Intriguing and suspenseful intro to George Lazenby as the new James Bond after Sean Connery

George must be credited ( some will disagree) for making this movie rank among the best bond films. The pressure had to be enormous. Saw this a couple of times in 1969 and loved it. It was refreshing with a real romantic story, totally different from past bonds. It was weak at the box office which it should not have been, people did not see or accept that this is a good movie. Their loss.

Totally agree

While I agree this is easily one of the very best Bond films, it's not because of Lazenby. He absolutely did a solid job considering he wasn't even an actor, but his portrayal is still lackluster and awkward, and most of what he performed well was in fact a credit to the director and his co-stars like Diana Rigg who held him up and made him look better. It was easily the best Bond film script, sticking closer to the Fleming source material than any other as well as that novel being Fleming's best. To me, Rigg is the star of the movie, not Lazenby. Gabriele Ferzetti also added a lot of weight to it. Though I do find Telly Savalas' Blofeld portrayal to be very dull and anti-climactic to the aura and build-up surrounding the character especially in this story. That being said, it was only because they had a new unknown Bond that they made such an effort to revise the Bond films back to the Fleming source. Had Connery been able to do OHMSS, they would have no doubt ruined the story with more silliness and probably more space rockets or something. Lazenby's solid and dynamic fight scenes were also ruined by a shoddy, messy editing style and he would have looked much better had they given him a better haircut and wardrobe. They also made a bad decision in dubbing George with George Baker's silly voice when under cover as Hilary Bray, especially considering it's for a large chunk of the movie. Some of the dad jokes they gave him were blatantly tacked on last-minute and are terrible (literally some are dubbed over when he's not even moving his lips...). A further small nit-pick of mine is that they absolutely should have included the touch of Blofeld hurling one of his guards down the bobsled run to his death for raping one of the girls (from the novel), which would have added a good dose of extra menace and complexity to the Blofeld character in that film.

@@AD-kv9kj I disagree with some of your points, George does carry the film , true the other actors have more experience but this story took a different direction and how do you know Connery's would have made it better because we are not used to see bond in a real romantic relationship. Lazenby's touching performance at the end is a real tear jerker, who knows if Connery who actually was tired of the role by this time would have put his heart into it. For this reason George was the better choice.

@@randyacuna3248 do you know the Hitchcock's film MARNIE, with Sean Connery? If you look that film you will image perfectly Sean in OHMSS, also in the tragic final. Do you think Sean isn't able to make a James Bond also in love? He knows well his job.
@randyacuna32482 жыл бұрын
@@grazianoracciatti2728 my point is that Sean was tired of bond . He looked it in twice giving a going through the motion poor performance. George was fresh . Plus as you can clearly see by the next year after secret service sean had aged plus looking out of shape. He gives a poor performance in this disappointing movie compared to a film like Russia.

Yeah his Agent shit the bed, but more importantly Lazenby also never wanted to be “Bond” he wanted to be “Lazenby”. Hence the beard and long hair he grew when the film was released.

They gave him a 5 picture deal, and on the advice of his Irish agent, he turned them down. Imagine how good Diamonds Are Forever would have been w Lazenby/Hunt...

I've seen most of the James Bond films. Out of all of them, this one felt the most genuine to me. There were actual personal stakes for Bond in this film. And even if you didn't like George Lazenby's acting, with the exception of Daniel Craig, he felt like the most believable Bond to me and not just a "badass secret agent" archetype.

Flawed but genuine, Vulnerable, And had character growth. There'll be no other human bond like this james bond. George Lazenby truly gave humanity to this iconic character. Despite his woody acting, he had a heart. This is the most unique of the bond films, and was the last of the good ones. Let's give a toast of respect to this actor and this movie, For truly being the most Is action packed and thought provoking Experience In the bond series ever. On her majesty's secret service is definitely my favorite now. And hopefully it will gain a cult following for years to come. 🇬🇧🍸

Lazenby was 30 years old when he began- had he signed the 5 picture deal- he would have been a multi-millionaire, and Bond into the 1980's! IF he had stopped at 5, he would have been only 43! One year younger than when Moore BEGAN his run.... Lazenby in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, Darling. Since that begins with Bond at Tracy's gravesite, that would have brought him full circle.... and with "BLOFELD" returning, it would have been a great way to sign off.... I don't think OCTOPUSSY would have been a good intro title picture.

sucks bond doesn't smoke anymore
@horrorfanandy4647 Жыл бұрын
I don't have a huge problem with it. As Bond himself puts it in Tomorrow Never Dies, it's a "Filthy habit" Obviously I know that 99% of people wouldn't take up smoking just because they saw Bond do it, and I don't have a problem with it in these old films, but it's not a unique element of his character, it's just a very unpleasant habit people had back then, and to a lesser extent now, so promoting it just isn't a good idea I think. Now the Martini's and other booze is a different story, because that is sacred. Anyway, with that being said, I would have liked for them to make an exception to the rule and have him light Felix's cigar in No Time To Die as a way of honouring his memory. They kill Felix off and then just forget about him straight after, it was really odd.
