"Once Upon A Time In The West" was released on Dire Straits second album, Communiqué, in June 1979. I have been a huge fan of this album since it was released, it's easily my favorite Dire Straits album, and I love them all. This song is one of the best. Play this one loud, because you've never heard it sound anywhere as good as the new MFSL hybrid SACD! Trust me here! ;-)
and....PLEASE like, comment n share it...or it'll get buried very quickly!?
The film is a stone cold masterpiece and if asked, it's often the one I list as my favorite of all-time. It is cinematic perfection....I've seen it probably over 100 times and I'm enthralled by every minute of it every time.
This is an update for one of my very first videos...the old, off pitch, uneven volume levels, and low bitrate .mp3 have been replaced here with a flac audio track sourced from the brand new Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs SACD. This various digital releases of this album have never approached how this record sounded on vinyl...until now. *From MFSL: Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity's numbered-edition hybrid SACD of Communiqué elevates Dire Straits' sophomore album to an even higher plane. Reference-Level Detail, Depth, Soundstaging, Balance, and Presence: Communiqué Has Never Sounded Better.
What you hear on KZfaq (which will be very good!) will only be an approximation of what these CD's sound like fully uncompressed....STUNNING!
So this is a video I've been both anxious to make and also kind of dreading at the same time. It's always been one of my greatest KZfaq frustrations that my single most popular video (this one video accounts for over a sixth of the views I get on over 550 videos!) was one of the very first I ever made and it's always been just painful to watch (for me....thrilled that lots of folks enjoyed it!). I didn't think the video would get many views or be around long and I was really just experimenting as I learned keyframes, masks, layers, etc. So of course it needed an upgrade, I couldn't ever decide if I wanted to do a total update of the concept from the original, or mostly edit the film itself. I knew Leone's film would be more than I could probably handle editing into a 5 1/2 minute song (I actually considered using just the opening at the station to make the entire video! Not a bad idea actually! LOL!). I couldn't resist the temptation for more scenes, and in the end the editing doesn't make much sense, it's not in sequence, etc. just a random bunch of clips from a movie that it is too epic, and too perfect to be edited. Forgive me Sergio! ;-)
Besides the sketchy video used in the original, there is the issue of the audio, which is much more serious since it affects the music itself. Yikes! I've always felt a bit ashamed for having so many people hear the song with the audio as it was presented in the old video. First, the pitch was incorrect, and also there were several volume changes that occurred because I didn't really understand how to combine sound from individual clips with audio track. Only a handful of people ever commented on it, but it was pretty noticeable. Add to that the source was already a pretty shrill lower bitrate .mp3. So video bad, audio really bad! ;-)
I ended up finishing the update really quickly....and there were so many little odd and interesting things/effects that I occasionally chased....but again, you only got 5 1/2 minutes and you got Sergio Leone's "Once Upon A Time In The West"! And while I know the video could maybe have been worked to better effect.....the audio is absolutely the best this song has ever sounded.
The album produced the single "Lady Writer", which reached #45 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #51 on the UK Singles Chart. The album reached #1 on album charts in Germany, New Zealand, and Sweden, #11 in the United States and #5 in the United Kingdom. Communiqué was later certified gold in the United States, platinum in the United Kingdom and double-platinum in France.
I hope you enjoy the thing! Thanks for watching.
[Lyrics]
Some people get a cheap laugh breaking up the speed limit
Scaring the pedestrians for minute
Crossing up progress driving on the grass
Leaving just enough room to pass
Sunday driver never took a test
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west
Yes it's no use saying that you don't know nothing
It's still gonna get you if you don't do something
Sitting on a fence that's a dangerous course
Ah, you could even catch a bullet from the peace-keeping force
Even the hero gets a bullet in the chest
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west
Mother Mary your children are slaughtered
Some of you mothers ought to lock up your daughter
Who's protecting the innocenti
Heap big trouble in the land of plenty
Tell me how we're gonna do what's best
You guess once upon a time in the west
Oh yeah once upon a time in the west
Oh yeah once upon a time in the west
Oh yeah once upon a time in the west
Once upon a time in the west

I do too. It makes me crazy that I know a couple of different friends who are huge movie fans and who both otherwise have great taste, but they've both told me a variation of they think it's boring and can never finish it. I know for me and many others it's mesmerizing and hypnotizing....and one of those where if I watch the first 5 minutes I'm there until the end! :-) Thanks for checking it and commenting!

