08:11 Password Management
09:56 What will I use, then?
First, Epiphany looks RIGHT. If you're using a GTK desktop, or even a Plasma desktop with a correct GTK theme set, it looks really nice.
Second, Epiphany just so happens to share Safari's rendering engine, and generally, when I identify a bug on Epiphany, it's also going to happen on Safari, so it's a nice way to debug for what my previous boss uses.
Third, Epiphany syncs with my Firefox account.
Fourth, EPiphany, on a laptop, has 2 finger swieps to go back and forward, which is an amazing way to navigate using a touchpad, and *why are other browsers not doing it, seriously.*
And, finally, Epiphany doesn't come with an overload of features.
First, the website compatibility: Epiphany has issues on that front. It might use Safari's rendering engine, but it's surprisingly less capable. Here are a few examples I happened upon:
Epiphany triggers A LOT of "are you a bot" dialogs. In the startpage search engine, especially, I get blocked all the time, because it seems to think I'm making suspiscious requests.
On top of that, EPiphany is heavier than Firefox, that I used before.
Next issue, the video playback. KZfaq on Epihany is basically a 50/50 thing. You can play any video you want, provided you're playing it from the start. If you're trying to resume a video you've watched but not finished? Won't work. If you're trying to move forwards in a video? Nope, doesn't work. If you try to go back to the beginning, it might resume playback, but not always.
This is probably the WORST problem I have with Epiphany, and keep in mind it happens both on my laptop and my dsktop, both with beefy CPUS, and with mesa drivers or with nvidia proprietary drivers.
The sync with Firefox isn't super reliable. I often get an issue telling me the sync secret is invalid, and realize nothing has been synced for a while. But that's manageable, I just re-login to the Firefox account, and sync starts again. Not perfect, but it's OK.
No, the real issue is taht Epiphany doesn't really fill login forms on a lot of websites. On my accounting software, it doesn't fill either of the fields, login, or password. On the website I work as a freelance product owner, it doesn't auto fill either, and while it offers a list of logins, selecting them with the mouse doesn't work, using the arrow keys doesn't select them in the right order, and doesn't have any visual feedback, and it won't fill the password field.

"Portmaster". Offtopic, I know, but what a badly chosen name, sorry that I need to say it. Because it's totally duplicate, since a completely different thing in with that same name exists, namely for FreeBSD. The developers should have verified that in my opinion. And I am not even mentioning that some people today are offended by the word "master", so that's already a reason not to chose that name for new stuff

@BoulderBro999 why? suck on that? Super helpful input. For people that need to get work done, and in a web browser, Gnome Web is simply not good enough. It has nothing to do with the size of the team, or not being grateful for free software. Web is not bad, but it’s absolutely not something I could use, for example, for school. Or work. This is the reality of the situation, and why so many Linux users use it to download Chrome or Firefox.

Well... At least it looks clean. Also I think we need to hire famous influencers so that developers actually fix these issues rather than being offended for pointing out a bug. As I said, the power of famous influencers is just amazing. Fix the bugs, KDE finally going a bit more minimalist and noob friendly ( supposedly ). LTT just set many things on fire. I wonder if he used Chrome in Linux. Because Chromium scrolling sensitivity is so bad in Linux, with mouse wheels that almost everyone use Firefox. So bad that there is a dedicated extension named "Linux Scroll Speed Fix".

It would probably be more worthwhile for GNOME to ditch Epiphany as it is and change the browser to be a reskin of Firefox. Just ditch Firefox's current UI and change it to a GTK 4 based one. I'm a web developer. I disagree with the statement at 5:31 that it's not the browser's fault but the web developer's fault. Back in the early 2000, Internet Explorer was notorious for not following W3C standards. Microsoft decided to create their own pseudo-standards, and because IE6 had 95% market share, web developers did indeed only optimize their websites for IE6. This however is no longer the case. We don't optimize websites for Chrome or Firefox. Web developers nowadays follow W3C standards, and if the browser implements that correctly, then there is no issue.
@Hobbitstomper
@Hobbitstomper 2 жыл бұрын
Also keep in mind, just because a browser like GNOME Web uses WebKit doesn't mean it works as wel as Safari. Browser developers can always make changes on how certain HTML, CSS or JavaScript should be interpreted. As you experienced it yourself, with GNOME Web on Linux, it's a nightmare and many websites don't work, yet with Safari on MacOS which uses the same render engine, all the websites you tested, work fine.
@TheLinuxEXP
@TheLinuxEXP 2 жыл бұрын
As someone who worked in web development and has done so for 10 years I can safely say that while devs don't optimize specifically for Chrome, they also never test for anything else. Chrome isn't 100% compliant. No browser is, AFAIK. But only testing for Blink led to this.
@Hobbitstomper
@Hobbitstomper 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheLinuxEXP Actually no, because as I said, Safari works perfectly well with all the websites you have issues with, yet both use WebKit. That fact alone puts your theory to rest that the issue is engine based and/or web developer issues. It's an issue with GNOME Web. Bugs and lacks of feature implementation. Also, I hardly know any web developers that exclusively test with Chrome. Especially professional companies have entire test suits set up. All the companies I worked for, we always run tests with Chrome, Firefox, Safari (if available on the OS), across PC, Mac, Android phones and iPhones. I started as a web developer in 2001, that's when IE6 dominated and we only tested and optimized for IE6. This mentality is long gone, to only focus on specific browsers.

