I have been having trouble with keeping my Onan Microquiet 4000 running and after changing the oil and the air filter decided to give changing the fuel filter and while I was at it, pump a try. I followed this video. It was a perfect instructional video, giving tips along the way and spoke to me in practical, meaningful ways. It was a success. My generator is now purring along. Thank you.

I am a 62 years young, ex-pat now living in Nova Scotia, Canada who took on this challenge after spending $800 + for a company to service the generator. They fixed a ground wire and explained the Gen ran perfectly using an independent fuel source. Their advice, get a gas container or use the MH as a glorified tent. 🤨 New fuel pump and filter cost less than $100 cdn, plus my time! I thank you so much for giving me the confidence to replace the old fuel pump and filter. She now works just fine, I am so proud of my achievement. Thanks again😃

Sitting here in my home office in Florida, watching these excellent Richie How-To's this morning. I'd already watched the video on dropping the entire generator and replacing the starter. I'll be doing that i decided, then I watched this video. I figure while I'm at it, i might as well as replace the fuel pump and filter too. I've got 600 hours on the generator and i doubt it's ever been replaced. (bought the RV recently, used). So why not? Thanks Richie. Great work.

Excellent write up. I will add, at 8:40 take the plug that you removed from the fuel pump and use it as a cap on the barbed end of the fuel filter to keep debris from entering the filter before you put the fuel line back on.

update: Yes, this is an awesome video that shows you step by step what to do. I tried it today and let me tell you it is definitely not as easy as it looks in this video. He just puts in his screw driver and off comes the part he targets.. Well, I spent several hours today trying to get each screw off of each piece I needed to take off. Every single nut or screw that needed to come out was a fight. Had to to go the store several times to adjust what I was using. The selenoid screw did not just come off using the half inch wrench. I had to go get a socket wrench. The they weren't long enough so had to go back to the store to get the long sockets. I also had to use penetrating oil to help loosen the screws. Finally after getting everything out except the actual fuel pump, I have one last screw that holds the pump down that I absolutely can not get loose. So I"m taking it in to an RV shop to see if someone there can at least help get that screw out. I'm hoping it's not stripped. Just know while this video makes it looks almost easy and do able for us non-mechanic types, it is anything but easy. I'm hoping tomorrow will be a better day and someone can get the screw out that holds down the fuel pump. If not, I'll have to pay the big bucks and keep my appt. at the generator shop at $210/hr. Thanks for the great video!

I had the exact same experience with my Onan 4000 MicroQuiet Tina. It was the bolt holding the solenoid to the mounting plate that gave me the most trouble. On many of the bolts the heads just sheared off and I had to drill them out. I think that solenoid bolt might have been made of Kryptonite, nothing I seemed to do worked. I can't tell you how many drill bits I broke!!!! I finally had to go buy a Extreme Metal cutting blade for my oscillating saw to cut the nut side of the bolt free. But it finally came free. So don't give up hope. You can do it!!!!

Your video helped me with an unexpected issue repair. The fuel pump wasn’t working so I expected it to need to be replaced however I went in thinking the possibility that the ground had come loose. As it turns out, I was wrong but on the right track. The POWER supply wire o the pump had corroded and disconnected. We use our 2020 Leprechaun to travel year round up in Alaska and through Canada and it leaves the camper exposed to lots of unexpected corrosion. Anyway, that for making the video.

This is how I fixed mine. In the case of: "I CAN'T START MY GENERATOR" It's has been two years since last time it was running, so I started by checking oil level full at gen (it won't start if low oil becouse of sensores), gasoline more than 1\4 tank in my RV (also safety censors), sparkplug checked for good spark, check the manual circuit braker (ON) at front RV engine compartment for current, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, then checked wires and found some has been chewed by rats so I replaced them, by this time it started but stay runing only by keep pushing the switch on all the time, so I knew it was electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage, ( I did this by myself with some tools and old tricks) it's really heavy for one person. I disassemble the unit at my garage and started by removing the cover, then the cooling fan or flywheel unit (it's 2 items in one unit) until finally I was at the gen rotor and brushes assembly area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by filthy rats plus the stinky rat nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the commutator copper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats. Then I assembled everything back together and bingo it's runing like a champion. For this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller (available at any auto parts for $25.00) to pull the aluminum fan out and (flywheel). Just picture this: (Eny engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) so following this important principle you'll always find the problem to be fixed. Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover becouse you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one or two members...just kidding. After testing the gen then put the air cooling assembly back and the rest of components including the cover and done!!! If this can help eaven one person save time and $$$ it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!!!

