Considering George Lazenby had no prior film experience, I think he did pretty well. It's kind of a shame that he didn't do anymore films, but I think the whole experience soured him on making movies. It wasn't a bad film at all, even though it's not my favorite. Thanks for the reaction.

A lot of people forget George Lazenby but I think he was pretty good. It was a bit of an awkward film with Connery leaving and Bond getting married and all the behind-the-scenes production issues at the time so Lazenby took a lot of that heat but he deserves to be remembered along with Timothy Dalton as Bonds that didn't last long. It's an important film because of Bond's marriage, it's referred to in later films, and Bond did marry in the books and his wife was killed, Bond blamed himself and was never quite the same. Tracy was played by Diana Rigg (later Dame, Diana Rigg), she was one of three girls to appear in the Bond films who were also in the British Spy TV series 'The Avengers' and later 'The New Avengers', the character of 'Pussy Galore' in 'Goldfinger' was played by Honour Blackman who was 'Cathy Gale' in 'The Avengers', Diana Rigg who was 'Tracy' in this, played 'Emma Peel' in 'The Avengers', both of them had just finished in 'The Avengers' before being in their respective Bond films, the 'English Girl' in Blofeld collection in this was played by, Joanna Lumley, she would later star as 'Purdy' in, 'The New Avengers' Spy TV series.

The producers were so happy with George's version of James Bond they wanted him to do the next few movies. However George wasn't sure and asked his manager for his advice and he manager said not to do them! His career went downhill from there!

This movie was heartbreaking, yet heartfelt at the same time. Even though I missed Connery, this was a wonderful movie. To quote M from a later film, "Top marks, 007!" ❤️

Iconic film of the saga, over the years it was gaining a certain cult category. A favorite of Nolan and James Cameron, who paid tribute to him in scenes from Inception and True Lies. And No Time To Die, the last of Daniel Craig as Bond, also pays homage to him at times and in the music as well, Hans Zimmer plays themes from this score and the film closes with the theme of Louis Armstrong - We Have All The Time in The World, the same from this film.

As always, without spoiling anything, "Diamonds Are Forever" up next is another big flip in style. It's one that fans either love or hate; there's no real inbetween. Bond has had only one great love. Never let any latter produced film try to convince you otherwise. Lazenby wasn't bad at all, ultimately the reason they didn't stick with him is apparently he turned into something of a prima donna after he didn't stink up the joint. It's no surprise that the greatest "Bond Girl" victory story belongs to Diana Rigg, because Diana Rigg.

Somehow, the fact that both Bond and Blofeld are played by different actors kinda helps to obscure the fact that it makes no sense that Bond would even try to claim to be someone else to Blofeld or that Blofeld wouldn’t Immediately recognize him at first glance, since they’d just met face-to-face in the last movie.

I never noticed before that Blofeld wore a ski hat that mimicked his baldness. Cracked me up that you were so incensed about the ending that you (seemingly) missed the great song We Have All The Time In The World, sung by Satchmo. It still makes me tear up to hear it. Nice reaction, Jen.

I'm a huge fan of Sean Connery as 007. But his tongue in cheek portrayal of Bond wouldn't have fit with this film. Lazenby knocked it out of the park. And Diana Rigg is so much of a presence. She's the greatest pure actor to play the female lead in an 007 film. I never refer to Diana Rigg as a Bond girl. Diana Rigg's Tracy will always be Bond's wife! The ending was perfect to immortalize Tracy and add a tragic depth to 007. Great reaction.

I think you would enjoy seeing Dianna Rigg (Tracy) as Emma Peel karate-ing her way through bad guys in the "The Avengers" TV series.

I think this one is a top 3 Bond film....Lazenby is pretty damn good, maybe not Connery...but best music in a Bond Film, best girl ever (Diana Rigg is amazing)...best scenery and lair (the Swiss Alps is incredible), great editing, Moneypenny throughout the film...the emotion, the ending...so much greatness...

Piz Gloria (the alergy clinic) still exists as a restaurant in Switzerland. The view is breath taking and they have a mini Bond museum, about the filming of OHMSS. Some of the original sets and props are still there, decorating the restaurant and the first floor. I visited some years ago and I really recomend it for fans. 👍

The cinematography is very well done, and strikingly different in this one! Reminds me of The Prisoner (1967) in some ways. And Lazenby has incredible moments, especially at the somber end. Diana Rigg has a wonderful presence and shines well in this movie! Another wonderful reaction!

