Omori is a good example of a game you wish you could forget and then play it again blind so that you can force out those goddamn tears you've kept deep inside yourself.

This is actually a certified banger of a video essay. I've been getting pretty desperate for content on this game, and so have been rolling the dice on a lot of obscure channels, but this takes the cake by a mile. You really cut to the most personal insights instead of getting bogged down in generalities and plot synopsis, but also resisted turning the script into unstructured gushing. You also got a hook into me when describing your emotional collapse after finishing the game. It sounds like pretty much the exact reaction I experienced after playing Undertale back in highschool. It _really_ messed me up for a while, and the whole time I spent playing Omori I couldn't shake this creepy feeling. A gut-deep certainty that if I'd played this in 2015, as my 11th-grade, pre Undertale self... it would have been even worse. It was an honestly scary thought, but also an encouraging benchmark of how much I'd evolved emotionally since highschool. As a closing thought, I want to shout out my dude Kel. He gets shit on a lot for having the emotional intelligence of a dump truck, but goddammit this story would be _hopeless_ without him. Sure he can't read a room to save his life, but the one thing he's even worse at is tolerating a _corrupted status quo._ His role in the narrative is to be a sledgehammer that shatters comfortable delusion, broken coping mechanisms, pregnant silence, bitter compromises, and scabs over old wounds. Even though he often lacks the capacity to actually fix his friends' problems, his relentless, bumbling attempts to help at least serve to break the stasis, and thereby allow everyone to eventually work through their problems in their own ways. I really wish I knew someone like Kel.

thank you so much for the kind words! I actually had played Undertale prior to Omori too lol but I think I was too young and in too different a mental state for the more personal aspects of the story to hook into me and resonate as strongly as Omori did. I think being able to unpack my emotions in regards to the game in a video like this actually helped me evolve emotionally in a way too. Processing feelings is hard but this video gave me a great opportunity to ponder on them, and I'm glad that came out in the final product :) Also yeah Kel is seriously underappreciated. His persistence is ultimately what gets everyone to a better place. I honestly wish in hindsight that I'd had worded my thoughts on him as well as you did here. Putting his story significance in terms of the status quo and his indifference to it is a really succinct way of describing his importance. Thank you again for the positive feedback and ideas to think on

@@scurvie575 No need to justify why UT wasn't so much your thing- if I force myself to squint back with enough retrospect I have to admit that, in some absolute sense, Omori probably has a lot more to say. It just seems like these once-in-a-lifetime worldview-altering uber-gutpunch games are more defined by when you play them than what they strictly _are._

To me the reason why omori is so powerful and beautiful is because it's a perfect simulation of what it's like to be a child dealing with truma, unlike certain movies and shows that depicted these things omori let's you live it. omori is easley the hardest game I've ever played not because of hard boss fights or frustrating mechanics. But because of the the emotions that were layed bare and the horrid images it shows. Omori is a game that has helped me so so much that honestly I could never bring myself to say that it's bad.

I hope that people who have also delt with these things I want to say that you should definitely play this game in small doses as you don't want to destroy your self as many others have I hope that all of you can find meaning and propose in this game love you guys and goodnight ❤️

An interesting contrast in the game is the Big Yellow Cat In the Real World, its a calendar, something that tells us the passage of time and likely something Sunny looked at often before the recital day In Headspace, it's something that protects Omori, that he chose as being the favorite and in the Hikikomori route, it actively stops Omori from being able to find the truth, so instead of representing the progression of time, it represents the stagnation of time

The other thing about it is that it's also in the playground, and it's so simply implied that he used to just hide in it whenever the playground became too much for him, emerging from it into the playground like the stump in HeadSpace. It's his safe space, moreso even than White Space.

@Dhalin

This is a rather nice video essay! I would suggest a few things, though: (spoilers) @19:00: We hear Sunny's thoughts in words throughout the entire game: Anytime you check anything, it's him narrating his thoughts about what you're checking, especially the beds. We know this because he refers to his Mom several times, for example the grandfather clocks: "One of two grandfather clocks. They stopped working a long time ago but MOM likes to keep them around." these are obviously Sunny's thoughts. @20:00 "Sunny doesn't want to kill Basil or Mewo": Of course he doesn't. It's hinted at several times that while Omori is Sunny's coping mechanism to help Sunny escape the truth, the game hints that Omori is also that evil side of Sunny that he doesn't want to admit exists. Omori is in control of Headspace, and Omori has violent impulses (hence why he likes knives) and is also prone to hurting himself physically. It's also why Omori has no problems romping about in Headspace stabbing everything that gets in his way and enjoys doing it, and also why his Happy portrait looks so ... sinister. In the end, though, Sunny comes to terms with the fact Omori exists after a long and hard battle and lots of excruciating pain in trying to defeat something that, as the game plainly states, "will not succumb." There is no defeating Omori, Sunny _must_ accept him as being a part of himself and move on, learn to deal with intrusive thoughts and evil impulses. We all have them. @21:00: I think there's multiple reasons why Basil dies in Black Space: The other reason is simply that Basil always finds the Truth that Omori is working so hard to bury again and again and again. And, on the True Route when it's made clear to Omori that he cannot bury the truth this time, Omori himself decides to stab Basil instead of hauling him out of Black Space like he had countless times before. Omori then goes up and sits on his throne of lies and just waits for Sunny to go through the next day, deciding then and there to end everything at the first opportunity since he can no longer fulfill his goal (which is to distract Sunny and keep him from realizing the truth, which is his job as a coping mechanism). Other thoughts: Headspace was very masterfully done. At first, the player is like "WOW SUCH VIVID COLORS! This game is beautiful!" But if you open the door for Kel, and you see the _real_ world, and then return to Headspace... you might notice something: The real world uses full-on greens, browns, and other "real" colors while the Dream World uses off-colors. Kinda-sorta green-ish, but not actually green for the trees and the grass. Dirt is a shade of purple instead of brown, and in fact everything in Headspace seems to be washed with a pastel color filter, seemingly blue or purple (maybe because Mari wanted to dye her hair purple?) with the exception of some areas like Orange Oasis. Just comparing the Playground to Faraway Park, you can see just how ... dead... Playground feels, despite what you first thought of it the first time you went there. And then the Photo Album itself gets into this too, seeing the pictures (to the tune of By Your Side) you think "awww, how cute!" but then you see the REAL album later while A House for Flowers plays and then you go back to Headspace again and it feels so hollow and empty, everything color-washed like it is. Showing you Headspace before the real world has a very powerful effect here.