My favorite western, without doubt. I may have seen it as often as you have. I so wish Sergio could have lived to complete "Stalingrad." Get this: to the Soviets, the battle of Stalingrad is like their Gettysburg. On the merest pitch, the USSR pledged $100 million and free use of their old arms gear to do it right!

Sweet update of your earlier video, but YT still compresses it so much. But well done, mate, well done. That one is still one of my favourite of your edits. The great music and great inspiration from the great film, also while Leone was inspired by the greatest - Kurosawa. Then music by Morricone, music by Knopfler. It's all interconnected, if you dig. I can talk about it for days, but oh well. Keep it up, mate.

Yes, the influences and connections are thick here! There are still people on the original video I made all mixed up with Morricone, Knopfler...the song and the film! LOL! I do love the work of all these artists very much, but Leone was a one of kind director and Morricone was a one of a kind composer....two for the ages....with Knopfler only slightly behind in stature and influence.

The update is of course fantastic Jon, but i went back and watched your original video, and (as usual lol) i think that you're being way too hard on yourself! The original has so many views because you did a fantastic job marrying two all time classics! Btw, in regard to OUATITW possibly being your favorite movie, it's also in my top 5. Number 1? Once Upon a Time in America :)
@MetalGuruMessiah

Yeah, I know I know I pay way more attention to the video/audio than everyone watching them LOL! Mainly laying resentment for such a simple/clunky video that gets hundreds of thousands of views a year, when things I've made that are much more special are lucky to get a few thousand in a year. ;-( And seriously? Once Upon A Time In America being your favorite...!..that is one of my top five as well, and sometimes I'll call it THE favorite...then you and I must share some DNA or have known each other in a previous existence! Needless to say, let me compliment you on your absolutely impeccable taste in movies! ;-) ;-) ;-) I watched it maybe 2 months ago....and I can talk about it forever....what stuck with me last time was that it's so sloooooooooow, but it's that glacial pace that somehow draws you in (at least those with the patience) and when it ends you always think "what a fn epic"! Speaking of Leone; when I was editing footage from OUATITW, I realized that with one of his films, you can literally nearly double the speed....and the movements of people and things still seem almost normal!!! I'n my experience with other clips, that speed makes everything look animated and silly.....but not with Leone! LOL!

@@MetalGuruMessiah Fascinating observation about doubling the speed. I think i'd give that movie a watch lol So not to go too movie nerd on you, but i finally picked up the extended director's cut for America. It's 251 minutes of Leone/Morricone awesomeness. The extra 22 minutes added to the '89 (I think) original director's cut is not filler, and includes a previously totally cut out Louise Fletcher, in a very cool scene. Supposedly Leone filmed 10 hours of movie, but the rest is likely lost. It's probably crazy to pick a favorite scene, but the one that gets me every time is, Deniro in the phone booth calling Fat Moe, and then the reunion in the diner, as Morricone's score begins to swell......... I think i need to fire up the bluray lol Great job again on the update! Your hard work, and passion is appreciated Jon!!

the update is far better imho, but I don't want to sound evil, because art is subjective and success is 'Amadeus.' Do I dare say this :) For instance in one part of the vid you crank up the actions of Walking and then later use a version of speeding up the image when at the Hanging scene later. To me the 1st image didn't work and kind of looked carnival like and I thought that was bad news... but the 2nd time you cranked up the speed with the Hanging I thought WOW it works perfectly and the images flickering were married to the song (music,) and that was good :) I hope this doesn't sound petty, but it's art and I as a artist (?) regardless of chaos or perfect matching think when art is done well reduces the feeling of time and is replaced with an awe of emotion much like Deer frozen by the Light of a passing car. Art at it's best suspends time by the intellectual emotion which opens like doors to take the person or audience & connect them to a place elevated like a missing piece of puzzle humans need to grow and be whole. Of course everyone one loving your work doesn't make you the best artist or having very few who can tolerate your work make it bad; which was why I said art is subjective and success is 'Amadeus.' ' what was bad once is good - what was good once is now bad' and that's why Artist are screwed up, we don't know but we pretend we do. Enjoyed _ Thanks.

I liked your Deep Purple/Metropolis video very much...a great (and unusual) song selection for the video sequences (which I've experimented with as well). I would have syncopated the beginning of the bone flute playing with the beginning of the keyboard solo because I think that would have really syncopated the music and film in a nice way, but yes....art is neither right or wrong, good or bad, it's nothing if not subjective. I've done things that are more in the style of your video, such as this one kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a71ghJmhrpu1cXU.html ....each video has to find it's own way, some are more resistive to visual syncopation than others. Thanks for visiting....keep up the great work with your vids!