Y'know, this film got me thinking about Bond and his relationships, considering that this is the one where he tied the knot. I'm honestly convinced that if Tracy lived, James would have left his womanising days behind him, what with him being a gentleman and all. My personal theory/headcanon is that this ending is exactly why Bond never settled down with any woman he hooked up with going forward, because he never truly got over losing Tracy and was unwilling to risk loving anyone the same way again in case he lost them as well. Even in later 007 movies, there are a few things I think support it. -The next film, 'Diamonds are Forever,' starts with Bond on the warpath, ruthlessly hunting Blofeld down, obviously in a vengeful mood. -After meeting Anya in 'The Spy Who Loved Me,' she recounts that he had many lady friends, but was only married once. As soon as she mentioned that, Bond immediately cut her off, obviously wanting to avoid the subject. -The introduction of 'For Your Eyes Only' starts with Bond visiting Tracy's grave. -After Felix and Della are married in 'License to Kill,' Della jokingly suggests Bond getting married next as he catches her thrown garter. Bond is clearly uncomfortable at this and quickly leaves. When Della asks what she said to upset him, Felix tells her he was married once, a long time ago. -Shortly before the climax in 'Goldeneye,' Trevelyan mocks Bond over some of his cliches, suggesting his womanising is a coping mechanisms for his guilt over those he failed to save. -The Daniel Craig films evidently follow a separate timeline from the classic Bond films. However, Bond is clearly haunted by Vesper's death in 'Casino Royale,' all the way up into 'No Time to Die' when he visits her grave early in the movie. What I'm trying to say is, behind the macho charisma, infinite rizz and casual sexism, Bond is a broken man who has been denied happiness and peace in his life, driven purely by his immense sense of justice. He can't settle down and be anything but a government-issue killer, so he might as well be the best at it.

The ending was a Watershed event and helped shaped the character. Tracy's Death is a result of Bond being in that Lifestyle and describes his Cavalier attitude of being a functional alcoholic who sleeps with numerous Women as a coping mechanism.

This was the first Bond film I got to see in the theater. I remember all the hype and uncertainty about the film and the New Guy. I really liked it and still do.

I am glad you enjoyed this one. It is one of the most important in terms of Bond's character growth. At the time and still to this day Lazenby isn't generally well received. Due in no small part to himself being problematic on set, and telling the press he didn't believe bond would work in the 70's. So it's unlikely anyone would have wanted him to continue on as Bond. Looking forward to Diamonds are Forever.

Bond being greeted by a Saint Bernard dog is actually pretty accurate for the region. The breed originated in the Italian Swiss border area, and are named after a road pass in Switzerland, and were bred for rescue work by a local hospice group to dig out people caught in avalanches. Fun fact, puppies weren’t trained by people, they watched the adult dogs rescue people to learn.

This is one of my favorite Bond movies. By necessity, they had to adjust the formula. As a result, I think this is a better "film" than the last couple. Much more down-to-Earth, at least. Connery is missed, but I think Lazenby does a good job. And it ditches much of the camp that was starting to creep into the Connery films and would seriously hurt the forthcoming films over the next two decades. Diana Rigg and Telly Savalas are great in their roles (I wish Telly had played the character again).

I highly recommend the Austin Powers trilogy. You will love it!

As a nigh lifelong Bond fan, this is still my #1 fave. The closest to the source novel and a surprisingly solid turn from Lazenby and what an amazing setting at Piz Gloria! Also one of my fave Bond girls. Diana Rigg is so incredibly beautiful and also smart and tough! 🙂

i was a Bond fan a long time before i finally watched this film and it became my favorite. It ends like the book. Only difference is in the next book Bond had a breakdown because of it, whereas in the movies they followed up with the silliest of the films.

I'm glad you liked this one. It is tricky to adjust to the loss of Connery, but this movie ages like a fine wine. George Lazenby of South Wales, Australia. He was an model and did commercials for a chocolate snack called Big Fry. His look, walk and talk were unique. Casted as the next Bond after Connery was luck of the draw. OHMSS is Lazenby's first film and he is quite charismatic as 007. Another mission, battling with Spectre, more action and more quips. Tracy's death was the most shocking moment in the franchise history and it wasn't fair that he could never be happy. However OHMSS showed how much of an human being that Bond is and not just a secret agent. Lazenby is still kicking at age 83 as the oldest living of actors who've played Bond. Diana Rigg passed away in 2020 and was an veteran actress of many mediums with iconic career, from the spy series, The Avengers (1965-1968) to Game of Thrones (2013-2017).

