I love your content and thank you for the disclaimer about nuances that will be different for every wave. When I first learned to catch green waves it took me 6 months to realize that nose to the beach was a point of failure (for the wave size, type, and equipment I was surfing). For 1' to 5' fast beach breaks on a 7' board you have .02 seconds and no time for a bottom turn. With angling the take-off from the start I also had more time to pop up as the wave was breaking and setting the rail. Once this clicked I stopped lawn darting every takeoff, I wish this was taken into account more often instead of telling everyone just go straight. This is the first time I've ever heard someone addressing this. Always great content and thank you!

What is the cue to know when to bottom turn without getting to the flats? Just speed feel? I am always a little worried about getting to far on the flat and I feel i am doing too shallow of a bottom turn.

I feel this depends on the size of the wave, and the amount of draw off the bottom. A larger wave you can draw off the flats to come more vertical and for a small wave you have to stay tighter to draw off the bottom to get up quickly to the lip.

Do it with less effort lets say 70% so you can feel it. You either going to loose speed or tap into wave energy. Use the other 30% to adjust.
