I will test how the some what old lens still holds up. Olympus M.Zuiko12mm f2.0 is very good wide angle prime. Its quite light weight and small. Olympus M.Zuiko lens line up have several options for a wide angle lenses. So far this Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED12mm f2.0 is the only prime option. The other options are zooms lenses.

I had that lens on loan back in my Olympus days, and it gave me unforgettable close up footage of puppies I had at the time. If I'd shoot with MFT these days, this lens would be a must be in my bag. I do have the equivalent today and it's my most used lens...

I love my Oly 12mm. It's a great travel lens, so small, so versatile. I took great shots from Hong Kong or New York with it. Never felt the need to use the hood it resists quite well to flare. Used it on treks in China, or on top of mountains in the Alps. It goes everywhere as it fits in a very small space. Some of my best shots are taken with it. Quality is not *absolutely* perfect if you do pixel peep, but who cares, once displayed or printed at normal sizes the the pics are fantastic.

This is the best video for demonstrating the benefits of using a lens hood I've seen, simply because you demonstrated it at 3:06, the perspective of seeing the light from a source, other than our individual eyes.

Just got one today, at a very very good price from a local shop. The lens is a real beauty. Very well made indeed. The image quality I find it to be really good, even at f:2.0. 12mm with f2 is a blessing for my E-M5, along with the 17 and 25 1.8. Thank you for your good review Peter (was decisive).

Hello Peter, thank you for this review. Hope that Olympus is going to release a fast premium or pro wide / ultra wide lens with a weather sealing. 7-8 & 12mm would be great. Also hope to see a PEN F Mark ii with weather sealing as well (PEN F & the variety of lenses were the reasons I chose MFT over other systems). Best regards from Germany

Great video as always. One correction, the widest prime for mft, e widest prime is the laowa 7.5mm f/2, which is not a fish eye. You might want to review that as well.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 5 жыл бұрын
The angle of view of the M.Zuiko 8mm f1.8 Pro lens is 180 degrees. Laowa 7.5mm has a 110 degree angle of view and it is the widest "normal" dwide angle lens you can get for MTF. Good point and thanks for mentioning that. It would definitely be an interesting lens to test. I need to see if I can get a hold of it.

Why should a lens hood be rectangular? Sure, the sensor is, as you said. But it's not protecting the sensor from direct sunlight, it's protecting the lens. And what shape is the lens? Round. Therefore, I'd argue, lens hoods should all be round. The only reason to make them rectangular would be that it's an inherently stronger shape, more likely to sustain impacts when made of plastic.

Thanks. I have actually planned to test both of those. I have borrowed the STF-8 from Olympus Finalnd, but have not get around to test it properly. FL-900R I do have, but use it very seldom. I’m still learning, maybe someone can help me understand. I have an Oly M.Zuiko 7-14 f2.8 Pro lens for my real estate work. I have read that the advantage of prime lenses is that they produce a sharper image because there is less glass. Yet you say that this prime lens is soft around the edges at f2.0. So is it sharper than my lens at f2.8? I’m just trying to understand why anyone would buy this prime (for that much money) if it doesn’t outperform a good zoom in sharpness. Is it because it can go to f2.0 and provide shallower depth of field? Oh, and thank you for posting this video! KZfaq is a great way to learn when good people put out solid content like this.
@TyeeCostaRica
@TyeeCostaRica 5 жыл бұрын
It's not because they have less glass it's that unlike zooms they are not compromised by their need to perform over a variety of focal length. They are purpose built for one FL.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 5 жыл бұрын
The 12mm f2.0 is a lot smaller than the 7-14mm f2.8. That is one reason. The other one is the slightly shallower depth of field. The slight softness in the edges does not matter in many situations, but in your line of work it might. Thanks for the comment!

I love 24 mm equivalent so when this 12mm came out I was keen to try it. After an hours testing indoors, I resisted buying it. I could not "get" the f/2 in my style of shooting because of shallow dof. After all these years, I still don't have a 12. I wish I would buy the 12-32 Panasonic or the 12-35 Panasonic but I have the 14mm Panasonic because it was an opportunity and not expensive. But the 14mm fails to be my favourite

@@ForsgardPeter Just the usual array of AIS Nikkors, nothing exotic. 24mm f/2.0, 50mm f1.4, 55mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor, 105 mm f/2.5 (one of my favorites) and 135mm f/2.8 primes. Also the 80-200mm f/4 zoom. I also have the original Four-Thirds Olympus Zuiko 50mm f/2.0 Macro which is probably the lens I love the most and it can still auto focus with the electronic adapter. Each of these wonderful lenses originally cost me between $150 and $350 USD, but that was long ago.

Your review was so informative that after consulting a couple of lens sites I tracked down one in mint condition, silver (to use on my Pen 7 which I use as a walk-around camera) for $570. free shipping and even the original Oly bayonet lens hood. I think they are meant for each other. Monday should bring the delivery of an OMD E1 Mark II. After playing with an OMD 10 MII and a OMD 5 MII for 6 months I was ready to pull the trigger on one with a good Black Monday price. So now I have to sell a load of mint or close to mint Nikon and Pentax gear. I want to keep a D750, a D500 and a Pentax K3 (very underrated).Those combined with the Oly lot will make a good selection for about anything. Any thoughts?
