Today I'm answering some of the recent questions.

Peace finds it difficult to overcome fear of fear and heart palpitations that come with it.

Alina, thank you so much for your answer! It was more than kind of you to spend your time on it and going into every detail! And you are so right with everything you said about feeling like you have to do or to work on certain things is putting pressure on yourself. I sometimes feel bad when I have to cry or feel defeated because it feels like I fail at accepting but as you said, crying can also bring relief and shows your honest emotions and that can be helpful too. I just wanted to say that I found one of your comments ( I think it was below your video about how to handle anxious thoughts) especially helpful where you explain the difference between sleep deprivation and insomnia and how someone with insomnia will sleep even when they don‘t think that they do. I found that very calming, like: I don’t have to worry about it, my body will take care of it even when I‘m hyperaroused! Last night was the first night in weeks that I had trouble falling asleep, but I was completely fine, I was resting and enjoying my cozy bed and today I had a good day with only a little bit more tiredness than usual. I‘m just going to go day by day and I’m sure I will get out of this speed bump sooner or later. Thank you for teaching the way out of this with so much empathy and great knowledge!

SUPER glad to read this Melanie! Happy I could help! It is so true that sometimes it feels like you need to control every aspect of the problem but when we learn that we all get enough sleep anyway, we can trust our bodies more and let things be :)

The thing i hate the most while having insomnia is the anxiety i feel or the inability to control my brain or my thoughts, when i have been sleepless for days, the anxiety usually gone and i would eventually be able to sleep days afterwards, but when i finally did sleep, i got anxious in the night after, therefore I can't sleep again because of that, it's so hard to act as if i don't really have sleep problem, tonight i finally decide to get up and write this comment after failing to sleep many times just when I'm about to drift away my brain just became active and awake and i got the heart palpitations , it's soo annoying

And also, is it possible for you to make a video about the disease related to insomnia? (fear of illness, death...) In my case, I treat my illness but I am constantly afraid of it.

Hey Alina, great video btw. this question is unrelated to insomnia, but do you have any advice on how to not catastrophize as someone who has anxiety? I understand that anxiety is just there to protect us but even still, how can I minimize the scale of importance about some things? I have a pretty objectively stressful major in college but it seems that I tend to overly stress out about things even more than my fellow peers. I think I just struggle with taking life too seriously maybe? have you ever struggled with this? thank you again for this channel. its such a blessing since insomnia is so isolating.

Hello Alina! Thanks for your video! To pick up on the 2nd question about the brain finding new alarms (again and again) like palpitations, going to the toilet, hyper consciousness, etc. I feel like my brain is doing the same thing to me! He said to me "Be careful, there is your disease", then "be careful, you are going to have big migraines", then "be careful, you are going to have hypoglycemic attacks", then "you are going to faint". I'm full of alerts! And, do I have to fully accept all his alerts? It's really cumbersome because I have an associated debilitating illness... Then, I have another question: I understand that I don't have to make any effort to sleep and I've experienced non-effort, but my brain that wants me to meditate once in bed to initiate sleep, so when I find myself in bed I no longer know what to do to fall asleep... meditate? do nothing? allow me to think? I definitely have a brain that always wants to solve problems! LOL

Hi alina what to do for middle night awakenings after 4 to 5 hours of sleep than cant fall back to sleep
@FearlessSleep
@FearlessSleep 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Raju, I think first step is to admit to yourself that awakening has happened and we can’t force falling back asleep. It is physically impossible to directly affect and initiate the process of falling asleep. That happens only when we don’t feel pressured to sleep, when any our action is not about “getting back to sleep” but about doing something meaningful or something that you feel like doing. And here you are absolutely free to choose :) you can stay in bed if it feels nice, you can watch tv, play video games, drink water, listen to podcasts - use it as time for yourself. Maybe if it makes sense you can even start your day after 4-5 h of sleep. So check internally what feels natural and non-pressuring! Hope this makes sense

Hi alina, I noticed you don t speak about the so called sleep restriction or the sleeping window. Why?
@FearlessSleep
@FearlessSleep 11 ай бұрын
Good question! I think I briefly touched this in the video about Structure vs flexibility: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7GPjbWCp7Dbdps.html In general, I think sleep restriction is just a tool that we can use on the path, just like many other approaches. I've seen some people doing great on sleep window, others didn't but then they found other tools that worked better for them than the restriction. So there is no universal tool that will work for everyone, that's why I don't focus much on techniques but on the general principles how this insomnia paradox works. I believe that once you understand how it works you can choose better your own path. But that's a good topic, I will probably make a video about it once. Thanks for the tip!

I'm sorry to hear that you're going through such a challenging time, especially during your pregnancy. Insomnia can be rough and it's completely understandable that this would bring a lot of distress. First and foremost, please know that you're not alone in this struggle. Many women during pregnancy go through increased anxiety which interferes with their sleep and creates a self-perpetuating pattern. I spoke to those who recovered from insomnia during their pregnancy and of course they had the same concerns. What happens is that we essentially are afraid of our emotions that happen in the connection to wakefulness (fear of fear). Learning that our emotions are safe to experience (even if they are very uncomfortable, they are not our enemies) and starting to change the way we respond to wakefulness is key. It’s a gradual process but it’s possible to get to the place of peace. Creating a supportive environment during this time can assist in this learning, you don’t have to do it alone - e.g. working with a local therapist who can teach to feel safe when the fear comes. For peace of mind it's also okay to get support from the doctor who can help navigate through pregnancy addressing any health concerns you might be having. Additionally, I know of a sleep coach - Brittany, who specializes in prenatal and postpartum insomnia, she also has a support group on Facebook as well as Instagram page. You can find her through her website mamasleepcoach.com.
