Small correction at 30:38: AF-ON on the lens button only starts the AF, not Pro Capture. The latter must be engaged by half pressing the shutter button. Sorry for the confusion!
What I mean is that I found this configuration (AF-ON on the lens button) very useful with Pro Capture when I was trying to photograph small birds in flight near a feeder. The action was so fast and brief that I had to time very precisely when to engage the autofocus. Being able to do that with my left thumb on the lens made it so that my right hand’s only job was to activate Pro Capture, and then press the shutter button fully once the moment was right.

Have you succed with setting up a dual back button focus with ordinary c-af on one back button and another af-setup on the other (for example bird Af in the subjekt det. mode)? IO haven´t. But it would be strange if it was impossible, On Sony, Canon and Nikon Z9 it can be done.

If we're talking birds in flight, or wildlife in general, I think it's worth it, especially for the better AF. The EVF is also a nice upgrade. Otherwise it depends what kind of photos you take with the E-M1 II. There isn't a big improvement in image quality for example, especially when it comes to raw files.

At last. Someone has published a realistic and comprehensive guide to setting up the OM-1. I have been waiting for and wanting this. From my use of the OM-1 and my 100-400 Olympus lens, my experience does mirror yours to a great degree. Obviously, I am going to re watch because there is a lot of valuable content. Appreciated.

@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons I have set C1 to diamond with 1/640 sec, 10fps, bird detection on. Full screen AF is useless for small birds in brush and also for distant birds in flat lighting. C2 is set the same except all screen and 1/2000 sec. C3 is set the same as C2 except for animals. What I have discovered is that bird detection works quite well for coyotes and deer. I don't have to change settings. C4 is single point, 1/250 sec single frame for precision. The grip works better in that I don't trigger as many bum shots as I did on my mk2. I just want my free spare battery. Sometimes the camera amazes me with in focus shots of ducks flying past me and I hardly had time to pick up and aim and the ducks are in focus. And I always shoot with the 100-400 at 400. Rolling shutter doesn't seem to be an issue. But don't let anyone kid you. It is not perfect and you have to learn it's foibles. I have lots of out of focus shots to prove that.

I had to wait a little while to get my free spare battery. Hopefully yours will arrive soon. It seems that bird / cats & dog detection can detect a wide range of animals, not just what the manual describes. Next time they improve the algorithm with a firmware update, they should put everything into one category.

That was a really good and down to earth video with lots of excellent advice. I have had the OM1 for 3 month and has finally set-up it up in a similar (but no identifcal ) way as you recommend. This camera really invites you to experiment with configuration and might take a little more time than others to adjust to (even as a longtime Olympus user), but it is worth the effort. Only thing I am not too certain about is the video configuration,expecially choice of AF points,but this a minor quibble. Your channel is highly recommended

Excellent summary. I have built a complex spread sheet which shows every setting and every button assignment possibility for each of the different shooting scenarios/missions I might undertake. (It is color coded to differentiate from default settings and to highlight certain critical actions. ... but what I like best about it is that I can see which configurations I've stored in the various C modes and which I don't have stored but which I must change if I want to shift photography projects.) I've used many of your suggestions for some of my configuration options --- but I also have some that I prefer instead of yours. Nevertheless, your effort to make the video is much appreciated. AF Menu, page 1: Disable "AF by Half-pressing the shutter button" for S-AF and C-AF (or just one of them according to your preferences, I disable it for both). Operations Menu, page 1: go to Button Settings, Button Function (photo-camera icon), scroll all the way down to L-Fn and choose AF-ON among the options available. You may also want to assign AF-ON to the AF-ON button at the rear, just in case you're using a lens without the button on the side.

You can, but the problem is that once you start the recording, the camera goes in P exposure mode. I really do hope that OMDS will eventually work on the continuous af tracking and make it works like the Canon, Nikon and Sony where once it tracks, it sticks and glue to the subject and won’t jump off. The Bird Af works great at initial recognizing the target but it jumps where other birds get too close. It still works great but this is not the case with the human face and eye detection. If you do sport, you can’t rely on its face and eye detection because it will jump to other targets too easily while other brands like Sony and Canon will usually just stick to the one you track. Just hope they will eventually make it works.