@@TheLinuxEXP OMG! That's amazing! Can't wait to watch it since Gnome is my favorite DE. Just a suggestion, definitely do try using it with no extensions or at least extensions that don't change anything about the workflow, you will be surprised at how minimal yet useful it can be. Although I have a feeling you are going to like it anyway since it doesn't have those murderers, the desktop icons:)

Haha. I had the same thoughts at your first video, that it's gonna be a hard time for you. But: I can not reproduce the issues you had with my Manjaro Gnome41 Web/Epiphany. At least KZfaq works as it should. I really love the UI of web. But it's lacking so many features. A bookmarks bar on a new tab is one big issue for me. Addons for more security besides a built in adblock are essential for me: ClearURLs, HTTPS Everywhere, Skip Redirect, Smart Referer and uBlock with Script Block (not just ads)...

5:30 sometimes it is. I'm a web developer, and I was trying to make a desktop app with NeutralinoJS(which uses webkitGTK, same as epiphany). Using the normal (and basically only) way to play audio (WebAudio or HTML5, neither worked) it had a delay when playing or pausing audio. A big delay. I thought it was my code but I tried using electron (which uses chromium) and worked flawlessly. Then I took it to a web server and any browser worked well except for epiphany (and other webkitgtk browsers)

All of the webkit browsers have potential but the main issue is the engine itself. It's so behind at this point that any browser using it isn't viable for daily use. I hope it gets better in the future but until then firefox or anything firefox based is the only viable alternatives to blink and it's terrifying.

I have now tried it on new Arch installation with GNOME 42 on it, because your video made me curious. Well I can say that it's BAD indeed. :D I have tried it both with GNOME on Wayland and on Xorg. On Wayland a video simply never starts, while on Xorg the the browser still responds extremely bad, but a video sorta plays. I am using NVIDIA, still with an older videocard, but the rest of my system is very new and powerful. The whole experience with GNOME itself is a roller coaster experience. First of all I needed to manually tweak UDEV rules to get Wayland working because by default GDM didn't give me the option (while starting in wayland mode from th TTY did work so I knew it had to be possible). Second, I have a 4k display on which I need exactly 150% scaling. Fractional scaling out of the box is always blurry, so I never do that, I always play with DPI instead to get a sharp experience (even though they never recommend you). (100% scaling is really to small while 200% scaling is monstrously big) A lot of messing with settings and environment variables eventually gives me the scaling result that I want. But in gnome's case the end result is still somewhat bad, because fonts are the only thing that I get bigger this whay while the windows and icons are not growing with it. Xfce and KDE do a much better job with it (still problematic though, with also a lot of try-error and research time needed to get things right, but the end result is eventually very good, because DPI scaling causes non-font things to get bigger as well in the case of KDE while in the case of Xfce i can configure multiple things myself to make them larger so that the problem is solved).

After seeing your video a month ago I gave GNOME Web a try. The trial lasted two days, if I recall. I was immediately put off by its poor importing of bookmarks and how limited the bookmark management was. Then it would not play live stream videos. So "sudo apt remove epiphany" it went. Thanks for your channel, which I quite enjoy.

I have been using Brave for a while, and because of your last video I decided to try out another browser. I decided to try out Vivaldi (need Chromium based so I can swap profiles for work and personal) and it was the little things that pissed me off. Closing and reopening did not re open all of my tabs, and if I did it from history it would then double my pinned tabs and I would have to close them. The taskbar icon would not stay pinned by profile (it would work, but open another window). Honestly, if Firefox had easily switchable profiles out of the box, I would hands down be using it as a daily driver (love container tabs) but it doesnt look like it ever will.

Hey Nick, I have been using Epiphany Technology Preview, which is in alpha.43 and all those problems are fixed. How about taking another look. I am running it on Gnome 42.3. How about talking about how helpful it is to save a web site as an app, or that extension support wors. So many posititives for this upcoming minimalist star. Once a browser gets out of my way, I am happy, and that's GNOME Web / Epiphany.

Have you tried the nightly version. The new versions of epiphany seem to have some improvements. And if there are problems with page rendering i think that's not the fault of epiphany but webkit-gtk. Does anyone know of any way to get KZfaq videos working on Gnome Web? I literally can't even get them to START playing anymore. Other than this MAJOR issue, this is my perfect browser. It's the only Linux browser (that I'm aware of) that supports basic gestures like pinch to zoom and Swipe left / right with two fingers to back and forward, which is essential to me. It even has the "peak back" functionality that Safari has when you do a half swipe back, so you can quickly glance at something from the previous page without actually going back and reloading the page, which is a feature I LOVE and use all the time on my MacBook. The lack of a browser I like is one of the last big hurdles in the way of me switching to a Linux distribution as my main and sole OS , and Gnome Web is SOO close, but I need to be able to watch KZfaq. It's so frustrating.

Hey, just thought I'd point out that there is a way to disable Pocket in Firefox. I also don't use it and even consider it "bloatware" to some extent, but after realizing that Firefox is really the only viable option that I'm willing to use on a daily basis, I wanted to find some way to get rid of it. Unfortunately, it is slightly fiddly, but you can remove most of the Pocket integration by going to about:config and changing extensions.pocket.enabled to false. The only thing leftover is the "Recommended by Pocket" section on the New Tab page, which can easily be disabled in the preferences.

As I understand it, the User-Agent in epiphany is empty and that lets you ran into issues with website compatibility. There is a way to set the user agent to Mozilla or Chromium and this should improve browsing experience a lot. I remember the opera 12 and before times, so many website said no, not compatible, but when you set the user agent to IE, all just worked fine.
