FINALLY. Thank you so much for your patience. I hope you enjoy this one, I felt extremely passionate about the chosen topic and I hope it shows! I'll be dropping an update video after this one where I'll talk about future plans, including Lost Odyssey Part 2, that I touch on slightly in the video. So expect this at some point in May! (Also, 28:41, I meant Rain Dinner's was Croc's base. Woopsie!) If you liked what you saw, please subscribe and if you REALLY liked it, go pledge on Patreon! It'd be great to see some new names. :) THANK YOU AGAIN, looking forward to having a chat in the Update! - Clemps

Great video, glad to have you back. Oh and One Piece World Seeker is actually quite good. I will be honest I did not finish it, but I rarely finish open world games and more importantly I do not regret playing it. It's a fun open world game where you traverse the world by zooming around via Luffy's rubber powers. Basically it's a budget version of the Spiderman 2 physics.

OP has a lot of moments like that for me, but the biggest is probably Brook's flashback while playing Binks' Sake at the end of Thriller Bark. "Well, it would seem we're down to a quartet. ...a trio. ...and, a duet. ... **breaking down** A solo. It isn't right, leaving just the accompaniment."

Alabasta is absolutely a slog, but I loved everything in the rest of the game after it. Really loved the moment at Water 7 where you examine an island nearby from the shore before entering the city, and everyone wonders whose memory is this since everyone clearly remembers there being no island close - with only Luffy being airheaded about such details, as usual - and then everyone chiming in with "Ah..." was on brand 😀

@Monty2289

If you attempt to do everything in Alabasta shy of the Red Chests you'll spend just as much time in Alabasta as the length of the arc. Its ridiculous how long it is and you can tell they front loaded the game and lost steam over time because the Alabasta Kingdom is ungodly huge for no reason other than its canonically big

Considering the whole thing about following dreams and Luffy's ability to inspire people, I am 100% expecting a "the real one piece is the friends we made along the way" moment, when they see there is no treasure, only to have some slapstick comedy moment knock down a wooden panel and reveal a mountain of gold and jewels.

Oda has confirmed the One Piece is a real, physical treasure... but I absolutely expect it to *symbolic of* "the real treasure is the friends we made along the way". I'll be disappointed if it isn't, even. There's a popular fan theory about exactly what it could be that I won't spoil, because you owe it to yourself to watch Artur, The Library of Ohara's 4-hour (yes really) video laying it out.

No, one piece isn't so simple. It's gonna be something that ties to other things in the story and serves a purpose. You think Roger was "too late" for the magic of friendship? You think the Roger pirates learned everything about the world and its history through what? Friendship? And it won't be ordinary treasure lmao

Personal advice: If you're apprehensive about the length of the One Piece anime in its vanilla state and want a specific fan rec, One Pace has been doing wonders for me. Just know that some arcs (especially Skypiea) aren't done in One Pace yet, so you'll need to jump to OP Kai briefly, which has some errors, albeit nothing that I find dealbreaking. Alternatively you could just sub in the vanilla episodes under a watch guide for slightly better consistency
@krvys7226

I will likely post this as a stand-alone comment as well, but another option I personally recommend is the manga. While I know 1000 chapters sounds like a lot, i instead recommend people break it down. my recommendation is to try to read around 50 chapters in a week. While still a good chunk of material, I know people who read twice that amount in a week. it works out to less than 10 chapters a day. at 50 chapters a day, you quickly realize you will be able to catch up to one piece in around half a year, which, while still a lot, is far less intimidating to think about.

I haven't seen the anime (other than clips) in years after I made the switch to the manga back in Water 7 so I decided to check out One Pace because of your comment and the video comparisons are blowing my mind. The OG is so slow. I'd still recommend the manga over the anime, but it'd be a shame to miss on all the great music and voice acting, and other good stuff, that I hold dear.
@PaszerDye
@PaszerDye Жыл бұрын
The pacing issues only really set in and become noticeable during Impel Down. I was able to stomach the god awful pace until Dressrosa, which was when I made the switch. So really, anything before Impel Down is still pretty great. And honestly, before I knew they filler arc, I thought all the fillers before the timeskip (except Spa Island) were canon, because they were just that good (to a relative standard) especially G-8. So watching the anime until Impel Down is still pretty solid. And arguably, the way the anime started the story and introduced Luffy is much better than the manga, where it starts out in the middle of the sea as pirates raid a civilian ship, and is a great execution of in media res.

