I welded pipe for 42 years .Today I noticed some of my hoods hanging on the wall in another building. They are doing fine right where they are.I used a number 9 welding lens for twenty of those years unless I was using a rod bigger than 5/32 which was rare.At 64 I can still see fine.Keep your head out of that smoke as much as possible. Those pancake hoods were invented by 798s so they didn't have to grind any. They are uncomfortable and useless.A fliptop hood is far better and safer. You young guys don't lay your hood down face first to collect metal flakes like a funnel lay it facing up when you lay it down.Throw your spent rods into a bucket or container instead of hap hazardly on the floor or ground.Be careful with argon once it gets in your lungs its hard to get out.Be careful in a confined space with oxygen, its odorless and if it saturates your clothing you will burst into flames.

That older SA 200 is the cadillac of welding machines!Just listen to that Lincoln Continental engine. Many welders[myself included]believe it produces the best arc out there.I used to have one myself. The countries infrastructure was built with that and the red rod 6010.[not 5p plus].The only drawback is it[the SA200 ] produces DC current for the auxiliary power source. It will quickly burn up drill motors or space heaters and such.]Grinder motors are made to accept DC or AC .At least they used to be.The 5p plus has more flux to fight when you are going downhill. Therefore you have to hold a slightly longer arc.The old 5P[6010]red rod went downhill very easily.Red rod may be hard to find these days.Good video!

Re: Looking to become a pipe welder A lot shop fab is mig welded, like meter skids, seperators parts of vessels. If you want to travel and weld you need to find a helper job somewhere you want to go and learn the downhill stick side or get into chemical and water plants where everything is tig welded or try em all out. Getting a helper job for a year or 2 is going to be more useful than most schooling plus you'll take home 1500$ a week for the right company. Save, learn, practice in your spare time. When your comfortable go find a test

Using 5/32" rod for procedure what works good for me 3/32"(2mm) land 3/32"(2mm)space . Body position is very important when downhanding. Coming down the side dip your stinger hand shoulder down (twist shoulders and bend at the hips ) . There is a saying too weld the weld not the pipe ( don't burn the top of the bevel off and just catch the bevel caping)

I commend you for teaching the pipeline process. You should do some videos on things people don’t see often. like welding split T for hot tap, how to transition for different pipe thicknesses, hot line sleeve test. There are a million things I know. One thing I never see or hear about anymore is an actual hot cut (football) where you cut live, pack drilling mud, and blow down. I have done several not sure if it is used anymore. It would be nice to see somebody demonstrating how it works and why it’s done. May not be able to demonstrate but maybe explain the process. Thanks for taking your time to teach the lost art.

OK, we know you can weld SCH 40 and thicker. The reality is that 50% of pipeline is relatively low pressure rated 0.100 - 0.150" wall jacketted pipe for buried gathering lines. Welding thin stuff can be less forgiving than thicker wall. I've been on projects that have 100 or more joints on thin wall buried pipe and maybe 30 connections on SCH 40 for above ground piping.

When I was in school for pipe welding we did downhill 1/8 6010 5p all the way out on 6inch pipe. I had great roots and great caps. Went to take a pipe test for a company and they had a miller bobcat rental for the testers. Had my fit up same as usual (3/32 gap & land) and ran my root and pushed all the way through. Yet my root was terrible and had low spots. I don’t understand what I had done wrong. Had the settings right too.
