Me and Mike continue work on the Onan Generator 15KW

It is a pleasure to listen to a man that has a better education than I have.He should be working for General Electric.The engine sounds a tad bit rich but this may be because the engine is possibly inhaling some it's own exhaust gas.It does not take much for this to happen.I used a fan when running outboards years ago in NJ in a tank of water.
@inoahguy15786 жыл бұрын
Dear kenskip1, Just a quick question, how can you tell that it's running too rich (I'm learning about small engines for home school) Best, IronGAMER36
@kenskip16 жыл бұрын
Iron, It sounds like it is running with the choke on, also a lopy idle. Also may smell coming from the exhaust. You will know it. Possibly some black smoke. (unburned gas) There are a few reasons for this.One is old gas. Old gas is harder to ignite.Weak spark is also a possible cause.To burn the best a blue or white spark should do the trick.A yellow spark is iffy.Hope this helps, Ken

sounds llike that old generator runs pretty good ,, ,I just bought myself a good used generator set as well my portable standby unit won't run the whole house but i just got one that will , i just got it wired into the house today after a week strait of rain it's a 60KW ONAN genset powered by a 4BT cummins diesel ,,,I've set up a 500 gallon fuel tank next to it ,so if the power goes out i have power for at least 10 days ,it'll run for over 250 hours on a full tank of diesel
@805ROADKING6 жыл бұрын
That'll do the job!!☺
@wildcoyote346 жыл бұрын
that was the idea ,, i'm tired of not having enough power ,, i start the generator and even my 15hp air compressor won't dim the lights ,, and it's set so i can run the garage off the generator separate from the house ,but if the power goes out it'll power everything automatically

Awesome guys. I was wondering about that generator. Glad it's going to be fixable. It's kinda funny Road, I spent 7 hours outside today going through my generator. After I finished it up I came in for some YT fun and and what do you have up, a generator video, LOL. I was going through and fixing my 7KW house generator in preparation for the Hurricane coming tomorrow, cause I'm right in the path of it, South East Louisiana. It had a plugged Petcock Fuel valve and a whole lot of gunk, old fuel and rust rolling around in the gas tank. Guess I forgot to drain the tank last time, Gurrr. At least I shut off the petcock and ran the carb dry, so when I got the tank a petcock fixed it fired right up. So I drained it, dropped an old battery clamp in the tank and rolled back and forth, A LOT!. Flushed it out about a hundred times, then swished some Alcohol & clean fuel in it for awhile and drained it. Installed a fuel filter, a charged battery and It fired right up. Still have to clean the tank out some more later after the storm, but it ran it for over an hour so it's good enough for now. Any ideas how to get all the flaking rust out Road? Once it's off the metal it's nice and bright in there. I got about 80-90% of it out. What's left is mostly on the sides and corners. Anyways, Thanks for sharing your Generator project, i'm really looking forward to seeing it. If you get the chance drop some suggestions on the tank please. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

Thanks Keith!! I keep an old peanut butter jar full of square nuts just for cleaning out gas tanks like that!! You can use regular nuts but the square ones are pointier and sharper for a faster and better job!! Then you shake the heck outta it or strap it to a lawn tractor tire and drive it around!!☺

Yeah that circuit board is done. You can see the traces lifting off the board.
@pvc9886 жыл бұрын
If you mean these bumps on the traces, it is normal on some old boards. Nothing wrong there. These are there because there is (uneven) solder coating on the copper. It's there to allow more current to flow, reduce resistance and add some chemical protection.
@travis47986 жыл бұрын
Yes, a few bumps, but all the traces from as far as what I can see are lifting, there's a chance there's a few broken connections there. Especially considering the rust in that box. That or loads of corrosion.

Mike, I have a 15 JC 15KW Onan as well. It has been inside its own shed for last 20+ years. Not sure last time it ran. Changed plugs, filter, checked oil, wires etc. Replaced carb and solenoid valve and regulator. It is setup to launch on propane. Manually connected to cabin for back up to street power. I can get it to fire but now run. Am going to test gas flow tomorrow with digital with a Manometer tomorrow. Any suggestions?

I have the same generator. Use to run fine, but now as soon as i release the start switch the gen shuts off. Diagnosed fuel has good flow, so its no a fuel problem. but its not getting the 12v at the coil. Any idea how the 12v gets to the coil and where should i start lookin. i don't have a schematic of electrical. QUESTION; does the 12v come from the solenoid or from the relay? Any help most appreciated. BB

Would this be good for electronics as far as clean electricity goes? I was told by my electrician not to run computers and electronics while running a generator which is puzzling since most appliances have electronic circuit boards these days. Can Mike touch on my question the next time around? Thanks Kevin
@queenofyeay6 жыл бұрын
Mike might have a different answer but, if you buy a battery back-up for your computer and or electronics you can run just about any halfway decent generator capable of handling the load and not risk damage to your electronics. No sense in worrying about it when you can basically filter the AC for your sensitive electronics before it reaches them.
@keithnoneya6 жыл бұрын
The reason is because the AC power on most home generators are extremely noise for sensitive electronics. It has a lot of noise spikes and it fluctuates up and down a lot depending on the quality of the generator. However most refrigerators have an input filter network to help protect them, where something like a desk top computer or a TV may not be filtered enough to get rid of the noise. Most laptop power supplies will work on noise AC as it is heavily regulated and filtered to give a steady voltage and smooth sine wave power to the internal AC to DC converters, inside that little rat box you plug into the wall and then your Laptop. Usually it's more of a problem with DC to AC Converters, as they don''t actually do a nice Sine Wave but a nice jagged "Modified Sine Wave", which is more of a square wave or a Triangle Wave. Unless you purchase a nice Pure Sine Wave type system or an AC Conditioner, you''ll most likely fry sensitive electronics after using it for a while. Hope this kinda help ya.
@805ROADKING6 жыл бұрын
Hey Kev!! I'll run it past Mike in the next video but it looks like Keith and Toes covered it pretty well!!☺
@1crazynordlander6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I knew he was right but thanks for explaining this.
@1crazynordlander6 жыл бұрын
Thanks but I do not think your run of the mill battery backups do much conditioning unless you get a true line conditioner.
@11122233331116 жыл бұрын
I'd check those old carbon resistors to see if they are in spec, they probably aren't. Then re-grease the regulators, clean the board with alcohol and start looking for bad solder joints and touch them up. all the terminal screws should be replaced and the spades cleaned and tightened. maybe the bearings in the generator itself should be replaced too.

Great new about the regulator, I was just wondering about the size of gas tank you'd need and how to keep it fresh when Mike mentioned about running it on a gas supply. I knew it could be done but have no idea of the modifications needed for the engine, I'll follow the rest of this with interest.
@805ROADKING6 жыл бұрын

I haven't followed this particular project as close as the others, being a newer one, it doesn't strike my fancy as it were, BUT, wouldn't it be simpler to yank every electronic piece in this and to replace them with old-reliable individual units that perform the functions by themselves then tied in to a single system? A regular regulator, an engine starter, engine management stuff, etc. Seems to me like it could be done for under the 100$ target as there are such things already available second hand online. Just my two cents, since this is a long term project anyways.