There's an increased player speed mod and difficulty mod for the game. Haven't tried the latter but the former thoroughly improved my experience through the game. You also don't need to fully zoom into 1st person to activate Luffy's grab, makes the action feel somewhat more fluid. Hope you enjoy the game more when you get back to it even if the padding doesn't get much better

I had been meaning to get into this series for like a decade and I finally started binging it a couple years back. That sweet spot of East Blue all the way to Ennis Lobby is some of the most joyous I've experienced in an anime. Pacing slows to a crawl from then on and I pretty much gave up on the anime during Whole Cake, but I still have nothing but fondness for the series and plan to jump back into Wano with how gorgeous the production looks. I am 48 years old and a moderate manga/anime lover. Last year, I finally tasted "One Piece" and I just loved it: humour, drama, charadesign. So I continued relentlessly (AKA binge-watching). Now I am at the end of Dressrosa arc. While Akira Toriyama is the illustrator and charadesigner of Dragon Quest , as I was watching it, I just didn't understand why there were no JRPG. Now, there is finally after more than 25 years.

I'm currently at the tail end of Whole Cake and I gotta say, I'm really enjoying myself so far. Admittedly I'm watching an edited version just to help speed up the anime's pacing because oh man you can see the anime stretching (hah hah) for time with some episodes. But the biggest consistent detriment to my enjoyment when it comes to One Piece is how Oda has unfortunately gotten weaker about how he's written his female characters. Dressrosa was painful at times when it came to its writing of Rebecca and how she was not allowed to impact the plot in any meaningful way. And what makes it worse is that Oda used to be really good about writing his female characters with more depth and agency like with Nami, Robin, and ViVi. I will say, Carrot has been an absolute joy to watch so maybe it was just something he struggled with for Dressrosa and the previous timeskip arcs but I don't know if it gets better or worse from where I'm at.

As a big fan of the series and someone who did finish Odyssey: The original parts of its story are quite good and specifically the Marineford and Dressrosa Memorias were great, but the first half of the game is generally a slog and it doesn't really put up a challenge (unless you forget to upgrade your equipment / cook revival items like I did until the Tower of Law). I'm hoping that the devs take some good feedback for the dlc and recreate the Eneru face meme

I remember getting into it back in elementary school when it was running on tv and I stil love it like twenty years later, even if I don´t consistently keep up with the manga. Honestly speaking, if it turned out One Piece was a giant troll move the guy did just to get back at the Navy I honestly think Luffy would still find the Positive even in that. Even if it was a lie, I think Luffy would still smile saying it brought him many adventures and it gave him friends that are irreplicable. And he managed to not only help people along the way but also made the world just a lil better for everyone, and this is coming from someone who isn't even a fan of the series.

I love One Piece. I loved anime games when I was younger. But a thought that nagged at me even then was the exhaustion I felt playing through the Namek arc, then the Android arc, then the Cell Games arc for the 13th time. And that was how much those games could actually do with the properties they had and how comparatively little they actually did with them. I had sworn off those games cause of how disappointed I felt, but this game drew me in. Partially cause I'm a OP mark and partially cause maybe they actually pulled it off. They didn't. What I will say is how I noticed that we stopped at exactly the same point. Right after you get the smaller crab and cross the sand lake. I just couldn't anymore. Great video!!

Hello Clemps, I love your channel and have been watching since the days of your collabs with SuperBestFriends. I have only one complaint, which I hope is tempered by how much I appreciate your analyses (especially about the Nier/Drakengard games, which I credit with a deeper understanding that I personally gained on transhumanist narrative and the dichotomy of hope and despair): You said, "the second colossi." Colossi would be the plural, and, as an English teacher, this sentence should instead read, "the second colossus." Otherwise, even as someone who bounced off of 4Kids One Piece twenty years ago, this was a delightfully entertaining video. Keep up the wonderful work!