This is the most wildly underrated Bond film of all time, IMO. As someone who's grown up with Bond and been a fan since I can't remember, this one ranks top 3-4 for me. I honestly don't care if Lazenby did only one film, he was actually quite good in his own way. The score, the late 60s vibe, the Olympics atmosphere and - of course - the ending are all just fantastic. I like to call it an "acquired taste" Bond, because it might need a couple of viewings to click with people. But when it does, it's worth it.

I really liked your outrage at the end, you were totally unprepared for that end. Because George Lazenby was new they wanted a strong lead bad guy, so they got the fantastic Telly Savalas. It's Live and Let Die soon, the Bond movie equivalent of a blaxploitation. Roger Moore is the Bond I grew up with.

Great adventure, good action, great chemistry between Bond and Tracy, (which by the way is an excellent Bond Girl) and of course one of the best (and saddest) endings of the whole saga. Not everything is perfect of course, the editing for example is a little..."raw", even messy sometimes but either way, this film deserves respect

Her pink handkerchief had come off and the bell of golden hair hung down and hid her face. Bond put his arm round her shoulders, across which the dark patches had begun to flower. He pressed her against him. He looked up at the young man and smiled his reassurance. ’It’s all right.’ He said in a clear voice as if explaining something to a child. ‘It’s quite all right. Sean Connery comes back in the next one for his last official Bond film. Diamonds are Forever is cheesy and is more a fun tribute to Sean Connery than anything else. It has a strong seventies vibe. Also has one of the best theme songs. Many Bond fans don't like it but personally i find it original, sexy and fun to watch! Hope you enjoy! 😚

Becoming Bond is a very good documentary about Lazenby and his trajectory from car mechanic in Australia to his brief stint as Bond. It’s a fascinating, if somewhat tragic story. Looking at imdb, it seems he has stayed in the game a little bit and is still appearing on film and tv to this day. It’s streaming on Hulu. Also, Everything or Nothing is a really great doc about the entire franchise. Not sure it’s streaming anywhere now, though. Perhaps for rent on Prime? Worth a look for any Bond fan though.

If this film was Connery’s swan song as Bond, it’d be as famous as Goldfinger. As it is, Connery decided when he began filming YOLT, that he wanted to drop the role of Bond, he was struggling to manage the hype around the series, and feared becoming typecast and would struggle to find acting roles. So they began auditioning and around 400 actors were considered. Among them Oliver Reed (a very notable thespian actor known for playing Bill Sykes in the 1968 Oliver Twist movie), and also Timothy Dalton, who rejected the offer because he was 25 at the time and felt too young for the role. They settled on Lazenby (an Australian) after seeing him in chocolate bar ads. He went to the fullest extent to impress in the audition, wearing a Rolex, wearing a Savile Row suit that had been ordered by Connery that Connery never collected, even going to Connery’s barber shop. He gained the part after showing how tough he was by accidentally punching a professional wrestler in the face who was a stunt coordinator. He was offered 7 films, but his agent told him in more or less these words “This James Bond business is a chore, and to be a secret agent into the 70s would be archaic, do one film and get out”. He took his agent’s advice. So Lazenby is very much the black sheep of the Bond films. He’s pretty wooden here, Connery lite many have called him. Had he done more films he probably would’ve gained some experience. His best moment of acting in the film is coincidentally his last few seconds imho. Minus him, everything about this film is grand and classic Bond stuff. No one can beat Donald Pleasance but Savalas is pretty iconic and I think his casting was so he could be a more physical Blofeld to match Bond. The cinematography is some of the best in the series. Peter Hunt made his directorial debut here, having been the series’ film editor and second unit director. The shots composed are absolutely stunning.

While I'm still not sold on George Lazenby's performance, Diana Rigg did a great job covering for his inexperience, and I don't think Sean Connery, especially after how checked out he was in You Only Live Twice would have been able to handle falling in love and all that. So I'm not one of those people who thinks Sean would have faired better. George even summoned a tear at the end of the movie and the director ordered the scene be reshot because "James Bond doesn't cry." But he can get married? I say once you say Bond can settle down with one woman, all bets are off and Ian Fleming was fine with that, so I'm sure he would have been fine with Bond showing some humanity. The guy wasn't a robot.

