Onan RV QG 5500 Watt Fuel Pump DIY Replacement

We recently purchased a 2015 Forest River Georgetown 328TS motorhome. It came equipped with the Onan generator. The electric fuel pump typically fails around 500 hours. This one is pushing 600 hours. I bought the replacement pump ($34.95) and fuel filter ($17.48) on Amazon.

Great video! I started my R.V.s Onan yesterday. It run for awhile then stopped. I did a little trouble shooting and it seems I was getting any fuel to the carb. I thought it might be the fuel filter. I stumbled on your video and now believe it's the fuel pump. Thank you for your video and all the detail, like what tools you need. UPDATE: I always look at more than one video when I'm trying to repair something. So I watch one on trouble shooting an Onan generator. That guy said that if your R.V.s fuel tank went below 1/4 your generator would shut down. I looked and sure enough I was barely below 1/4 tank. Took the R.V. out of storage and filled the tank. Generator started up and ran fine. So like all good troubleshooters should do, check the cheapest easiest thing first.

Great video. Bought the exact same coach, now in the desert and it's hot. Tried replacing fuel filter, gotten watery gas from love's. Fuel additive still cutting off. Now to replace pump. Thank you for the simple video explaining it to this non- mechanical girl!!

Had the same problem , did replace the filtre and pump with Amazon Parts , I installed the pump out of it s original location with air all arround it ( in fact it s installed out of gen frame) been running for 4 years now

Nice video. Thanks boosted my confidence about replacing the fuel pump. Unfortunately, the fuel pump is not available from Amazon as of this writing and they are not able to say whether it will be available or not. I am currently attempting to track down a replacement for Onan 149-2820 fuel pump which may or may not be replaceable with the one listed here.

At minute 1:58, I did a detailed view showing the two bolts that needed to be removed. Other than disconnecting the fuel line, that’s all that was involved in removing the old pump. Hope that helps.

Have a 2014 Georgetown XL with almost 500 hrs. on the generator. Ordered pump and filter on Amazon. My suspicions are that is my problem. If not it won't hurt to replace them. Will be here Wednesday. But what is this about the breaker switches? I never turned them off before. Would you please enlighten me on this? Great how to video. Kudos to you.

Sorry for the delayed response. For whatever reason, YT doesn't notify me when a comment is posted. The breakers are on my generator. If I'm plugged into shore power, and start the generator, it usually trips one or both breakers on the generator quicker than the the transfer switch can respond. So to avoid having to unplug the the coach while at home, I simply flip the breakers off. If I need to put a load on the generator, then I will disconnect shore power. Hope that clears it up.

Have you considered plumbing in a pass through backup pump? On my old 83 Ranger I plumbed one in after getting stuck 18 miles from the nearest road. It would run my truck up to about 2200 rpm before the aux pump wouldn't deliver enough fuel but it was enough to limp it back to civilization twice

Since a new pump is only $34, and very easy to replace, I'll just carry a spare. It took the two previous owners of this coach 3 years to rack up this many hours.