Hi Danny, unfortunately these comments are accurate. AF performance in video mode is not as good as stills. Even with a person walking towards you, the camera struggles to track focus accurately at all times. There is no real difference with the E-M1 III, except that eye AF also works for video, unlike on the mk3 model that has fade detection only.

1. Yes, as long as Bird Detection is on, the performance is better than the E-M1X. 2. For birds (or any of the options found the in subject detection mode), I don’t think you need it. Tracking could be useful for sports or action not covered by the Subject Detection mode, like football for example, but Tracking on its own hasn’t improved in comparison to previous cameras.

Hi Mathieu Thank you for this excellent video. I have used your customised settings for motorsports successfully. However, I did experience problems initially. The exposure compensation appeared to have a life of its own often often over exposing images by increasing compensation. I have never seen exposure compensation change like this. Have I missed something.?

It can change on a regular basis depending on the the light and contrast in your scene. It also depends what kind of metering setting you use. A smaller area like Spot can react more to any change because the area measured is small (for example if one rider wears a white suit, but the next wears black, Spot metering can measure a completely different exposure).

For example, I assigned the Lens-FN button, in C3 (slow, not moving much mode) mode to C2 (Procapture), this saves well (@ least it displays "C2 on/off" - but does this only work within C2?) under C3. However, when I am in C3 mode, pressing the Lens-FN button does nothing visible, and not the expected call of C2. Is what I am trying not possible? Or am I implementing it wrongly? Any solutions / alternative suggestions to achieve my goal?

Hmm, if I understand correctly what you are asking, I don't think it's possible, or at least I couldn't find a way to do it on mine. You can assign C1-C4 to the lens Fn button, but you can only recall it when the main dial is on one of the P-A-S-M positions. If the dial is on C1, C2, C3, or C4, nothing will happen when you press the lens button. probably the best alternative is to assign the custom modes to different buttons, like C1 on the lens for example, and C2 somewhere on the button.

Hi now that the R7 is out I am torn. Would you compare this camera with the R7. I am considering the Olympus of course for their great IBIS and light weight lenses. But R7 is very appealing even though RF lenses are a lot bigger and more expensive.

Yes I’m considering comparing the OM-1 and R7. The Canon is an interesting addition for wildlife/birds.

I am torn between both as well ! The one side that is good for the R7 is the focus tracking, yet, the weight is quite more with a 100/500 lens! If you find a comparison vlog, please let me know! Thank you!

Hi Matthieu, I recently purchased the OM-1 along with the OM 100-400 quickly followed by the 300 f4 PRO and x1.4tc. Came across this video and downloaded the guide. Would you change anything for firmware 1.5 that came out I think around July, 2024. Thanks.

Matthieu, I am sorry, I have lost the white frames. Pls can you tell me what to press to get them back? I am in bird subject detect. Thank you.

Hmm, that's weird, so Bird Subject Detection is on, but you don't see white frames around the bird? Note sure what could be the cause of that, it never happened on my camera.

Having trouble when I assign function button to bird detection, then shut off with button it wouldn’t let me have face detection on. Also when you say large focus area, is that same as “all”?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 2 жыл бұрын
Is Face & Eye Detection on? 1. Disable Subject Detection (Bird) 2. Turn Face & Eye Detect on 3. Use the function button to activate and deactivate Subject Detection. Face & Eye should activate/deactivate automatically. Large focus area = Large Target

How do you feel about the OM1 after a few weeks of use? Are you enjoying it more and more or less and less?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 2 жыл бұрын
I'm enjoying it in the same way I enjoyed the E-M1 II and E-M1 III before. It's a natural continuation from the previous models, with many improvements that make it more competitive. The ergonomics remain one of my favourite, all cameras combined. The OM-1 + 300mm Pro is a terrific combo, I can see myself using them more and more.

I'm assuming you use the joy stick to move the target area around the screen. How do you move this target area on the OM5 which does not have a joystick.

You can use the 4-way arrow pad on the rear, or the touch screen.

Is this camera the most complex ever to set up?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Жыл бұрын
Certainly one of the most complex to setup, especially if you compare it to Sony cameras. Canon also has a lot of AF settings that are not easy to understand at first, but even with the default values, models such as the R6 and R5 give good results already.