Telly Savalas, goes on to play "Kojack"! A police detective series. Kojack gave up smoking cigarettes and to replace that habit he began consuming "Tootsie Roll Pops" and thus their sales increased! He was Jennifer Aniston's godfather, but he died a long time before her father did! John Aniston was in "Days of Our Lives". Her sitcom "Friends" had fun with that show, by having Joey become a cast member! 😀 Ergo, Jennifer never played a role in the daytime drama. However, actress Christina Applegate, who played one of Rachel's sisters, was in "Days of Our Lives"! Her first role too! She was used to play a baby boy! 👶 John Aniston's role as "Victor Kiriakis" was inspired by his best friend Telly's part in this movie! Telly & George Lazenby? They go on to be in WW2 movies too! If I recall right, one of them reunited them. 🤔

I personally enjoy all of the Bond actors and movies. They all have their own style for sure and I think you will love them all. Plus the gadgets get better and better.

Glad you watched this. I'm one of those who encouraged you and warned you it was a very different vibe. It's always hard to predict who will love this one or hate it. It's probably the most controversial Bond (except for maybe the latest one). It's definitely one of the most important Bonds, and it's the longest. Some say it drags, others like the romanticism. I think Tracy was the best Bond girl ever. Lazenby got terrible advice from some friends. I understand they encouraged him to demand an exorbitant amount of money, and the producers dropped him to get Connery back for one more film--Diamonds are Forever--and paid HIM a lot instead. A lot of fans reacted negatively to Lazenby anyway. Getting Connery back one more time gave the producers some breathing space to search for a new Bond--and they found Roger Moore (who had actually been considered back when Connery first landed Dr. No). Moore was actually a few months older than Connery, but he actually looked younger than Connery in 1972--at least IMHO. Diamonds are Forever is very different from OHMSS. If you enjoy the Connery Bond, you'll probably like it. DAF follows the Goldfinger formula. The different actors playing Blofeldt (#1) is almost as jarring as the switch to Lazenby. I like Savalas the best in that role--except maybe the faceless Blofeldt in FRWL and Thunderball. Moore brought a different set of strengths and weaknesses to Bond. Handsome and fucking suave as hell. Not very convincing in the physical department--but he managed okay for quite a few years. Jen--I recommend you continue just the way you are. You seem to be enjoying them, and your viewers are getting a kick out of watching you watch Bond. I know I am. I hope to see your reaction to DAF in my feed in the not-too-distant future.

This is my favorite Bond movie. It shows him as being more human. I also had a crush on Diana Rigg as a pre teen. That ski chase is one of my favorite all time movies scenes.

Jen, another outstanding reaction! Lazenby talks about his one and only outing as Bond as a humiliating experience. Why? Because he went to the movie's premiere party unaware that the producers had dubbed over part of his dialog track with someone else, making him sound like a foppish dandy and silly for a large chunk of the film, and some important people attending were laughing thinking his performance was bad. Lazenby felt like this tanked his acting career before it even got started and it wasn't even his fault. Never before nor since "OHMSS" has Bond been overdubbed when he was pretending to be another person.

Despite that big honking mole or brown spot on his face, George was a popular enough model in Australia to get the attention of those that made this movie. Even Felix Lighter's bride doesn't last long. She's played by a blonde from "Three's Company" and I won't say which one. 😉 The death scene was so popular with writers that it became a fad or trend to kill brides off and make the heroes cry! It even happened to "James Tiberius Kirk"! "Bonanza" seemed to be really hot hard by it! The boys didn't get to become successful husbands and fathers until they were offscreen! But we don't know that until the advent of "Bonanza: The Next Generation"! It wasn't as popular as "Star Trek: The Next Generation" so it didn't last very long! 😮

It's kind of funny because this was my dad's favorite James Bond only for the sole reason that Diana Rigg(Tracie) was in it; his younger self's celebrity crush. I have to agree with him for this because she is a very special, unique, and beautiful Bond girl and was a distinction in that she wasn't a villain and could defend herself after capture.

OHMSS is an incredible Bond movie. Great cast, great script, great score. From recollection it was one of the first Bond films to have the soundtrack marketed as a separate entity. Bond poster cover, open out into a gatefold George Lazenby in his blue ski suit. In the cinema my mother worked in they set up a scalerectric (model car racing) track in an alpine like environment. If you could beat the lap record you won a holiday to the Alps. I was the one who set the lap record.

