In the early 90s I worked as a photographer for AutoTrader magazine. I shot several hundred frames weekly for many years with my Olympus mju/stylus. I still own both the ones I used daily. Only failure was if the sliding cover got knocked out of alignment. Otherwise great little rugged camera. Perfect for one handed deployment and operation, but certainly not worth the high prices it’s commanding today. $/€75 at the absolute most.

The Olympus XA is a lot better than the Mju II (manual focusing rangefinder, aperture priority), and is made to last way longer! Sometimes the needle in the finder is not accurate, but most of the time the exposure is right (2 cells in this camera) And if the patch of the rangefinder is getting a little difficult to see, put a pink filter on the finder... :)
@NicosPhotographyShow4 жыл бұрын
Also a blue sticker works well. The XA is great, not so automatic but a great lens on a small body.

I recently sold a couple Stylus Zooms for cheap. Really nice cameras, but I settled on a Sure Shot Telemax I paid $0.53 for. Super basic, but I dig the results.

The prices for these cameras are getting crazy.. I used to buy Mju II for 5 to 50€, I had four that I carried with me everywhere and they all ended up breaking. The rubber light seals are weak, the film window gets light leaks and the ribbon cables break, so you're paying 300€ for what's basically a non serviceable disposable camera :(

Great alternatives - I gave away a MJU II when my channel hit 1000 subscribers. I like the ergonomics of the MJU I better than the MJU II and I don’t mind the slightly slower lens on the MJU I.

I have the zoom version of the Olympus. It is a good wet weather camera. However, my experience is these don't work well in hot desert conditions. Focus doesn't like to function, and one camera died at 104 f. As did a camcorder. My Rolleicord kept right on working.

I think you mean the original XA, with rangefinder focusing and all. XA1 is a budget model worth nowhere near 125. You recognise it easily by the shutter button. It has mechanical black shutter button sticking out of the top cover instead the electric red button found on all other models in the series (XA, XA2, XA3 and XA4)

T3 is just as good, two thirds of stop faster and waaay cooler looking. Also it has the quite useful scope/brilliant finder and a lens that reacts faster, because to doesn't have to extent and retracts for every shot.

My belief is, hype around compact film cameras will die in few years. As the analog resurgence continues, more people will graviate towards serious cameras, leaving the fun for phone cameras. I have 5 compact cameras, but I never shoot them. Only for collection. I shoot only SLR.
@NicosPhotographyShow4 жыл бұрын
I actually have the opposite experience. Having a ton of serious gear from 35mm Leica stuff to ULF 11x14 cameras I love the free will of taking a P&S out. I have bought more compact cameras in 2019 than ever before.

Contrary to your opinion, compacts will continue to increase in price as with all other analog cameras. My opinion is based on the last 5 years of camera sales.

If you reed the forums (like people did 10 yeas ago) or know a Olympus fan, they will tell you, the MJU II that is Assembled in Hong Kong or Japan is much more quality built then the ones that say Assembled or Made in China, it´s written on the bottom of the camera. They are qualitywise two worlds appart, not worth the money.
