Yesterday I found this Olivetti STUDIO 46 in a second hand market in perfect condition, it looked like it had just left the factory, with original case and dust cover. Only €34, it would have been a crime not to buy it!

Fun fact: Stephen King wrote Carrie, The Shinning, Saloms Lot, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and IT all on typewriter. Even in his book Misery the true hero of the story was that typewriter.

I do like a good basket shift. I have a 1961 Olympia SM4 with gorgeous Congress Elite typeface, but the carriage shift makes me crazy with fatigue! :) And Olympia is one of the lighter carriage shifts. Very nice Olivetti you have. I've always wanted one but have never been able to find one affordable and available at the same time.

I also have an SM4 (1958!) and was actually using it last night and agree that using it is something of a gym routine for the fingers! The carriage shift seems heavy in comparison with the Studio 46's basket shift.

What is the first button at the top left "MR" for?

That's the margin release key. So if you get to the right margin and need to type an extra character or two, you press MR which releases the margin. Hope this helps! Anthony

In the word "of" - Sphinx oF black quartz, judge my vow. 🙂

@@mezmarionybarra I think it's because sometimes when we read something, we "hear" it phonetically, so in this case you hear "ov" and think of V rather than F.

Would you say it’s a descendant of the Studio 44 size-wise?

Hi Sean! Yes I think they are very close in size. I understand the 44 is 30cm wide at the front versus 34cm for the 46, so the 46 is just slightly wider. They are both 38cm front to back and both about 12cm to 13cm high.
