The Olympic Cauldron is lit at an atmospheric opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic Games on 27 July 2012.
Every two years, the world's finest athletes gather at the Olympic Games - a spectacular celebration of sporting excellence that captures the attention of billions of people around the world. However, the Games are about much more than just sport. They bring the Olympic values to life and provide a global arena for a unique combination of sport, culture, education and ceremonies.
At the Olympic Games in London 2012, about 10,500 athletes from 204 countries compete in 26 different sports, comprising 302 medal events. Whether athletes win a medal or not, they can forever call themselves Olympians. The sporting competitions are undoubtedly the central focus of the Olympic Games and participating in the Games is the ultimate goal for most athletes.
Every edition has its own story to tell and will be remembered for some truly remarkable performances from sporting legends such as Jesse Owens, Abebe Bikila, Jean-Claude Killy, Nadia Comaneci, Katarina Witt, Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, to name just a few.

We were so proud to watch this having spent 4 months creating the Copper Petals. They were designed by Thomas Heatherwick and put together with the mechanics of the cauldron by Stage One Construction. Two incredibly creative and talented forces.

This is, in my opinion, the best Olympic Cauldron in *history*. From the music to the lighting it's absolutely spectacular. The Cauldron itself is beautiful in that Simplistic and Peaceful sought of way and what it represents perfectly emulates the very meaning of the Olympic Games, the coming together of all nations. Sorounded by all of the Athletes too really pushed the idea home. All of this coupled with Calibans Dream made it such an amazing sight. London may not have been on the same technical caliber as past Opening Ceremonies, but they definitely delivered a Cauldron one of a kind.

the big difference between london ceromony and the previous ones i think is they didn't focus on outdoing previous olympiads with the wow factor but rather focused on telling a story and having meaning. this ceremony was not as grandiose or epic as previous ceremonies but, I might be biased on this, it was much more emotionnal i think is the word.

bakersteven3 Barcelona wasn't a fake! It was made on purpose, because the arrow couldn't heat the botton of the cauldron, the arrow only had to fly over it to turn it on, wich was full of gas, so it reacted with the flames of the arrow. I know It better than anyone because my family's company created the Arrow and told me everything about the ceremony. Sorry for my bad English

That Flame is THE LIGHT OF KNOWLEDGE (remember Prometheus). Do not believe the lies that say that Olimpic games are full of satanic signs. It's ALL the opposite. That why you like to see and to enjoy the NEW ERA (that started at 1992, at Barcelona. Those games were special...) But the best is yet to come. IMAGINE a World as ONE, in Brotherhood and Peace. You know what makes me most proud of this entire thing, how we made what was OUR moment, the main thing of the opening ceremony, the lighting of the Olympic flame an inclusive thing. The petals all being inscribed with all the countries names and "London 2012" that they were given back at the end of the Olympics. We could easily have just made it about Britain, best of us. But that's not how we do things, that's one of the MANY reasons why no games will be better than 2012. Spend the billions and build the stadia, but it's the thought that London put in that Beijing and Rio, or any other Olympic City wouldn't do that makes us who we are. Proud Brit 🇬🇧

+Manish Ghoorah But if a Paris opening ceremony is held at the Stade de France, around 20% of the local volunteers are likely to be Maghrebi, based on population statistics for the Saint-Denis area. The only way London 2012 might be topped is if London succeeds again in its potential bid for the 2032 or 2036 games. I know it's a bit selfish but I want the Olympics back so badly. A true way of bringing our fractured country back together again to celebrate inclusivity and what makes us great not what divides us. I get emotional thinking about London 2012 even in 2020. And if we're being honest we've already built everything so we could probably host again for next to nothing

Britain at it's very best! Amazing idea for a cauldron and the way it was lit. Not a person in the land could fault this whole ceremony and I am proud to be British watching this again. We have set the bar, and Rio has a lot to do to beat this opening ceremony.

See? This is the reason so many nations admire the English. That one touch of having all the builders of the Olympic stadium as the honor guard.... that's so amazing to me. What an honor. It wasn't essential. But it was very, very touching. And I bet it made all their efforts worthwhile.

I remember 2011 being a really tough year for me, with crippling anxiety and struggling to settle into my first year of university. By the end of my first year, summer 2012, I was back home for the summer with the prospect of a better new year at uni, the sun was shining, and me and the family settled down to watch the ceremony on tv. Just weeks prior, excitement had built after seeing the Olympic torch pass through my Uni town, and hearing of the incredible plans they had for the Opening ceremony. All I can say is that night on tv was one of the best experiences of my life, something that so wonderfully captured the things I love about having grown up in this country - James Bond, Mr Bean, the wealth of music history, the ode to our rich history through hundreds of years, the bit with the WW1 & WW2 soldier's tribute bringing tears to my eyes. It was all just magic. Things got better in the years after, like I'd hoped, but also worse with my father sadly passing away. But I'll never forget that golden summer of 2012 where we were all together as a family, claiming, as I'm sure my fellow UK folk can attest, to something that was ours and represented the strands of history and pop culture that have shaped us.
