I decided to test out and share how the OM SYSTEM, OM-1 performs in low light and not so ideal situations. See this episode and find out how it did!

Hi Dennis. You don't need to worry about rain, even heavy rain, pouring on your OM-1 + 150-400. The weather sealing of that kit is best in class.

I second that comment. I’ve had that same system in a pounding rain storm with no issues dials sticking or lens nor camera not functioning the next day. Looks like you’re in joying your system.

I have a friend who traded in his E-M1 mkII kit for Sony FF - he admitted the Sony build quality is inferior in every respect and doesn't expect it to last as long as the Olympus in the outdoors rain and dust and sand.

Thanks Dennis. It's interesting watching you go through the learning curve on the OM-1 and I agree with your observations. I feel OM Systems are in need of a firmware 2.0 for the OM-1 to address the AF shortcomings. It would make a very good camera a great one if the AF were in the 90% accuracy ball park. I estimate it's currently in the 80% area. Also using a good noise reduction utility is essential in my opinion. I use DXO Photolab and I'm happy with the results.

Thank you for posting the video. Interesting that you use Capture One. It’s been the software I have used since it was bundled with the OMD EM1 Mk3 and I think it’s fantastic and that the noise reduction tool within it does a pretty good job too. I haven’t tried this myself but there are reports that when shooting at higher iso you can mitigate noise a bit by using the battery grip and just using one battery which you place in the grip. The idea being heat generate noise and if there is no battery in the camera body it will run cooler.

Ah, so despite all the "its small sensor sucks for low-light" chatter I've been hearing, it seems to actually deliver what I expected it to deliver - the same or better low-light performance than my "pro" 7D Mark II old tank, much lower system size and weight and a "bazillion" new features like LiveND, super resolution and focus stacking. Seems like an amazing piece of technology! One that will end up with me much more often than my current bulky combo, which I tend to leave in the car or at home if I'm not on a walk/hike specifically for doing photography. I wonder if that would be the case when using some of their more reasonably priced lenses as I don't have an infinite budget to spend on a hobby that's not making me any money.

A couple of generations of newer technology helps. Having a smaller sensor, AND smaller lens mount means smaller lenses designed for the smaller sensor. A huge win of the 7D etc and Nikon D500 with mounts designed for lenses larger than the sensor needs.

for still birds you con go without problems at 12800 iso... Also, for still or semi still subjects, like animals in the forest OM1 + 150-400 has an immeasurable advantage on any sony + 200-600... Because of the faster lens and the better stabilization... In conclusion, in you want better results with sony ff system you must necessarily use 400 2,8 and 600 f4, anyway the weight in addition and the weak stabilization could get you not better results... In my opinion, today the FF system is recommended only if you need higher Autofocus performance, expecially in dynamic low light condition.

I have also discovered the feature of the om1 built-in digital tel-converter with the 150-400 tc also engaged for extra reach and was pleasantly surprised. Might come in handy one day. I think you get 2000mm of reach. I have set it to a c mode of the camera for quick access.

@@DennisJacobsenWildlife The beauty of using the DTC (Digital Teleconverter) is that it crops to the center, which is the sharpest part of the lens -- and you do not lose any speed. I use it quite often with my E-M1X and 100-400mm, and have it programmed to my video button. Andy Rouse has a good KZfaq video about this.
@oneeyedphotographer

@@gregm6894 Isn't it just a crop, like you can do in post? Might be useful in JPEG, but I don't see it otherwise.
@gregm6894
@gregm6894 11 ай бұрын
@@oneeyedphotographer There are three benefits I see, because I am almost exclusively a Jpeg shooter: First, is the fact that part of my shooting enjoyment comes from composing an image in my viewfinder, and capturing that composition in camera. The cropping done with the DTC allows that, rather than capturing more than I want in the composition and then cropping later. Secondly, I often have clients/organizations that want immediate access to Jpeg files -- they don't even care about RAW files -- using the DTC allows me to crop the image as I'm shooting and provide finished files with the best composition. Thirdly, as I pointed out in my original post, if you compose a scene with a wider angle of view, and assuming you don't simply place your main subject in the dead center of the composition, and then crop later to match the DTC composition, you have just cropped away from the sharpest area of your lens. The DTC causes your subject to be moved closer to the center of your lens -- the sharpest area. None of this may be of any obvious benefit to you, or others. However, I have exhibit prints on my walls that are printed from Jpeg files, captured with the DTC, that are razor sharp with excellent detail and great color. Why would I prefer to ignore this function and waste the time cropping after the fact?
@oneeyedphotographer
@oneeyedphotographer 11 ай бұрын
@@gregm6894 JPEG is exactly the exclsion I allowed for. For me, my photos cannot be made in camera. For raw files, I see no value to the DTC, but there could be something I don't yet understand.

How do you like the MFT bokeh compared to FF cameras. Does the AF struggle to lock on the subject first and last light shooting conditions. I think with todays denoise apps high iso is less of an issue.

I think @ 400mm on the 150-400mm f4.5 the bokeh looks great in most situations, not FF 600mm f/4 great but still im very pleased with the results in the MFT system :)

@@DennisJacobsenWildlife I was asking about ISO over 10,000 on OM-1 because I own a 1st gen 12-40 and would love for it to be used in indoor sports situation for my kid when the full frame camera has a 70-200 or longer lens mounted. I know that ISO 20,000 looks fine in APS-C on my cellphone. I do not look at photos on computer. Most of RAW are processed in camera then go directly to cellphone. I hope you would do an episode of ISO from 10,000 to 50,000 on OM-1.