The late great Diana Rigg. A former Avenger (Emma Peel - not Marvel) one of TV abd film's first female badasses, and the great Lady Olena from Game of Thrones.

Of all the James Bond movies, this is the one closest to the original novel-- it's close to scene-by-scene the same (there are some differences, but not many). Including that ending, which is word-for-word from the novel. That's part of why it has a different feel than the previous movies: by this point the movie character had already developed in a very different direction from the Bond of the novels, but here the novel Bond puts in an appearance. (It's also why Blofeld didn't recognize Bond right away, even though they met in the previous movie: in the novel they had never actually seen each other before this story.)

The two original Bond novels following the novel of OHMSS portrayed Bond as an emotional wreck slowly recovering from Tracy’s death, particularly the first one. Sadly the producers of the films chose to act for years as if this film never happened. In fact, Bond wouldn’t be this “human” again until Timothy Dalton took over the role in 1987.

This is actually my favorite bond movie, love Lazemby, love the music, love the tragedy (it fits for a character like Bond).

This film was considered a failure when it first came out...but now it is considered one of the best, some say the best, James Bond films.

0:12 I'm about to tell you an anecdote about bad (British) accents. First, though, you have to know that in my area, we are currently having a Christmas fair every weekend inspired by the Victorian London of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" full of volunteers who act as characters from Dickens' novel and as random Londoners of the era. Second, you have to know that, when Kevin Costner played Robin Hood, he was widely mocked for his poor, and often nonexistent, attempts at an English accent. Mel Brooks' poked fun at this in his parody "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" by having Cary Elwes declare "Unlike some Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent!" Because I am totally into the fair (you should see how many Victorian/Edwardian style coats, jackets, waistcoats, shirts with detachable collars, cravats, and cravat pins I own) and because I am constantly helping fair attendees with directions and schedules, people often ask me why I don't work at the fair, and I tell them "Because! Just like some Robin Hoods, I CAN'T speak with an English accent!"

Jen, I hope you read this.... A few things you need to understand!! 1. OHMSS the film is almost word for word like the Ian Fleming novel On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Tracey dies at the end of the book, and a policeman drive up to the car. What they filmed is 100% accurate to the final scene, on the final page of the novel. 2. On the first take of Lazenby holding Tracey dead in his arms, cradling her head in his hands, Lazenby really cried but the idiot director Peter Hunt told him to do it again because "James Bond doesn't die" is what he said, yet they used audio of Bond crying!! Peter Hunt robbed us off a great moment. 3. The Aston Martin DBS used in the film is here in Australia. An Aussie bought it, not knowing it was the car in the film, but later realised it was. 4. Your multiple accents were impeccable and complex. Very impressive :) How you blended several was mind boggling lol.

Keep in mind the books were filmed out of order, so in the novel Bond was legitimately not sure if the Count was actually Blofeld because they had never met face to face. This movie essentially erases the previous one from continuity. It’s also probably the closest adaptation to the novel in the entire series- they had real “guts” to keep Fleming’s ending.

“We Have All The Time In The World” was the last song recorded by the great Louis Armstrong. He died soonafter.

I think many people disregard this entry since George only did one, but it's a decent entry, and certainly contains a pivotal moment for the character.

This was definitely an underrated entry in the franchise with a lot of first in the series. Diana Riggs who I luved in the Avengers TV series & GOT was a great Bond girl & the first that could hold her own.

What always gets me is the song "We've Got all the Time in the World" was sung by Louis Armstrong, who died shortly after its relief and knew he was terminal. He was too sick to play his trumpet for the recording. It's a beautiful, if ironic, song.

You may recognise Countess Tracy as Olenna Tyrell from Game of Thrones. At the time she was famous for playing Emma Peel in The Avengers.

The mountaintop resort was a half-finished revolving restaurant for which the producers offered to pay to finish construction, in return for unlimited filming access. It's still open to the public today and includes an extensive museum about the Bond films and OHMSS in particular, with spectacular views in the restaurant. I visited there in June, needing to take four cable cars from the valley where it was over 30 Celsius, to the top where there was thick snow on the ground.

wow! i haven’t watched this film in a long time but through your eyes realized how good it is. Diana Rigg is my favorite bond girl… but also my all around ideal growing up with The Avengers on TV. If you haven’t caught up with that show you have a thrill ahead of you. Your commentary was, as always, a joy to behold!