One Piece is my undisputed favorite manga of all time, and a strong contender for my favorite story of all time. I won't claim to love it more than anyone else, because that would be silly, but to me, its one of the greatest treasures in my life. So with that said, I was really hoping you were going to tell me about how imaginative and interesting this setting is and how its one of the best non-canon adventures the Straw Hats have ever been on. Now, seeing that its just another case of "this anime game is just the canon story, but remixed to be not as good" for large chunks of it really sucks.

Odyssey sounds like the anime: the game. Plenty of potential, bogged down by padding and flashbacks. I dream of the day we get a good OP game without any caveats. Where the devs are allowed to design new outfits instead of those goddamn Fishman Island threads. Where the game isn't just a retread of familiar ground with fan-favourite characters randomly inserted into the story for no reason. Maybe when the series is over we can have that freedom.

Im glad I wasn't the only one that felt this way. If they had just told an original story with old islands as the backdrop, I probably would've liked it more. I couldn't even make it out of Alabasta. I think the moment that broke me was the whole walking up to the cave and then making me walk all the way back to do nothing and then walking to the cave again was what got me. I also appreciate that the characters acknowledge that they're in a memory but, the fact that they just forget certain things like the crab mover for no reason other than to pad the gameplay? Why????

I think if you're not a classical RPG fan this game will kill you. And when I saw classical RPG I mean the style overall and pacing. Albasta's pacing is the worst for sure but I think if you're trying to complete the game. Find all the cubes, obtain all red chests, do all side quests, as well as complete all of Robin's info finds that pacing destroys you. By the time I completed the game I wanted to grind to LV 70 and defeat all of the Super boss memories but I just...couldn't. I was just done with the game. Since it was done with me. I hate to compare this game to DQ11 but its about as close in tone as you can get to it and of course it'll never measure up to that gameplay loop but that game had a way of keeping me going. Even if the latter time travel portion is a lot retreading between new abilities, expanding story segments, ways to min-Max BEFORE encountering the last boss I was able to find some enjoyment even in the sloggest part. Drustan's Dungeon being repeated 5 times in a row was a perfect example of this. Considering Waford was treated more of a back drop and probably 1/8th of your overall time with the game by the time I beat the game I just didn't care anymore

@@Monty2289 i've played my fair share of classical turn-based RPGs. One Piece Odyssey is so mindless i was able to grind to level 30 in the demo and carry that progression into the full game. I would honestly much rather trudge through World Seeker again. If they made a game like that with better controls, i think that would be the best a One Piece game can offer: original story, open world, action combat, etc. It had all the ingredients, just couldn't deliver

I'm on the last chapter of the game & have enjoyed it over all but I feel like they dropped the ball in one particular segment. *SPOILERS* I feel it would've been much better if Ace was "rescued" at the end of Marineford. We should've rescued him this go around & then they could've really twisted the knife by having the crew escape to Memoria & once they're there Ace would either: A) Simply be gone once they all get back to Memoria; everyone looks around to find him missing because he's just a manifestion of a memory that can't exist beyond the Marineford segment. Glad we "saved this version of him but we're left with a hollow victory. B) everyone's there, including Ace; the crew just rolls with it, why question a good thing? They throw one of there parties where they all happily banter, with him expressing his gratitude to everyone & how proud he is of his baby brother's huge leap in strength but then a few minutes into the scene, he abruptly starts to disappear (like Corazon in Dressrosa). He's not understanding what's going on, crewmates frantically turning to Lim to ask if she can stop/fix what's going on but she'll be too out of her depth to even give an explanation & Luffy will lose him all over again, even after saving him. An arguably more painful scenario. C) OR my personal preference; have it play out like scenario B but ultimately nothing happens. He's just somehow still around to everyone's confusion, especially Lim's & have him join the crew for the remainder of the game. Have him pick up on the details of the situation he's now in & learn that he's a manifestion of a memory & once the previously mentioned Corazon bit wraps up, Ace could hang back to ask Lim "is that what's going to happen to me?" with her responding with "I don't know" & have that weigh on his mind for the remainder of the game & at the end pull a FFX with him disappear after coming to terms that he's not the real Ace but being content with having been able to help his brother along his journey before saying goodbye to Luffy (again). Just IMAGINE the interactions with Sabo in the Dressrosa segment! Ace reuniting with the brother he thought was long dead (& now has his Devil Fruit), Sabo getting to see the the brother he knows to be dead and Luffy having both his big brothers back, for just awhile at least. All three boys together again. OMG, that would've been amazing fan fiction BS right there, lol! 🥲 ANYTHING would've been better than him getting hit with a stray off screen fireball to then just fall over & smolder to death in a jank, lackluster animation with everyone just going "... OK, gotta go!" like it was no big deal. It left me going "wait, that's it? THAT'S IT?!" & I had to stop playing for a few days due to how anticlimactic it was. 😩 Like I said, I dig the game over all but the fumbling of the revisit to Marineford really took the wind out of my sails.

