Maintaining a peripheral awareness of the body being a basis for everything, which is impermanent in itself, brings sharp and intense anxiety.

Bhante, Brilliant talk as usual. Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu. The part about cultivating Jhana was a great insight. It is not unlike cooking or creating a painting in a sense. Have you done a video on the Anapana Sati Sutta? It would be great to hear your thoughts on it. With Metta Luv

Hi Ajahn, really liked your talk :) Based on this talk, am I right to assume that the pleasure of Jhanas is like an acquired taste ? Example: Mindfulness of the breath meditation is boring in the beginning, but over time as we practice it and also remove other stimuli that might gratify us in more obvious ways (i.e. sense restraint) we develop a liking (a taste) for it and that is when the Jhana is experienced.

Yes, indeed. From the point of view of sensuality, the pleasure of renunciation/jhana/seclusion is a VERY acquired taste.

Ajahn, would you consider the Jhanas that the boddhisatta encountered prior to awakening under the guidance of those previous teachers were different from the Jhanas the Buddha taught or instructed his followers to “do Jhana”?

Yes because those teachers did not know the escape from Dukkha. The Buddha taught jhana in reference to that - as in the complete freedom from liability to suffering.

Venerable banthe; Very much appreciate if you can explain the meaning of "animiththa samadi" . Also apart from "samatha poorwangama vipassana", "vipassana poorwangama samatha" and "samatha vipassana yuganadda" I have heard of "shushka vipassana". Would like to know what is mean by "shushka vipassana". Many thanks. 🙏

1. There is really no practical benefit in EXPLAINING more refined states of samadhi. Understanding those would come naturally if the groundwork has been properly established and developed by oneself, otherwise, it virtually always results in mistaken notions and views. 2. The term comes from later (probably Commentarial) interpretations of vipassana and the idea that one can exercise PURE observation and insight, WITHOUT a context of one's intentions and views. We often address in our talks why this is a contradictory practice.
