A few observations about this review: 1. Several reviewers have commented that the Sony menu system is goofy...stuff seems to be splattered into inappropriate categories. 2. At high ISO, the Sony cameras (Nex-5N, Nex-7, A77, etc.) suffer from "chroma clumping". Chroma noise doesn't stay small and random like the E-M5, but clumps together into much more noticeable color blotches. 3. The filter on the E-M5's lens exaggerates the length of the lens. Show BOTH cameras with filters, or none.

Yes it's true that APS-C offers shallower DoF, but currently Sony doesn't offer many large aperture lenses (unless you use MF or alpha adapter). For M43 there are many lenses available with large apertures that actually produce reasonably shallow DoF (e.g. 25mm 1.4, 45mm 1.8, 75mm 1.8).

As Roger Cicala notes at the LensRentals blog (having done optical tests on the lenses of both systems: "The new Sigma lenses stand out as superb compared to other NEX lenses, but are just another good prime lens on the m/4/3 system."

Thanks for watching. NEX 5N has an overheating problem when shooting video, so I would recommend a57 for video.

Great video! For me, personally I love Olympus cameras and if I had the money, there'd be no choice at all but to snap up an OM-D. It looks far sexier than the Sony you compared it to! Thanks again. :-)

sony may have limited lens line up but with the right adapter you can use any make of lens with manual focus and with the awesome focus peaking its so easy

Hi, I have read somewhere, that cameras with video recording feature have to be limited by the manufacturer to max 29:59 minutes. Otherwise they belong to camcorders and will be subject to considerable higher taxes.

thank you so much for the info ... i always thought micro 4/3 was smaller than the 4/3 system .... and i really love the OM series. i just wish OM-D came with a bigger sensor ... even sony uses APSC and this is the Olympus om...THEE OLYMPUS OM!!!

The price difference was mentioned as a factor and is why the OM-D is not completely superior to 5N. See my video of OM-D vs. NEX-7 for a same price comparison.

Yes sometimes even 5min will overheat. I find that if OSS is turned off, it takes much longer to overheat.

Yup, the opt. grip is expensive but so are the weather sealed grips from canikon, but oly grip comes in 2 parts, each w/ its own dial/buttons. Anyway, I prefer the NEX-7 over the 5n for the controls and hotshoe (flash is important to me) but prefer the em5 over it for the ibis, weather sealing and lenses; it's also cheaper. Then again, cant deny that the 5n is a good value.

Even filming at 24p 720p can overheat. It is really camera and environment dependent. Even using 45MB/s card and screen lifted off would not help. Turning off OSS does help.

Sigma and Quantaray make lenses for many types of mounts, just find out the mount type (from the lens, box, etc), then add "to nex" and search ebay. Good luck.

i bought EPL5 instead of OMD due to the strap hinge was placed on the wrong area. over time it will scratch the bezel. im waiting for the next OMD and hopefully they will correct this issue

I am not affiliated with any company. All the points are mentioned in video as what you get for $600 more. Image quality is very similar (from my own tests and review sites). Refresh rate in Oly EVF is 60Hz normal and 120Hz fast (reduced resolution). Also, Oly is not waterproof, but splashproof as mentioned. That said, OM-D is the better overall camera, but is it worth $600 more is the question.

5N sensor has slightly better in IQ but not by much. In fact, because M43 has better lenses the IQ usually turns out better for OM-D.

Yes they can be.

Micro 4/3 sensor is exactly the same size as the original 4/3 sensor, 2.25 sq cm (2X crop). This is only slightly smaller than an APS-C sensor which is 3.28 sq cm (1.6 crop Canon, not sure of exact size for Sony 1.5 crop). For reference, a "full frame" 135 sensor (1X crop) is 8.64 sq cm.

I've used both cameras for awhile and I have to say I enjoy shooting with the omd much more then the nex. There's pretty much nothing that the nex can do that the omd can't. Lens selection is also much better on the omd. If your a pro then u won't use any of these two cameras, so this is more for the enthusiasts then pros.

Kind of weird comparo but whatever. Should have said that the em5 kit w/ 14-42 is available for $1100, about the same price as an 5n + evf and the lenses are similar in range. Also, the em5's screen is OLED and looks better side by side. As for the hinge design, it was done that way (tilt down 1st) to move the screen away from the evf so the eyecup doesn't cover the screen. You should compare cameras at similar price points like gx1 and nex-5n. That's more relevant to would be buyers like me. OM-D is at a different tier

5N doesn't have dials - which means it will not be as fast to work with as E-M5. I have Olympus E-M5 and E-PL1 and just from interface point of view, dials are much much more convenient. Of course there are other things: built in EVF, weather sealing, AF speed, in camera image stabilization etc. which justify the higher price of E-M5 over Nex 5N.

nice video but we cant forget the fact that these are cameras... no matter how good they look or built or weather sealed, its about the photos they take .... at first i thought the 4/3 was a smaller sensor and i dont understand why they put a MICRO 4/3 an even smaller sensor on a camera like the OM.... lets compare the om-d with a camera that cost about the same and has an EVF and control dials (sony nex-7) ... lets compare the photos they shot...

I don't like your method of auto focus test. You should change object at different distant.

Take it easy he didn't insult your mom, he said both were well built, metal bodied cameras, with the Sony having slightly tighter seams. If you don't like his review when you have both cameras to compare them yourself, make your own video. Good job on the comparison review.

NEX-5N wins all the fucking way. Best mirrorless camera around, and imo even better than the NEX-7, due to their 'support' of manual lenses, touchscreen, etc. It's just the best decision you can do atm.

EM-5 is a good camera but it's way overpriced. Same with the NEX-7. 5N is the best bang for the buck. If they were all the same price, I would go with the EM-5 anyday.

Ok I had to stop watching when he said he would give the build quality to the Sony. Are you serious? That thing is built like a childs toy. Not dust or weather sealed. This is the problem with youtube, some tool has the money to buy a couple camera's and suddenly he is an expert doing reviews. $300 over priced? ahhh hahahahaha so over priced you can't get one anywhere.

this is a third class video only provided by sony men otherwise sony is zero in build quality even sony is not waterproof but he never mentioned the pic quality is thousand time better in olympus, grip is perfect in olympus EVF not mentioned in olympus oly has oled not mentioned AF speed is superb in oly, refresh rate oly is 240 in sony it is 120 if u want best thing u have to pay more

No offense, but your review was garbage... You compared cameras from two different price points, and you were talking about form more than function.
