Hey Rip, funny story and a question. Yesterday I was squatting 315 for the first time. My last rep of my last set was a real grinder. Then some asshole ran up behind me screaming and grabbed the bar. He ended up dragging it down my back to "save me". He told me it was my fault because I was leaning forward so much. I will say I noticed he had a CrossFit tank top on. So, that's my funny story. My question is, where should I bury the body?

Scales that estimate body composition by measuring electrical impedance can get in the ballpark, but the measurements vary wildly depending on various factors, the most influential of which is the relative dryness of the skin. If your feet are dry, you'll show a higher bodyfat percentage. If your feet are moist, you'll show a lower bodyfat percentage. The next biggest factor is relative hydration - if you're dehydrated, this will change the reading, and if you have spent all day chugging water, this will change the reading. I own one of these scales, and see a fluctuation of up to 6-7% depending on time of day, whether I've been barefoot for hours or I've pulled my socks off, how "warmed up" I am, etc. If you're trying to pinpoint whether you're at 15% bodyfat versus 18% bodyfat, you're not going to be able to do it with one of these scales. They're just not precise enough. You'll need a dexa scan for that level of precision. However, that doesn't make impedance-measuring scales entirely useless. Provided you measure yourself under consistent conditions (e.g. every morning immediately after taking a shit), you can get a pretty accurate picture of changes in your bodyfat percentage over time, and begin to see distinct trends. I would recommend them to anyone who is overweight or obese and looking to monitor their fat loss over time. For someone who is at a normal body composition, they're not as useful.

If anybody reading this can help, I asked the question at 53:09 about training a younger trainee. Rip is advising that he can not effectively train until tanner stage 4. Trainee in question has since turned 14 and based on the criteria I believe he is in tanner stage 4 (deep voice permanent, acne etc.) I obviously dont want to push him too far too soon but he is really excited about training and his numbers go up every session, 75kg deadlift and 55 kg squat now. Should I force him to wait until he is 15 and if so what can I let him do in the meantime?
@billytrevathan64053 жыл бұрын
Fourteen and having developed a deeper voice, he should be in good shape to train heavy. Personally, I was “fully developed” by 13 1/2, 14 (what doesn’t grow after puberty). Hey Rip. I'm a 37 year old male 180 cm and 109 kg (I guess about 5'10 240 freedom units). Been deadlifting 190 kg for 5, squatting 177,5 kg for 3x5, benching 100 kg for 3x5. Living in Socialist Sweden I have not had covid affect me much (well, except for the me having had it part I guess). I have been getting back into Muay Thai which I was very into training in my 20's and my goal is to compete again in a bunch of amature fights before I turn 40. Now super heavy weight is 91kg+ and I'm to damn short for that so I need to lose weight to at least close to 91kg. I would like to still get stronger or at least not lose much strength. You have any input on strength training on a caloric deficit while doing a bunch of competing training?

I don't agree about using more weight with barbell press. The press is the most shit exercise on planet earth. I can easily do one hand presses with 120 lbs dumbbells for sets of ten but not even close to doing a 225 press. The bottom motion of the barbell press has zero leverage and you also awkwardly bob around. The fact no one can just progress on the lift without doing other stuff says it all, it's a bad exercise. With dumbbell presses you don't stall out because it's not an inefficient garbage lift like the barbell press.
