I've had many guitars come and go and the thing that usually sends most of them away? They just aren't comfortable to play. Until recently, I shopped with other things in mind and completely ignored how the guitar felt across my lap and how it felt to fingerpick. When I finally thought about comfort, I found my perfect match. This video digs into one of the biggest things to consider if you're in the market for a new guitar. Hope it helps!

Great video. When I was really studying jazz guitar and practicing 3-6 hours a day, a local shop let me take home 3 guitars that I liked. One was a Larrivee dreadnought, 1 was a Martin dreadnought with cutaway, and one was a Matin OM 21. I chose the OM 21 and have no regrets. That was in 1991. Still have that OM and love it. It does everything right for me.

I always thought 1 3/4” was my minimum for nut spacing and 1 7/8” better. Then I picked up a Santa Cruz D prewar and found out 1 11/16” with a 2 3/16” bridge spacing and a fuller neck carve is actually great for me and frankly excellent for fingerpicking. Moral of the story for me is “keep an open mind, play many guitars, and play the guitar that brings the biggest smiles”

I love Dreadnoughts, but I am just not as familiar with the OM. The OM sounds very good, and I want one .

Your explanation of the difference in comfort and playability between dreadnaughts and OMs for fingerstyle guitar really nails it. I also believe the OM tone is more suitable, but maybe that's just me.

comfort is key. I started with a dreadnought but sold it and bought a couple of smaller bodied guitars which I much prefer.

A very good lesson .... Sound wise : I like both .. Very different but very nice too. I know too well how badly a shoulder can hurt - so nowadays after more than 50 years I only use my big bodied guitars sparsely, one or two songs in a whole performance... I prefer a narrow nut and a close string space... But I'm seldom fingerpicking anything... .. - I consider buying a Dreadnought with walnut back and sides... Because it has more low end than my other acoustics I use - 1 OM and 2 00 guitars, and it is a little smaller than both my Old Guild jumbo and a new Epi Ej jumbo... The Epiphone jumbo is a very large guitar! Remember Brownie McGee .... I loved his playing - he certainly had strong hands to be able what he did - and he use his Dreadnought all his life ... I am very glad I could see him and Sonny Terry on stage many years ago... Oh I miss those days ... Here in Denmark we could go to a concert every month during the summer time and early autumn and see our heroes live, at small stages ... A privilegie long gone.. Something they had in common: They all played Guild dreadnoughts - more or less..

I long ago decided dreads are ugly and boxy looking and I embraced the nice roundedness of OM, 000, jumbo, etc. Lately I have aquired a couple dreads on the cheap and I have to admit that I just love the lush husky tones!

I saw Brownie McGhee opening for Muddy Waters, and he was playing his trusty old Martin D-18, one of the best finger-style blues guitarists ever - on a drednought.

Absolutely agree that it is a personal decision. But, for me, a nice 00 makes the ideal fingerstyle blues guitar.

I have a cheap Fender mahogany dreadnaught which sounds fine for slide, although my Gretsch resonator is more comfortable for the same reasons you mentioned. I am looking to upgrade my acoustic as the dreadnaught can become uncomfortable after playing a while.

I love boutique guitars... Woods, fit, finish and sound.. Within a context.... But to me.. and my ears.... There is NOTHING... that compares to old acoustic guitar blues, than the cheapest twangy-ist ricketty, ratched, warped guitar you can find... Why..? Because its the authentic sound and vibe... There is a substantial place for the finer-kind... But the johnson, house and that genre... Use what it is you have, can piece together or make.... and play the blues! Like they did!!!

Yes! I've got an old parlor from the 30s that's all birch and people rag on the sound. But when I play it, it sounds like the blues. Completely understand what you mean.

Between your two guitars, I hear livelier, sweeter tones from the dread, making it my favored guitar. That could be attributed to the different back/side woods. However, I hear the same difference between my dread and my OM, which are both Martins and both have EIR back/sides. Nonetheless, I prefer to play my OM because it is more comfortable due to its lesser depth. I've been hoping to find one guitar that would replace the two that I own. I tried a used Alvarez Delta00. I loved it but I returned it because it needed a tuneup and that would bring the total cost up to what a new one would cost. As great as it was for fingerstyle blues, I didn't think it would be good enough to replace the two that I already have. If I go hunting again, I will start with a 00 or a 000 made with mahogany back/sides. It will be a great challenge to find one guitar that will make me want to sell the two that I have.

@@jimwing.2178 mine is Rosewood, great tone, fatter than OM but not as bassy as a full dread. I prefer rosewood. You should try one out. I bought mine online, took a chance and i don’t regret. I owned a ton of martins Om 28 Marquis and 70’s D-28. This is in that category but cheaper. Cheers!

I had a dreadnaught, but I'm short and it wasn't that fulfilling for me to play. I changed to an Ibanez Masa version and while it's smaller, it's way more comparable - and I play it way more often and enjoy it. My best friend ribbed me about this for awhile, but when he noticed that I him call to jam more often, he stopped. I have issues with my right ear as well, and the Masa doesn't bother it. In the end, music is music and the notes are the same. People could say the same thing about parlor guitars - and they're smaller than nine!

Maybe it's just my ears but the Dread had more presence. String spacing isn't that big a deal for me - I'm always messing around with finger style on all of my guitars (electric and acoustic). Reso's are still the most fun though.

Couldn’t decide between a dread or a 000. I primarily play blues but I also like bluegrass and country. Ended up with my hd28 I figured it could do all of it just fine where a 000 might struggle a bit with the big open chords.
