In the Lotus JPS car is Elio de Angelis who died in a testing crash in 1986. Briefly walking behind them saying, Hi Bailey, is 1976 F1 champion James Hunt who was commonly referred to as Hunt the Shunt hence Baileys reply, Hello Shunt.

Elio tragically died in a 1986 testing accident at Paul Ricard in his Brabham. Driving this car for the TV commercial is John Brindley, who owned the car. It’s actually not even a Lotus as the team didn’t have a car available for the shoot. It’s the ex Jochan Mass Mach which ran in Rothmans colours in 1982. Painted in the JPS colours, no one spotted the switch! I only know all this because I headed up the Olympus advertising team at the time and was at the shoot. The opening shot is Zandvoort but this was all filmed over a couple of days at Brands Hatch.

Lotus didn't have a car available for the filming. This is the ex Rothmans F1 March rebranded and actually driven by John Brindley. No one ever spotted the substitution!
