I have a Kiev 6S with the TTL meter, it's a really good (heavier than a hod of bricks) and reliable guy. Albeit my copy's frame counter needs to be repaired, I'm still searching for a good tutorial as the shipping alone to a tech will eat a solid chunk of change. I also have the Praktisix, which is the predecessor to the pentacon. So I have two great examples of the budget 6x6 SLRs. then I have several TLRs and a few rangefinders, including a Moskiva 2 and the Kodak Medalist II. I did some, SOME, math and at the end, I spent roughly the same amount for all nine of my bodies and lenses that I would on a 6x7 Kit. Probably could have gotten a Mamiya RB or RZ kit. But I am happy with the ones I've gotten.

Hi Nico! I would like to see a video from you both talking about the Bronicas 645 and GS1. I own both and love them. By the way, could you confirm this please? In the old brochures of the GS1 they showed a film back wide for the 35mm film, but I have been looking for it and never found one, it appears they had the intention to do it but it never got built.Did they ever built one? Thanks and I enjoy very much your videos. Keep up with the good work.

Talking about 6x6: Instead of going for a Rolleiflex You could opt for a Mamiya C220/C330. It's more versatile because of the interchangeable lenses, closer focus and cheaper price. And the image quality is still very nice. For 6x7 i'm all for the Pentax 67 and the Mamiya RB67. Only problem I had with the Pentax is the position of the MLU lever...I have taken it out of the bag several times and flipped the mirror up unintentionally. That's why I taped it. But You should go for the MLU version as it has a slightly better build quality. And You can pass on the wooden grip...It just makes You look like you're into the real business without giving you any real advantage besides better carrying.

I love my Mamiya C220 a very underrated camera. I wouldn’t want to buy anything better really. I would love a H1 or an RB or RZ in the future but I can live with just my C220. I have tried an RZ and I’ve found it not that bad to hold. Possibly because I’m used to holding bulky cameras. I would get a C220 over the 330 as it’s a hell of a lot lighter.

I have both a Hasselblad and an RB67, and was watching "youtube videos" and reviews, and purchased a Pentax 67 with the 105 f2.4 lens due to the rave reviews. Also ordered one of those 3d printed grips for the right side and fastend it on. Shot 2-3 rolls of film. Main irritant was that my knuckle on my right hand finger kept hitting the MLU button without me knowing it. Lost a few shots. While the quality is there, I ended up selling it off and basically got what I paid for it. At the end of the day, I will stick with the Hassy and RB. Just my $.02

The biggest concern about the the "tip" to use a TLR is Prism vs. Waist level finder and 6x6 vs 6x7. I would never use it instead. One does not compare to the other in sense of operation or results (think aspect ratio)
@toulcaz31

Although some points are correct about the camera, it seems to me the angle of that video should have been different than "all the reasons coming to my mind (valid or not) telling you why you should check other cameras in my inventory". As implied in the second half, a good question could have been "Is the Pentax 67 the best choice as a first MF camera?". The weight, the so-so metered prism, the non changeable back would lead me personally not to advise it to a first mover unless he understands how to mitigate those limitations. This being said, I would never sell my Pentax 6x7 MLU because of the look images get and the special feel that camera has. To come back on some other points in that video that sounds too exaggerated IMHO: - How many leaf shutter lenses do you need to shoot in Studio? You mainly need them to shoot people. For products, you don't need higher sync speed most of the time. Ask Bruce Weber :) - The 105mm lens is not just a hype lens. It's a lens with a look. The fair comment about the lens would be to say that it gets softer in the edges (often mistaken as its shallow DOF) and is not a sharp and clinical as Mamiya 67 lenses. - The point on the vertical positioning of the camera on tripod is quite funny given it's an SLR body. I don't recollect this being mention for all SLR 35mm cameras that were reviewed. - The reference to autofocus cameras has to evolve a bit IMHO. The fact a camera has autofocus is not a pro on its own. There is nothing worse than slow, erratic autofocus cameras from my experience. As such it eliminates many AF cameras as alternatives. - Scaring people about light seals sound a bit ridiculous again. One can get a light seals kit for $12 if not less. I rest my case. :)

Biggest issue from all these selections is to make sure you buy a good serviced model. Most of the cameras here like the 6X7 and RB were used extensively by pros and many had an extremely hard life, so walk away from anything that looks well worn. I'm a little worried by thirty year old electronics, so personally I'd be avoiding any of the A/F medium format systems. I note that Rollei SL66 and SLX didn't get a mention..? Probably just as well as reliability isn't great. For me, if I were starting over with medium format again I would go for a TLR like the Yashica D or even a Rolleicord Vb. Both tend to sell well but they are simple and give superb results.

The Pentax isn't pricy at all, once you've had to pay for Keiv or Pentacon repairs, assuming that's even possible. Let's remember that the Keiv never had a US distributor because they are unreliable from new. There was once a single importer of Russian equipment into the US. They found it necessary to take every body and lens they received into their shop, strip and rebuilt each one, before offering it for sale. And they re long gone.

The Studio Part is absolutely bogus.... in the studio you controll all the light, so basically flash sync does not matter at all. Leaf shutters are only required if you need a fill flash, so this is more the thing of an outside setting with flash. Yeah, I was scratching my head on that one too. However, I think it was also slipped that this camera's shutter can only flash sync at 1/30. Maybe the real concern is that at such a low shutter speed, ambient light would start to become a problem?

