I'm 42, and I can see that "mainstream" formats such as radio and TV have changed focus a lot since the old days. But in 2020, you can find music in SO MANY more places. There are still many talented young artists singing beautiful songs. You just have to know where to look in this day and age. Turn your gaze from the focus of mass media and zoom out...way out. There are thousands and thousands of artists online now that the age of physical album sales is breathing it's last breath.

India, I just love your reactions. I have a story about Lionel that you might like. About 18 - 20 years ago my wife and I bought tickets to his concert. it was outdoors in an arena that was sold out. All 15,000 people waited and waited as the time for the start of the concert came and went. Over two hours passed and still nothing. One of many amazing facts about that night is that less than 500 people gave up and left. Lionel's management would come out every 30-45 min with explanations and updates. As it turned out; his plane had to fly around a storm to get to us, Finally a Greyhound bus pulled up and musicians poured out. The last one out was Lionel, smiling and happy to be safe on the ground. Lionel walked up to the mic and he was visibly moved. He said that it made him so sad that he was so late. He was very up-front with the audience that he had less than 30 min to play, then he had to run back and catch another plane. He begged all of us to keep our ticket stubs and no mater what he would come back as soon as it could be arranged. He then proceeded to give the best 25 min concert I've ever been to. His voice is totally on point, and he is a wonderful entertainer. The crowd was crazy the whole time. It was short but magical. He reminded everyone to keep the stubs. Then he was gone. About 6 weeks later it was announced that Lionel was on his way back, and had booked the brand new Basketball Arena in town. The announcement came with instructions... You could either just use your ticket stub for admission to the bigger, better show, or if you took your stub to the arena days before the show you could get a pass to bring a friend (date, mom, friend)! The next concert, Lionel flew in the day before so that there could be no issues this time. The "real" concert was an incredible 2.5 hours long! Mr. Richie is a class act and a great human being. What an incredible show and an incredible performer.

What a wonderful story, I just love to hear about artist that love there fans enough to not only want to see them but give them their money’s worth for their ticket! I remember the first time I saw Luther Vandross live in the mid 80’s he came out and rocked three big hits back to back, and told the fans “ I’m not gonna mess with your ticket money!” And Adele loves her fans too , she had 3 sold out shows in Phoenix in the middle of her 25 Tour in 2016 and couldn’t play one of those nights from sickness, she came back and did the show on the last night of her tour months later!

Had a mad crush on a college friend back in the day. We were at the dance club in 1986 and I had them play this song and asked her to dance. Sang this song along in her ear and kissed her at the end. We spent the next 7 years together until it heartbreakingly ended. Still think she was the one I was looking for. Never found one like her since.

This song was absolutely massive in 1984-loved it as a kid, even though the video even as a seven/eight year old was mega cheesy/camp. It has been made so much fun of over the years & even the song has been maligned unfairly, as without the video it is a good piece of music.

Over 20 years ago Lionel came to London on tour and a couple guy friends suggested we go as a group to see him. We girls said yes as a kind of joke as we though he was really cheesey, but his intro on to stage was 'Hello' and it started with an extended score. We all got the chills as the lights went down and the music built up with his silhouette appearing. AMAZING SHOW and that will teach us to be so judgemental!!!

I have always liked Lionel Richie. What really reinforced my respect for him was when he helped Shania Twain come back to singing after her bitter breakup. He just kept nudging, not pushing her to try. They finally worked to record My Love, in a bedroom of his bungalow in the Bahamas. He showed her that she still had a gift that she could and needed to share. He is a class act.

@@esthermclauchlan3146 Well, there must have been something wrong with me, my sisters, our girlfriends, and our cousins because we never thought it was creepy. 😆 Far from it! We were enthralled at the idea of someone wanting you that badly and wanting to know by asking US "how to win" our hearts. Now, I thought "Every Breath you Take" was beautiful but creepy as well as "Don't stand so Close to Me" also by the Police, especially when you see the video that goes along with it. Also, he didn't make a move on his COLLEGE student until AFTER she let him know she was equally interested in him. I guess it is all in how you perceive things.
@esthermclauchlan3146
@esthermclauchlan3146 3 жыл бұрын
@@le2800 I find it weird that you found "ever breath you take" romantic because even the writer said it was supposed to be creepy. As for a college teacher having a relationship with a student - no matter who initiated it - it has always been considered wrong. At most colleges it's grounds for dismissal... They advise staff that if they become interested in a student they don't act on it until after the student has graduated and if possible to remove themselves from having anything to do with teaching that student.... So maybe it's the way you were brought up but yes stalking has always been creepy and wrong - in fact one of my uncles who is now in his 80s once told me when HE was a teenager if they found a man doing that - he would be confronted and told to stop along the lines of "Either man up and ask her out or just back off" And if a man didn't do it or accept a "no" from the woman involved he would be considered weird and dangerous.... So yes I think your community is weird for thinking that behaviour is "romantic"
@le2800
@le2800 3 жыл бұрын
@@esthermclauchlan3146 Obviously you misread. I said that the Police song even though it is beautiful with the way it was sung and the music, HOWEVER, I DID think that song was "creepy" as well as "Don't Stand So Close To Me". You seem to be somewhat uptight and maybe there is some history behind that. I have had men run out of stores and chase me to a bus stop just to get my number or give me theirs before boarding the bus, or ask me if they could come join me at my table to eat with me, or can they jog with me, and I have been in bookstores where guys have offered to buy my book. Not any of those overtures were creepy to me. All seemed romantic and put a smile on my face, no matter how my day may have begun. From the video you don't know if she is a grad student or not, grad students and professors are NOT held to such a strict standard as undergrad students. Or at least not back in the 80s when " I" went to college. The character he plays in the song is NOT following her home, is NOT breathing heavy to her over the phone, is NOT saying he wants to force her to love him or anything stalkerish or scary. He is discreetly watching her, since she is blind she is not getting creeped out by it. He never ONCE approaches her. For all we know, she could have been in his summer stock class for acting and be finished. Regardless, she was intuitive of him and sculpted a bust of him from how she FELT he would look by his voice. He didn't grab her and pull her into his arms and kiss her at the end. He never once crossed the lines of being her professor no matter HOW much he was into her! THAT is what makes it so romantic. The wanting but the strength of will to NOT act on it. If you want to take umbrage at a song for inappropriateness, but you don't realize exactly what it was about until many years later ( or at least I hadn't) that is the song by Benny Mardones, "Into The Night". Now THAT is creepy!
@esthermclauchlan3146
@esthermclauchlan3146 3 жыл бұрын
@@le2800 The point is you DON'T know if she's a grad student or a summer student, she looks significantly younger than him and is OBVIOUSLY still his student. Also to be able to sculpt his face with that level of detail she would have had to have touched his face often and in detail - not really something (and I have work with disability services) most blind people will do with someone they have a casual relationship with. When I was in college in the early 90's teaching staff - no matter what level were held to that high a standard. As for strangers approaching me or chasing me down for my number - maybe it's a cultural difference (and there is no "history" there and I'm not "uptight" about relationships) but that's just not on. Seriously it's not "romantic" to insist on a complete stranger giving you their contact details.

One of the top three or four love songs ever. Haunting, Beautiful. When Mr. Richie Passes, this is the song he will be remembered for. Video behind it was a bit odd.

The most romantic song ever and you are the only one that reacted to it. It is ironic that the lady in the video looks just like you
