The Stanley No 78 Hand Plane was a staple in every carpenter's tool box of the past. This one, likely around 100 years old had seen a lot in its life and was due for a new life.
To support the channel, below are some of the tools, equipment, and products used in the restoration and filming of this restoration along with Amazon affiliate links to them.

Amusingly, as you mentioned your wife teaching piano, I heard piano (Starwars theme) and thought 'wow! your wife is teaching someone the same tune that my son is learning...!' - Then I realised it was my son hahaha... Great video, I've just found a No. 78 in the deep dark corners of a shed I bought. Excited to clean it up - wish I had a sandblaster! Cheers

I restored one of these a few weeks ago and it was a nightmare by hand ,not as old as yours but complete, I Great tip is to use a wooden chopstick to clear the cutting iron as they block very fast during use. Using a screwdriver or similar runs the risk of nicking the cutting edge. Great restoration.

Meanwhile, inside your house, your wife is tell her students "every once in a while you're going to hear an air compressor or a bench grinder. It's just the sounds of our house." Great stuff as always.

I have one of this type of plane complete, recently given to me. Never used however about 20 yrs old I say. Until watching your restoration I never gave it any thought. The paint, clear coat and finishing Stanley recently put on these made them look cheap. Soon I'll pull it out and refinish it to make it look better and feel better in the hand. Thanks, great work.

I'm super jealous of the sandblasting cabinet my friend. Now you just need to break out the copper paint and detail the lettering on that plane and we'll have the "Old Shove"l Finishing Touch. Good to see you back bringing those old tools to life. -Will

I rarely do any project without using my 78 at some point, the best £7 I ever spent and it came requiring no work at all. I really like the idea of painting a Stanley as a Record. Kai W used to use cameras with the wrong strap, so he’d have a Nikon strap on a Canon and visa versa, it’s the same way of playing with people heads. I’d keep an eye for a depth fence, it’s useful for not just getting the right depth but to guarantee it’s all level. It never reaches depth at the same time across your work and you’ll get a couple of passes with the fence where you’ll take just little bits of different areas. Congrats on the new gear, I know it’s going to be useful for you. A very enjoyable video.

A nice restoration. Well done. I have restored some Stanley-Bailey bench planes which were in much worse condition. I am glad the screws came out without stripping. Likely BS Whitworth thread if they had to be replaced. Not easy to find other than Stanley selling them as a high priced spare set. I had to get such a set for earlier restorations before I got my metal lathe, so I can now machine Whitworth hardware. I like the blue and copper contrast. The plane can also be used as a shoulder plane to clean up the cheeks and shoulders of tenons. Dave.

Excellent job! A few months ago I happened to come across a Sargent model 187 rabbet plane and did a restore on it. I also used a sand blaster and it came out beautiful (Although I did not polish up the unpainted areas - might have to go back and do that now that I've seen yours). I took some before, during, and after pictures but did not do any video of it.

Nicely done. These are good planes, especially the older ones. Typically it is cheaper to buy one with all the parts than try to put them all together afterward. I have about 6 of these from various makers and only have two complete. There is a seller on eBay who makes reproduction parts, but again cheaper to buy as a complete set. With the blade, you almost have no useable length left. Not trying to be negative, just honest with this blade. Keep an eye out for a full-length blade to extend the life of the tool. To advance the blade forward you would lightly tap the round end. To square it up with the mouth /sides of the plane, you would tap on the sides near the top. The round part of the blade sits just below the "lever cap" so it makes it difficult to adjust at this point. I'm a sucker for these old planes and trying to bring them back to life. I have a wooden plane most people would have junked that turned out to be a decent user once I was finished. You learned a lot about restoring the plane and you will learn much more as you keep moving forward with these restorations. Keep up the good work!

Why do people seem to prefer the 78 over the 181? I found an old 181 at an antique store and while researching online I found a little on the 181 but much more info on the 78. My plane is cool too. Right? They look the same

nice job. This is a rabbet plane, for mking rabbet joints. Can also be used to make other kinds of joints like dado joints if you want one that is no narrower than it is. Now, for anyone that doesn't know better, never ever ever never no time no how set the plane down on the blade side, seems like it's the natural thing to do, but don't. lay it down, and if you don't plan on using it, withdraw the blade so if somebody comes along and sets it on it's face, the blade won't get damaged or dulled. Every time I go into a thrift or the like and see them setting on the blade face, I want to punch somebody. for doing it. I think this could use some fancying up. I'd rather have seen the background black, but no shame in using what you've got. You could take a small flat block and sand the Stanley letters and numbers, just shining up the face of them, leaving the sides and background painted. That would go a long way toward fancying it up. Also the face could be polished to a higher level. Lets face it, nobody is really going to use it as a workaday tool any more, so being a bit fancier won't hurt. You maybe should have plated this one. Nickel plate would be appropriate.

Its not a hand plane its a rabbet plane. It wil do a very bad job on normal planing. its not intend to do that. Original Stanley black would be a nicer color in mine opinion for the rabbet plane.Sandblasting machined parts is not a good idea.
