside... I just trying to mix paint into the water well like paint to paint... Now I know better. Which yes when you only have a "Base" Coat to work with it can take much longer like my model took me 13 hours half way though my paint sceme and I just though it was the mistakes and lack of brush control.

To paraphrase Monty Python: “You were lucky. Back in the 1970s we didn’t even have acrylics.” Or at least nobody used them. It was enamels all the way. Brushes were something of a nightmare to clean, and the paint dried to a tough inflexible layer that often flaked off of any bendy bits in the miniature. Also, nobody knew about washes. At most you would do layering and sometimes a little drybrushing.

I fondly remember the first two minis (metal) I painted as a kid, using Liquitex brand tube acrylic paints then slathering gloss varnish over. So much bright white on one of them (with a line of black trim). Every now and then I search an old box for them. But maybe it’s better that I just keep the memory of them as being perfect 😄

Given I still have a few pots of the 1990s washes and use them fairly often and was taught a lot of behind the scenes tricks of the studio team whilst I worked in another area of the company around 2000... it's fun to see the emulation of an inexperienced paint technique but all the tools and tricks were already there (and in use) even back in the 90s amongst more experienced painters.

Well, the point of learning how to paint is to face the thing that you previously did an understand why it's not good (or suck, in the worst case scenario). I remember my first use of wash, it made an ugly reult on the skin, as nobody explained me the process of going back to paint highlights (something like 30 years ago ^^). So, during years, I never used washes, and discover by myself the principle of layering and highlighting. Of course, had I got youtube and tutorials back in the days, I would get it all way faster. On the other hand, learning patiently by yourself helps you to discover your style, your preferences and get to your very own way. Now, as I went back to the miniature hobby as an adult, I use the mix of "official" techniques and colors choices and advance principles like color theory and opposite colors, using whashes, inks and various paints from different brands and getting my own variations, color schemes and personal style. So, thank you guys to brought me back to my teenager years ^^ !

Lol, I too was a child of divorce Dave. I played Nids as a kid and at 13 disturbed some people at my LGS with my plans for the Hive Tyrant. I was asking if people had extra guardsman bits because I wanted to make a meat nest for the Hive Tyrant to protect, I was gonna put ripper swarms in there too and have the Hive Tyrant feeding them with other flesh. I still have messed up army ideas (Thinking of doing a GSC army inspired by the LA homeless and skid row) but nothing that is in bad taste in a gory way.

I would have liked to seen Dave paint the terminator using the same tools he did, but not limit himself to the globby one coat painting. I think the result would have been night and day. I think technique is way more important to outcome. Tools don't instantly make you good (at anything). They just make doing a thing easier using the knowledge and experience you have.

So this is a fun video, but also not that true to the good old days. The pigment opacity of modern paints. Including Vallejo, is much more opaque then late 90s/early 20s GW paint. An I the only one that started with craft paints and did not move to citadel paints until i had been collecting for almost 10 years. Course I started collecting GW minis in 1989, so... I am old.
