Commenting a bit late, but here's a recommendation for dealing with wind. Bring lots of binder or bulldog clips. I use a few clips to hold down the corners of my page. More clips keep the "finished" pages closed in the other side of the sketchbook. Another clip or two holds a shop cloth to dab the brush. I've also used a long rubber band to hold down the pages in wind. It's usually breezy here so I just assume I will need to manage flapping pages. This is a great sketching video for the encouragement provided. Sketching outside really does make me want to go out more and sketch more!

As a beginner artist, idea of a sketchbook has been on my mind. There’s a hesitation on what I would paint outdoors as there are so many things. Through this video you’ve helped break this down and showed us how to simplify, find a simple composition and have fun…while it’s an integral part of learning. You’re a wonderful teacher, thanks for the video

Sketching is one of the first things I consider. Order alongside shading. Everything begins it's natural flow once I begin. I like different sizes of paper. I'll try them all. Oliver is encouraging, thanks. 😊

I love you simplify mixing by using what you already had and add to it. It's quick and creates harmony without overthinking every individual color to use.

Thank you so much Oliver for your introduction into building a watercolor sketchbook and how to use it. Myself, I do exactly have shown and I’ve doing this for several years. I use the journal as a means to testing subject matter for large scale paintings. Peace be with you my friend.

Thank you Oliver, I really appreciated watching how you approach plein air work. I really love working outdoors but my results are never as good as those I produce at home. From watching you, I think I may be rushing too much. I work full time, so getting out to paint is something I have to squeeze in but I think I’m not doing it justice by taking shortcuts and rushing. I’m getting on in years so recording memories is important and when .I look at my plein air journals I recall such detail about that day. It is truly amazing how it seems painting acts like a video recording. Is that because of the detailed observation?

This was really lovely. I was inspired after watching it last weekend to go out a sketch along our riverfront, capturing the water, trees and parklands along the riverbank, and of course, one of the bridges. This is on style I normally work in but I think that is because it intimdates me. I see a lot of value challenging myself with the approach you demonstrated here.

This was nice encouragement to be a little more free with what I decided to do in my sketchbook. I think I've been trying to make it more of a "journal" type, but my problem is that I'm not very good (yet). So I'm never happy with my paintings, and that makes me hesitant to put anything down. Now I sit here with a pristine sketchbook but not making very much progress with my skills. I'm going to change that today.

Thank you for this very inspirational and helpful video. I see you are a fan of heavy metal palettes when painting plein air. I suppose they are more resilient than other types of palette. I've been considering buying that Loxley Heavyweight metal box palette, I love the combination of deep and flat mixing wells. I bought a cheaper, small, plastic pallete by Frank Herring, it also has deep wells. It's a handy pallete for outdoor sketching.

As I look back at my old sketches, I see a lot of disharmonious things from the past: the shape of a chair, a lampshade or an attempt to capture a likeness of someone. Adrian Hill in his book, How to Draw, encourages us to draw everyday objects from different angles, which I find very useful. I will have to buy myself a new sketchbook instead of focusing on ‘finished’ paintings. Thanks again.

Hi Oliver. Your sketchbooks look great but are way too polished to say so. Full of finished sketches. Mine are a mix and match of everything. Preliminary sketches, notes, notans, finished sketches, finished paintings, comments and notes and thoughts all into my sketchbooks. I use also simultaneously many different sketchbooks with some of them being on my desk and other in my bags. There was a time that I was trying to finish each and every sketchbook and I've even wrote the date I've started to sketch into each one of them but I didn't manage to keep up. The good thing though is that I can remember where is what so I don't lose the plot. But my sketchbooks are a very important part of my creative process and I don't care to put them in order because I don't want to interrupt the stream of my thoughts. And I don't show them in their entirety anywhere. I just show some of the sketches that I consider more interesting on my website. But never a whole sketchbook. My thoughts are mine and I don't want anyone to know them or evaluate them artistically or with any other way.

@@oliverpyle-ourlandscape4442 I mean that all the sketches are finished, all at the middle of the page or the spread pages with the same layout neat and in chronological order. A sketchbook that is suitable for presentation or even publishing too something that is good. I'm not saying that negatively. It is not bad to have everything in order. In fact I wonder how you manage to keep your sketchbooks so neat because I personally find that an impossible thing to achieve. My sketchbooks are in a complete and utter mess. There is no way to have f.e ten finished landscape sketches in a row in the same sketchbook because somewhere in between I switch from landscape sketching to some other idea that comes to my mind. A portrait or a botanical illustration, a notan for some other irrelevant painting along with some swatches and notes for something entirely different. I've joined btw your fantastic forum. It is a great idea to run a forum. It is so difficult to find nowadays a private place to talk about art. Most art discussions are taking place on social media where it is impossible to follow a discussion due to the way that social media platforms are constructed. I mean the unlimited scrolling layout. There is no way to find and follow a discussion in social media and I'm not either way the social media kind of person. I don't have time to retain social media accounts. The only place were I keep in touch with fellow artists is here because youtube though it is huge its subject oriented. You can comment and discuss under a video that has a very specific subject. Here we talk about sketchbooks elsewhere about paints etc. That works!
