Do you want to improve your embroidery? There are many ways to do this, but here is an easy one - get better applique scissors.
In this video, I am going to show you a few types of applique scissors that are specifically designed for applique or any in the hoop designs where you need to be able to trim the fabric close to the edge for better-looking embroidery.
If you have not tried duckbill applique scissors, you should get a pair and try them out on your next in the hoop or applique project. They look kind of strange, but they do have a purpose! the duckbill part is there to protect the fabric from accidental cuts or tears. The bill will also protect the sometimes delicate stabilizer as well. Once you get used to using them, you will never want to use applique scissors without a duckbill!!
I have two sets of applique scissors - and they are slightly different. One has a large bend in the scissors and the second pair has less of the bend. The bent part is to make it easier to trim or cut the applique fabric and to help get the applique cut closer to the thread stitch line, and it really makes a big difference, especially in smaller hoops.
The next pair of scissors that I showcase are applique scissors without the duckbill part. These scissors have the nice bend in them to make it easier to cut fabric in the hoop or applique fabric but they don't have the protection of the duckbill. These scissors have a sharp pointy end, and if you are not careful with these applique scissors, you will end up putting a hole in the stabilizer! Yep, I have done that a few times with these scissors!!!
The last pair of scissors have no bend in them, but they are slightly curved at the end, which also helps with trimming applique fabric.
No matter which kind of applique scissors that you use, one of the most important things is that the applique scissors are sharp! if you don't have access to a professional sharpener, then you can pick up a fiskars mini scissor sharpener for very little money. While the fiskars sharpener does not replace professional sharpening, it will keep your applique scissors cutting fabric!

I think that scissors are a personal choice; best chosen after trying the scissor type out. Scissors styles are an individual preference; some feel better than others when being used. I prefer the KAI scissors; they are well made and stay sharp. I like these models: Kai 5100c: 4-inch Needle Craft (Curved Tip) Scissors and the Kai 5130: 5-inch Double Curve Embroidery Scissors or Kai 5130p: 5-inch Blunt-Tip Double Curve Embroidery Scissors.

I can't wait to see you use the duck billed scissors. I've had mine for over 20 years and don't think I've been using them correctly. 😳

I have used duckbills for ages. But I was taught that the bill always went under the fabric when you cut. I’ve noticed many people using them the opposite way. To me that would be uncomfortable. Thank you for the videos. I really do enjoy watching.

I haven't really ventured into applique yet so therefore I haven't gotten appropriate scissors yet. All I have ATM is straight pointed scissors. FYI- you could possibly contact a local pet groomer or hairdresser and find out who they use to professionally sharpen their scissors. They usually are in the know re: professional sharpeners.

I wish I had this tutorial when I was first learning. I’ve left too much fabric before as well as cut too close and lost a couple of stitches so when the satin stitch ran I fabric separated and left a gap. Thanks for the tutorial!

Yes my favourite sissors are the duck bill and I have been using them for years whilst dress making. I do use a pair of gunolds and a small angled pair of Maderia sissors as well. I'll come clean - I have never sharpened them even though I have the Fiskars sharpener! So guess what I shall be doing tomorrow......

Thank you for this information really useful. I have never tried the duck bill scissors although would like to get a pair. But since I was the lucky winner back along of the gunhold scissors I have found them really good and keep them somewhere safe so nobody else gets there hands on them, I have found my trimming around applique has improves ith these scissors. Before I would either not cut close enough or when trying to get in to corners on certain shapes make a real hash of it to close or sfabric shredding not cutting

I use duckbill scissors sometimes for larger areas but my favorite one for applique is small snips with a curved tip. They are very sharp so you need to be careful but they do a faster job for smaller areas.

My favorite applique scissors are the Gingher curse tip with a bend in the handle. They have a sharp point to get into tight areas, but I have to be very careful and not cut through the applique.

My biggest screw up with trimming appliqué is not getting it cut closely enough. Then the little threads peak out after the area is satin stitched. So frustrating.

Oh I love my duck bill scissors....I believe they were my first embroidery scissors I got and I remember they were expensive lol Never seen a sharpener...cool. I usually just use tin foil folded a few times and then cut through it... I also have tiny pointed scissors...I'm quite the gadget girl.

I do need the variety in my life right now!😂😂😂 I am currently using a pair that when I try to cut into corners I’m shredding more than snipping 😕 I know I need a better pair but for now it’s what I have. They were really sharp when I first got them though! Not so much anymore.... I need one of those sharpeners 😁

Also Sue, where did you purchase the scissors from Gunold you speak of. I looked them up on their web site and the shipping was crazy. I do have a tax ID number, but no savings with the shipping being so pricey.

I find it impossible to find left handed duck billed scissors in UK. I am sure that when I do they will be prohibitively expensive. Thanks for the information. I have right handed duck billed scissors which are really helpful but left handed ones would be so much better. I have the bent scissors which are lovely as they can be used in either hand. The trouble is that left handed scissors need to have the blades the other way around as well so we can see exactly where we are cutting. Having said all that, I am getting better at trimming nice and close. Thank you.
