Both lenses are interessting. I like the possibility to blur out the background more. However i think those very small and flat lenses with f/1.8 are extremly charming and make you feel flexible, mobile and may be even more free and independent when you use them (i know that sounds a bit ridicoulus).

Great video! One of the attractions of the Zuiko range is that the standard lenses perform very well and you don't have to spend $$$$$$s to get an excellent lens. Of course you lose the beautiful build of the Pro series and apertures are slower but if the max aperture is not a problem then the standard series are probably all the lens most will be need. On the other hand I find something addictive about the feel and handling of the pro series, they're beautifully made with an oily smoothness.

Great video once again! I have been wondering about the difference of these lenses for a long time. Good to hear your opinion. The pro looks huge and heavy compared to the 1.8. One more thing is that the 1.8 fits better for situations where you don't want your camera to attract too much attention.

The 1.8 is my first preference. That 46mm filter thread is important, and it is a far better weight than the 1.2 Pro and takes very little room in the camera bag. Takes great photographs. The fact that it is a much better price is just icing on the cake.

I'm not sure if I'm going to prefer the 1.8 version anymore. If it's combined with E-M10 camera for example for travel and street then is perfect, but for my E-M1 II, the PRO version is the way to go. The weather sealing is must have of course, but there is something else that you're not mentioning in your video and this is subject rendering. The 1.2 version is giving a little 3D pop, especially if you shoot environmental portraits or something like that and the 1.8 version is lacking that and this is the main benefit for me. Will be glad if you test it and share the results.
@ForsgardPeter

Thank you for the comparison the 17mm isn't my go to focal length hence I still have my m.zuiko 17mm f2.8. I can only say when I have used it I haven't found it to be as bad as people have made out. For me the trio of f1:1.2 lenses are not on my shopping list as size and weight takes priority with being disabled. And this is where 4/3 comes into its own for me 😊👍🏻

Good overall comparison, Peter. Extra stop and weather sealing would be major performance factors. Would have liked to see comparison of image sharpness at wide open apertures. Histograms in camera are JPEGS - wonder if there would be differences when RAW histograms are compared in Lightroom.

The ointment in the fly is Lumix Leica 15mm F1.7, slightly wider but nothing a step or two closer to the subject can't fix, coupled with hugely superior image quality than the Zuiko 1.8 and hugely more compact than F1.2... Even though I like Oly cameras & lens but the Lumix Leica primes seem to get one over Oly all the time. They hit the sweet spot for size, image quality and brightness Pany 25mm F1.4 vs Oly 25mm F1.2, Pany 15mm F1.7 vs Oly 17mm F1.8/17mm F1.2, Pany 12mm F1.4 (costs a lot more but a different class) vs Oly 12mm F2...

Might repositioning the f/1.8 lens back a little - maybe only a step back from the subject - offset two of the pro lens advantages? I’m wondering if the f/1.8 field of view and bokeh might be indistinguishable.

I went the other way about 10 years ago and bought the Panasonic 20mm instead for mostly urban photography . Like you said / suggested this tiny depth of field fade is over done IMO . You can add blur PP; but not remove it . Without looking I'm not sure of the Fstop --- F1.7 maybe; never use it . Getting in close: I feel the crop tool (used sensibly) is the best and least expensive macro/close up lens available but this is hard to explain to the pixel counters. Best way to keep more depth of field also . Way off topic: my experiment with using the original JPG files is so surprising with very few raw/dng files seeing the inside of Lr5 . Working well ; thank you again :)

As many have mentioned, great set of videos. But my gripe is the price point for the "pro" version I cant help but feel that Olympus have pushed it to far. Currently March 2019, the 17mm f1.8 is retailing at £449 and the 17mm f1.2 £1,199 a difference of £750. Which I think is far to much. If the 17mm f1.2 was double the price of the 17mm f1.8 then fair enough, I would probably buy a set of prime pro lenses to go with my EM1 X. Cheers.