although i've thankfully never experienced any mental health issues Omori still resonated woth me. im young but i'd say if a game can resonate with a young person like me who has never had to deal with mental health issues i would say that's really something. also Final Duet is one of the most emotional songs i've ever listened to other than the song Undertale from Undertale

Throughout playing this game, I felt real pain for Basil. Both in the dream world and real world sections, everytime Sunny/Omori and his friends were bonding together, I kept thinking "Basil isn't here. He's missing out on this, and he's all alone." When Sunny and his friends finally faced the tree stump, or entered the tree house for the last time... Basil wasn't there with them. It hurt me to think that he was missing these precious moments with his friends. He barely got to spend time with Sunny before he moved.

Omori is such a great experience. I agree with everything you said. I think such a big think I took from the game is how crucial it is to move on and forgive yourself. Moving on isn't easy, and it won't make things better exactly, but it gives you the opportunity to get better. Great video! It made all the emotions come back. You have a nice narration voice.

This is a really good video, one can easily tell you put a lot of thought and soul into it. It also made me think about how important contrast is to induce emotions. Part of what makes the horror in Omori hit is how quirky and fun the world is. On the other hand, despite how disturbing the first Basil death in black space is, seeing him explode like a watermelon was so absurd that it made me laugh. And despite how thoughtful and heartfelt this video is, going to your channel and immediately seeing "HOW TO MARRY AND SEX LYN FIRE EMBLEM" got me rolling on the floor!

God the way you’ve put it,I wonder if stabbing yourself to wake up isn’t just to hit home that Sunny hates himself but more Omori would have to kill himself to force himself to not stay in headspace. The better world to a hikkikomori

This video reflects my feeling so much after completing the game recently. The more you analyze this game, the more you'd notice how amazing this game actually is. You cover very well with the characters , music, and background, but you miss a few aspect I also find why Omori can has such a lasting impact on us. It is the contrast they use to illustrate the inner psyche of Sunny and real world. It is rare for a game to use horror to convey such powerful foreshadowing/ symbolism that push the narrative to next level. It is the contrast between the heartwarming scenes/ relationship and the horror that makes the character's and narrative so relatable/ touching. I think this game has by far the best use of horror of any game that actually makes the story more deep/ more mature.

0:10 Ghibli, that I have watched since I have memory. GTA: San Andreas, which introduced the concept of games with plot to me. Ghost Trick, which showed me what personality and empathy could be in a game. UNDERTALE, who introduced me to fandoms, thinking about what a game means to us, and a lot more. Homestuck, how hilarity and longevity could combine. Breaking Bad, which showed that one could make a humongous story out of a two-episode thing, and what was considered "The best hour in color television history". Omori left all of them in the dust. Let's watch, then 0:40 Heard that 200 times. I am sad I could only muster 3 tears and 2 days of unproductivity +19 it's the new pinnacle. I will be nostalgic for this at least for 12 years 1:47 I fucking hate that I don't have cash for it. At least Merg did an amazing job at it 3:45 Would have been a huge missplay. Also, weird paralells with deltarune 7:25 I was genius. One of the best implementations of menu RPG I have ever seen (not Bullet Hell, not many timers. EB and FF are examples) 10:57 I love this. I also love that wether by trauma (hellmari->Kel) or willful wrong choice (this) you can gamethrow and just get a horrible ending with no music 11:51 And it's so much better executed than previous attempts (The Fallen Child) 12:40 That must be weird. I know myself so well I have never seen anyone who is me. Not even for a profile picture. Otherwise, this is the most real cast I have ever seen. And I have seen the above works 17:15 I disagree. The graveyard scenes, interactions with his mom, and one of the Neutral endings paint a really good picture of everything his fights and drinks don't. Maybe not as much as the rest but c'mon, BASIL gets less character time 18:25 Word 20:32 Now HERE's where I relate. Fucking hell those are terrible. And they keep happening. Good thing I have practice because otherwise... awwwkwaaard! 20:53 Maybe. To me it was more OMORI gatekeeping the Truth as he always did. Only more... proactively 22:48 Sure. I found weird before this game that people online had a 300% greater than IRL chance of being 1) politically controversial, 2) LGBTQWhatever 3) Depressed/Anxious/the rest. Nowadays, I find myself accepting it as a fact of life. I really gotta do research on that 24:09 inb4 I go to reddit and post my analysis of why Sunny gets forgiven by everyone within the year 25:30 Shu Takumi, Schmu Takumi. Toby Fox? Moby Sox. C418? Bernardo Rosenfeld. All in the dust. So many songs, all fit so well! Literally the average here is more than the upper third of AA songs. I'm telling ya. Masterpiece 27:31 That track either took all the lessons to heart or was ahead of it's time by 4 years 30:12 Well said, dude. Hope you do well. Have a Good Morning!