Hi Kevin. Yes if you only wish to change to the filter just remove the oval rubber grommet and the filter will unscrew. Honestly I have never tried to change the pump by removing the air filter housing, problems i foresee would be the earth cable and the live wire are located under the ECU so unless you cut them and rejoin its probably easier to remove the ECU. Hope this helps Thanks Richie

Thank you for the step by step explanation. I get fuel into my 4000 when I use a gal jerry can right below it but when it's connected to the Ford 450 fuel tank it is starved - no fuel getting to the carb. So I assume it's either the fuel line has a crack or the pump is too weak to pull it from the vehicle tank but not too weak to pull it from a can foot away. Does that ever happen? To test the line I used a small bulb syphon and successfully sucked fuel through it but it ran for about 1 min then it stopped and sounded like it was starved again. So I'm going with the pump replacement fix rather than a new fuel line. Am I overlooking anything? Does this make sense?
@rvknowhow
@rvknowhow Жыл бұрын
Thanks for comment Steve. Yes I would think the fuel pump is weak if you can get fuel down the line without the pump. Probably a good idea to do the filter at the same time as they are attached together.

Saw your instructions on replacing the fuel pump and filter and decided to do that! Thank you so much! I have a concern though. The fuel line going into the filter is rock hard. It doesn’t flex. I replaced the filter and the fuel pump on my Onan 4000 generator couple weeks ago. Fuel tank on my motorhome was below a quarter so I used a 1-gallon jug of gas at the intake to the fuel filter to check and make sure everything was running. It ran great! Today I went and filled up the gas tank on my motorhome. There is no fuel being drawn from the tank to the engine now. I checked all of the fuel line from the engine back to the gas tank. Is there a quicker way than trying to start the engine with an empty gas line in order to get gas to the generator?

@@rvknowhow Understood. We use ours all winter in Alaska and the road crud eats up all of the connections. We’re having issues with our fuel pump so I’m going to first check that ground wire to make sure that hasn’t corroded off. The wires to the heating pads and solar panels had corroded completely off so that’s the most logical step.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Brand new RV (1 year old) and after a winter the gennie would start but would not stay on long. Figured it was a bad pump. I got the pump installed and thought I connected everything correctly but now the generator has no power. No priming, crank, zero power. I tested with a multi-meter that 12v if getting to the solenoid. Thinking maybe I have a ground issue. I took off the ground wire and sanded them down for good contact. Any idea what May be wrong and anything I can try or test next? Breaker on the generator is towards the outside. Possible that the solenoid is bad. It’s a brand new RV. Sorry for the long winded comment but looking for any help. Thanks

Hi Vincent, Sorry to hear of your troubles. My first guess would be the solenoid, You mention that you have a good ground and there is 12v to the solenoid but you need to check that 12v is coming from the other side of the solenoid when cranking, check that first and let me know. Thanks Richie

@@rvknowhow thanks Richie. Not getting 12v on the starter side when cranking. I’m going to change out the solenoid and try that next.

Hi Richie, changed the solenoid and no luck. It look like I’m getting 6.7 or so volts on the solenoid on the starter side but still no start/crank, nothing. Tried to jump from the battery directly to the starter side of the solenoid. Guessing I either have a wiring or ground issue or the starter is bad. Brand new RV with 20 hrs on it. I think i need to bring to an expert at this point unless you have any other advice of simple things to try next.

Should the fuel pump ever make a knocking sound? Mine does when I first hit the prime button.

The pump might make a knocking sound while it is building fuel pressure.

Update #2 Well, I was able to get it all set up and installed. It does work. But now for some reason, my electrical is not working with the generator running. Any idea what is causing that?
@rvknowhow

Hi Tina, I'm happy to hear you got the problems sorted in the end. Yes having access to the correct tools is helpful. If you have no power i would suggest it is probably the breaker on the generator has tripped and needs setting. I will send you a 2 minute video link to see if that works for you,

Replaced fuel pump and two six volt house batteries on on an 7000 series. All appliances work when generator or outside power is supplied. When these two sources are removed there is no12 volt in house power. Control Panel shows no indication of power. Can you help me?
@rvknowhow
@rvknowhow 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear of your problems, the first thing i would check is to make sure the batteries are wired in series so they are producing 12v. If they are wired parallel they will still be 6v.

Thanks for the comment, I haven't put a link in the description due to link expiring. I don't use the OEM parts for the pump and filter, not worth the extra cost in my opinion (other people may feel different of course) I usually buy from eBay or Amazon. Let me share my past purchase with you and see if it is still active

Hi, yes I can, because I change them both every 100 hours I just replace them with aftermarket new parts, typically you can find these on ebay shops or amazon. The fuel pump is as follows. Fuel Pump for Onan 4000 RV Generator 4KW Microlite Quiet Cummins 12V E11007 CA. The filter is as follows. Cummins Onan 149-2457, Generator Fuel Filter. And the sealer is from any good auto parts store. make sure its fuel resistant

Hello, Assuming the battery is connected correctly the first thing to check would be the 12 volt supply to the solenoid, thats the thick red cable coming in?