Loving the content Peter. At the UK Photo Show last week I took my 17 1.8 (and an SD card) to test against the 1.2 Pro. The Pro lens blew me away! Significantly sharper at 1.8 and incredibly sharp at 1.2. Beautiful rendering and I also noticed the same as you pointed out, with both lenses at the same aperture and settings, the Pro lens is a little brighter. With both wide open, same s/s and Auto ISO, the Pro is one stop quicker, the ISO on the Pro being half that of the 1.8 (I had to see it to believe it) which is a huge benefit transforming low light work from potentially using 6,400 to 3,200 which is quite significant. Amazing lens that I will rent for the odd wedding I do. But I like small and I’d love Olympus to just improve the 17 1.8 IQ to that of the 45 1.8, and it would be a killer lens :-)

I suspect that the Olympus f1.8 primes have higher T stops (light transmission) compared with the f1.2 primes at the same F stops (aperture).

The 17 f/1.8 is one of my favorite lenses. The small size and manual clutch are great, and It pairs well with both the PEN E-Pl10 and the OM-5. The price point and size of the 17mm f/1.2 hold me back from getting this lens. I use the 20mm f/1.4 Pro instead, and that is a nice lens. A small 17mm pro lens would be great. Perhaps a small 17mm f/2 weather-sealed lens?

To me a similar comparative decision is The Olympus 17 f1.8 versus the Leica 15 f1.7. I would be interested in your reactions. Although I prefer the perspective of the 17, it is so soft in comparison that using it seems like sabotaging opportunities.

A comparation of the 'depth of field' would also useful, I assume this real reason for the pro lens. If convert it to full format the 1.8 is a 3.6 and the 1.2 is a 2.4 which should make a big difference to differnciate the object from background.

One stop advantage, 3 times the weight. and what about the price probably twice more? You don't go against physics, the wider the aperture the heavier and bigger the lens, maybe FF body and an equiv. lens combo would be better here. It gives you more flexibility.

Thanks for posting this. A Finn who says it is cold and he wants to go inside? It must have been freezing! Keep up the very informative blogs. This is exactly what i want. Comparing lenses, explaining lenses, showing the various functions of the cameras. So many other blogger's only talk about why your equipment isn't good enough and you need to buy different stuff - this is wearying and pointless, and takes away from the joy of photography, replacing it with anxiety and equipment envy. Thanks. By the way, was that a cafe built out of a shipping container behind you?

Very useful comparison ! Thank you !! :-) Based on the information in your video, I have decided to go for the F1.8 version plus the hood since, for possible harsh conditions during travel, I have the 14-150mm weather sealed lens for general outside "tourism" use. The 17mm would be for street photography in nice conditions and for inside at restaurants or community functions to take pictures of people. The remaining "hole" in my compact lens collection for travel would be a light weight fast lens for use inside art galleries and museums (to photograph paintings and artifacts) where flash is generally not allowed. Any suggestions as to which lens would be best suited for that museum/gallery use ?

Just got the 17mm f/1.2 lens. Bought it used, but in perfect condition. Got it for a ridiculous price. It's like the seller had one of my arms behind my back forcing me to say yes. And then the seller threw in two very nice B+W ND filters....and that was like putting my other arm behind my back. I couldn't throw my money at the seller fast enough, but it was hard to reach my wallet with both arms being held behind my back. Haha. So, why the f/1.2 and not the f/1.8? I will use this lens for astrophotography. It's a full stop faster than the f/1.8....and it's actually very usable at f/1.2. Some high speed lenses are quite soft wide open. This f/1.2 is not. It's peak sharpness is at f/2, at least in my case. But plenty sharp at 1.2. As for the 17mm being not wide enough for astrophotography, thats what panorama stitching is for. Take a couple of pictures and tie them together...not a problem. As for the weight...my other cameras are full frame, so this lens is not something I consider at all heavy. And the filter size of 62mm...perfect. Already have the 12-40mm pro zoom...which is 62mm.

Your correct, Olympus states that the feathered Bokeh for their 17mm, 25mm and 45mm Pro F 1.2 lenses only works at apertures F1.2 and F1.4. So if you want the feathered bokeh look with there Pro primes you pretty much have to shoot wide open. Feathered bokeh just means that transitions are a little more subtle between objects in the out of focus area in comparison to a lens with "standard" bokeh at the same F stop.
