- The Ondophone - the dream of a sound that never was... At least for now, there might be a future where the Ondophone will come to real life. In this weeks episode we are taking a closer look at the first Ondophone prototype, an amazing prototype that served its purpose perfectly by pointing out the flaws in the concept. Such is the era of 21st century music: new instruments are being made by ingenious inventors/composers willing to step out of the box and put their creations to use. The ondophone and the modulin will be -- as a result -- examples of this development.

The difficult thing about art, when you’re very creative, is calling the thing finished. There’s so much joy in creating. The starting can be tricky, so when you’re flowing, you resist the finishing, because that means, at some point, starting again. And there will be, at some point you know, a little mourning period for the project you’ve finished. When the flowing tap is turned on again, that’s ok, but that flow can cease and we don’t know why. You have to accept that state; you can’t always manipulate it back. It’s worrying and humbling. Maybe that’s the lesson. Putting the thing aside is a good strategy. When you return to it, the solutions present themselves. A good coping tool is time spent solo exploring in a forest.🌳

I think all he has to do to see it from the perspective of the audience here, is to rename it. The Ondophone, would probably have to be much more complex, to do what Martin had in his mind. This instrument is good as it is, though the prototype might be a bit too rough around the edges, but the community, perhaps with a bit of Martins involvement could probably turn it in to soemthing that doesn't look DIY.

Well so far, it's a combination of a slide, ebow, and using a pencil as a trill (like the guitar triller) the ebow has a magnet, magnets takeaway from sustain, active guitar pickups have weaker magnets with a preamp to boost to sound, in order to give more sustain. I like how people who don't play instruments think this idea is finished, he didn't write something, he was just playing with it.

Please don’t ditch the ondophone, Martin... I don’t know what you were expecting from the sound seeing as it was a really far fetched combination between two really weird and different instruments, but I must say I really do hear the lonely prairie wolf ik space. It just seems so sad to abandon it like that... Carlos was also really enthusiastic about is and it being a new instrument. You’re not feature creeping with this and I don’t see the giant flaws with it. If you have the time and courage I think you should try and make a definitive version of this, having tweaked the sound and flaws. You deserve to have the dreams Martin from a year ago had

Ebow really should be played slightly away from the pickup, not directly over the top, it will be super shrill directly over the top of the pickup. Also if the pickup is too shrill consider the magnet type you are using in the pickup itself, different magnets will have very different tonal characteristics and it is a very quick and simple procedure to tailor the pickup to what it is you need it to do for you exactly. Ideally you would add a tone and volume control to the pickup so you have some sort of control over it, currently that pickup is running full juice straight to the jack, not great for tone. Also a brass saddle and brass nut will tame some high end.

I think what you have at the moment is more of a fret-less marxophone. The way the the ondes martenot works is with electronic oscillators very similar to a frequency modulation synthesizer. To reproduce that kind of sound using strings will be very hard. I think that pick-up placement and area where you induce vibration to the string will be very important like when you pluck closer to the neck on a guitar vs bridge. It would be like finding a way to hit the sweet spot like you did with the vibraphone and being able to move it note you are trying to play.
@TheJonHolstein
@TheJonHolstein 4 жыл бұрын
The Ondes Martenot is also a two hand instrument. But they came up with something cool here, that could be developed in to a instrument of its own, even if it isn't the Ondophone. If he renames this, he might be able to let go of his expectations, and see the potential of it. His ondophone can be a later project. I would also love to see him take on a large concept of hammer-string instrument. The concept of magnets used here, is really clever, and could be useful for other types os string based instruments.