One Piece is one of those shows that I've tried to get into several times, but I just keep falling off and I couldn't tell you why. This may have convinced me to give it another shot. We'll see if I manage to stay on board this time.

Hey! Loved the video. I hate to admit this as a huge OP fan myself (even a co-host of an OP-themed podcast), but I dropped the game at nearly the EXACT place as you, only stopping as soon as Water 7 began in the game. Same as you: despite absolutely loving One Piece, the pacing of the missions and the lack of narrative creativity within the established rules of Odyssey (at least in Arabasta) got me burnt out. I intend to finish the game at some point for the pod, buuuuu~uuut it drained my excitement a bit. Great job on this, BTW! You've come a long way since your Drakengard vids!

The best way to enjoy one piece imo is the fan reedited anime like one pace that remove all the fats and stay closer to the manga. Get the best of both worlds that way.

Sounds like the memorable/nostalgic main attraction of visiting old memories only served to have you say "Yea I remember these people and places" but slowed down any kind of main plot during that time.

It's really unfortunate that so many One Piece games do the story retread. Unlimited World Red did the same thing and while it did work for me as a lapsed fan and lover of games that feel like they came off the ps2, it is tiresome that they don't just settle on an original story for a whole game. This video kicked my "I should get back to reading One Piece" into gear again though, so great job!!

I'm glad I made the right call on Odyssey. I played the demo and it seemed good but from what I played of the first chapter it looked like they front loaded a lot of the newer things. This game along with a lot of other One Piece media that I don't like in recent time is this need to revisit moments and Arcs of the past. I understand that One Piece is very long and people who were watching/reading 20 years ago might not remember everything or people picked it up recently and skipped ahead to see what's current. It's this constant need to revisit and fear of doing anything new that especially in the video games that's getting annoying. Also the tiring use of the Fishman Island arc outfits even through the Straw Hats haven't worn those outfits in about...10 years now. I understand from a game design pov it's easier to use the marketable outfits and modeling them is much easier but still. It's One Piece, it's one of the most imaginative series ever made. You'd think game designers would use the world and characters in fun and interesting ways but nah let's just revisit a bunch of popular moments.

I've tried watching One Pace but it took out too many little things out of that the anime did that I liked. A good ol fast forward button and filler list is enough for me but if you do care about being as ACURATE AS POSSIBLE then yeah go for One Pace! I kinda want a version of One Pace that just removes the non canon stuff and reduce the recaps/flashbacks to a normal understandable amount. Kinda sad to see an emotional scene and think in the back of your head I am going to see this repeated over and over for the rest of the arc.

OPO could have been so much more one odd thing is that they did not use cel shading to make it look more animated but tried this semi real graphical style wich looks uncanny in places. But it was a good excuse for Clemps to talk aoput One Piece wich is an automatic win ( great stuff Clemps, + if you want to branch out into One piece videos or anime in general that would be most welcome)