@@derekkonigsberg2047 in studio with good flashes you only have the modeling light and the flash. The modeling light goes off or is at least 5 lv less than the flash, so no issue, even handheld with people. Outside is a different story

Correct! The slow (1/30th) synch shutter speed for flash is only an issue where you are trying to balance flash and daylight in one shot. In the studio, I would think that the lack of quick interchangeable backs for the 67 would be a larger negative factor.

If you use and like SLRs, when you want big size film, you´ll probably feel comfortable with the pentax67 or pentacon six, because it´s the same thing with bigger size (Reflex, interchangeable lenses and similar structure and functioning). The RB67 / bronica gs and their 645 little sisters work the same way and some of them have advantages ( leaf shutters, rotating backs, etc.) but... even with a grip the workflow is not the same. I´ve been using a bronica etrsi with pentaprism and grip for some years and I like it a lot, but I find myself using more the pentacon six than the etrsi. I´m sorry but I dont see the tlr or fuji rangefinder valid alternatives to a pentax67 because they are too different concepts

The current hype of the 105mm is amazing. Because so many of them were made since 1968, used they were one of the cheapest lenses available for the camera, maybe $125 - 150 in average condition. I do not think there any really poor lenses for the Pentax 67, but some are better than others, and the 105mm is one of the "others" in that grouping: decent but nothing special. Having used the Pentax 67 for more than 35h years, I've acquired pretty much all of the lenses most people would consider buying, plus several more most folks are unlikely to buy. I've never owned a 105mm, and I have no plan to get one. If money is an object, go for a late version of the 90mm 2.8 (not the LS model). If money is not an object, try the 100mm 4.0 (macro with its accessory close-up lens - one of the "uber-lenses" for the Pentax).

The current prices of the 105mm lens are ridiculous, being hyped up in social media with no technical justification at all. The 105mm sold used in the US for around $250 or less for decades. It's one of the few lenses to survive as was from 1969 with no improvements. It is fairly good lens as Pentax 67 goes, but is at the bottom of the barrel for optical performance among those lenses which might be considered "normal" focal length. It was created for advertising as much as anything, at a time when fast lenses sold bodies, and Pentax continuously advertised that their 105mm was the fastest in medium format. At the time, it was also their "only". The late model 90mm is "better" by all of the usual comparisons. The very late model 100mm 4.0, even more so. I have 12 Pentax 67 lenses from 35mm to 400mm - the 105mm was not one of them, even when they were cheap.
@randallstewart175
@randallstewart175 4 жыл бұрын
Got to agree that the 90mm 2.8 (late model) is a far better choice than the 105mm as a "normal" lens. As far as I call tell, all of the hype over the 105mm is being driven in the KZfaq community and related internet, usually put forth by new users who know next to nothing about the Pentax lens system. From a purely technical view, the 105mm lens is the least capable of the several standard lenses for the Pentax 67. It's fast, but the speed is rarely needed, and the optical performance near wide open is about as bad as you can get in the Pentax 67 system. It should have joined several other first generation Pentax lenses in the dust bin of history (like the 55mm 3.5; 150mm 2.8) but survived because people wet their panties over the 2.4 aperture.

@@gibcoprobe66 A lot of social media commentators talk about the special "rendering" of the 105mm. Several hundred comments later, I'm still waiting for someone to define in some objective terms what that means. It's sort of like "bokah". Lots of folks use the term, but few seem to understand what it means. Most mean "depth of field", which it is not. The closest I've come to a definition of bokah is the image shape of out of focus ports of the image, some being quite ragged and harsh, some being smooth with almost no character at all. So, what is special rendering? IMO 90% of the gushing over the 105mm is by those who now realize they paid $600-900 for lens that 10 years ago was easily had for $150, so they need to discover something unique about the lens to justify their purchase, apart from being had by sucker bait.

I've shot the Pentax 67 for more than 30 years.. I own almost every lens you would want. As a totally invested user, I would never recommend the Pentax 67 as a in-studio camera. Historically, there were two leaf shutter lenses for flash syncro, but the reality is that the 90mm 2.8 LS was a so-so optical lens and there are no parts to repair the leaf shutter. That leaves the 165mm 4.0 LS, which is still clumsy to use with flash, and that is the only reason to own the lens, as the 165mm 2.8 is both cheaper and optically better.
@randallstewart175

@@robin9339 exactly! I find it far easier to nail focus than with my Mamiya RZ.

Juho: "This is a Rolleiflex... something something something." I laughed, not because he didn't know what model he was holding, but because my own personal experience would say that most Rollei TLR's have similar output. I use a Rolleicord Vb II because it's inexpensive, easy to maintain, and the Schneider Kreuznach lens is every bit as good as the Zeiss lenses on later cameras. Spending 5x more on a f/2.8 model never seemed worthwhile, in my opinion.

Let's be honest guys, Pentax 67 and Mamiya RZ67 are getting so scarce and the price so crazy that you're trying to push lesser cameras and lenses.

They are limited (as no new ones are being made) and content as youtube, blogs or instagram are making more people aware of their benefits. So slowly they will just keep going up. Also every day to a certain degree a few bodies or lenses are lost to failures, mold, haze, etc...

@@NicosPhotographyShowThen, It's kind of odd then that companies keep on selling film but do not invest in producing new film cameras. It's not as a niche market as it once was and when you see the numerous iterations that Fuji come out for example, I can't imagine it would be that more expensive to come up with a new MF film camera or at least production of an existing one.
