Fun fact: Oda never reuses the existing panels for flashback scenes. He draws all the flashback scenes all over again. He clarified why he does that. to be fair, i woudln't care if it meant making the next chapter faster or longer, the same way most anime reuse drawings in the penultimate episode flashbacks to make the final episode better, but another reason to redraw is that he got better along the way, and suddenly mixing old drawings with new drawings would look weird

To add about Sabo's foreshadowing: - Enies Lobby: When Robin and Spandam try to explain in the rooftop scene what the World Government flag means, Luffy, the same guy that doesn't understand simple structures like Baroque Works, says "I know very well what Robin's enemy is". They already took a brother from him. - Alabasta: Ace's tattoo has the S crossed out in his arm. - From the very start in the manga, the first time that the "Vow of brotherhood" was shown as a tease of a flashback, there was the shadow of a third cup. The theory of a third brother/sister existed since that moment.

A bit late I know but what I always loved about Luffy's reaction to Ace's death is it subverts a troupe that is very common in Manga and Anime where typically this leads to the character snapping into a fit of ultimate rage (the iconic moment when Goku goes Super Saiyan for example), Luffy however...it breaks him, there is no "how dare you! I will make you suffer!" He reacts how a normal person probably would and mentally shuts down

One little detail Oda hid in this saga that both blew my mind and broke my heart was how specifically Ace's death played out. First for clarification the three admirals here are primarily addressed by nicknames which are a neat tie in to the Japanese momotaro story but not my main focus here. Stupid lava man aka Akainu's real name is Sakazuki, and he was introduced in a flashback much earlier in the story (keep an eye out on your reread you'll hate him even more). What makes this heart wrenching is that sakazuki is also the name both for the cups Luffy Ace and Sabo drank from to declare their brotherhood and the name of a ritual with these same cups used to swear loyalty to another. Oda literally throws it in our face that Ace was killed by his loyalty and devotion to others, first by falling to Akainu's goading of his father figure in Whitebeard and then by sacrificing himself for his sworn brother in Luffy

Dadan beating up Garp was also one of my favorite scenes. After the war Garp goes back to Fuschia village only to face Dadan. And she beats him up cause as she sees it, he didnt do anything to save Ace, the child he brought home to her to raise. But also Garp let her beat him because he feels guilt for not being able to do anything and feeling like he deserves this punishment, especially from the woman who raised Ace and Luffy.

And the moment makino says “garp is hurting the most” and dadan screams “no, luffy is the one who’s suffering the most”…. God damn

@starfish55993 жыл бұрын
Not only did Garp think he deserve Dadan's beating, he also thought that he need it. He need someone to beat the shit out of him, to scold him, and to told him that it's his fault, because it would keep him sane. We can debate whether Garp is right or wrong, but there're times when we think that we just did something horrible that being unpunished makes us mad. That's what Garp feels at that moment
@tintedpalette6533 жыл бұрын
That scene in particular makes me tear up the most. Like it’s such a good scene because it does “show don’t tell” so amazingly. It doesn’t need to have Garp monologue that he blames himself for us to understand the turmoil he’s in. We can naturally understand the inner thoughts of these characters and that makes it all the more emotional.
@ChaosSepher3 жыл бұрын
Another aspect I love about that sequence is that Dadan was always terrified of Garp. For at least years he would strongarm her into doing whatever he wanted using his strength and position. But in this moment amidst her rage and grief she gave absolutely zero F**ks and let him have it.

Merphy, enthusiastically forgetting that Dragon is Garp's son:
@WichDK2 жыл бұрын
Thats not confirmed yet, only that he is Luffys dad. We still know very little about the monkey family. Edit: people think just because dragon has the name "monkey" that he is related to garp, this is not confirmed, read the manga, a low ranking marine is asking this question "so is dragon garps son?!" But with no answer. Dragon could easily have taking the monkey name when he married/met Luffys mom... Like i said, we know very little about the monkey family, and we know nothing of the relation between garp and dragon. Remember when we all thought that dragon also was aces father, because we where told luffy and ace where brothers... We dont have enough to directly confirm anything, except that luffy is grandson of garp, and son of dragon, we have nothing on how garp and dragon is related.

Now that Haki has been explained, I think it's worth clarifying that Hawkeye's comment during Marineford about Luffy's ability to draw people to him is not Haki-related. While the Color of the Supreme King Haki is extremely rare and does imply a greater destiny, Hawkeye is simply talking about who Luffy is as a person. He is just someone who is able to get virtually everyone to like him and help him out (such as that ragtag group from Impel Down), and that in itself is a powerful ability. Which is just awesome and a huge part of the reason why we love our boy so much lol.
@marocat47493 жыл бұрын
Yep thats his personality.
@soulscribe_h3 жыл бұрын
Conqueror's Haki does bare significance in Luffy's ability to draw people near him and make them believe in his goals/help him, since that specific Haki implies that the person in question has "the qualities of a King", or leader if you will. That's why is so rare and you can't train to have it, just develop it if you were born with it.

The reason Garp had given off Ace & Luffy to Dadan is because they were both children of Roger & Dragon. @cancerxnd Roger knew what the Government would do to his son, which is why he begged Garp to protect him. Because he believed that his child shouldn't be responsible for his own crimes. The thing to realize about Garp is he's a military man. It would be almost impossible to raise one child, let alone two (or three) by himself. As an example, just from an US Army perspective, you might go out to the field for a week once every month or two. You might go to a training base for a month. You might get deployed for 6 months to a year and a half. How would you raise a child on your own? I don't think Garp was a good parental figure, but I can understand why he wasn't.

Just wanted to note that Imo Sabo's "death" is still emotional even though its obvious for the reader that he likely survived. From Ace and Luffy's perspective they have no reason at all to assume he survived and to them he's dead. Especially when talking about kids, it doesn't really matter what actually happened, what matters is what they think happened. If learning an event that they thought happened didn't happen years later it doesn't erase the trauma of it.

If you want to see more of Sabo you should watch the anime's version of the flashback. They had a lot more filler that added so much more detail for like 2 pages worth of panels in the manga, that showcased the brotherhood of ASL. It made Sabo feel less like a plot device and more like an actual brother to Luffy and Ace. Especially slotted in between Luffy and Ace. Where they're all wild and crazy, Sabo is the brains and luffy's "kind" brother that outwardly shows he cares, compared to Ace who's telling him to shut up and man up.

All throughout his appearances I've never cared much for him - possible reasons could include the fact I was watching the anime so I wasn't getting the real experience, or the fact his initial introduction and role bored me so I associated him with that boredom, or maybe even just that he looks too silly. There's readers that can look past the silly designs Oda gives characters, I respect that, glad for them, but Jinbe, Ivankov, Raizo, even Franky... all cool guys, all too weird-looking for me to ever take 100% seriously. It’s nice to see someone from the literary crowd appreciate One Piece. Most fans of One Piece are also fans of other anime and manga, and when you try to show someone who isn’t part of that crowd the story they take one look at Luffy’s goofy smile and non-edgy design and a look at the series length and they don’t give it a chance. So it’s nice to see someone tell us that it’s not wrong that we love this series so much.

Honestly even other anime fans do that. "It looks too goofy and is too long" then proceeds to binge watch/read all the other long running shonen that were rivaling it's length before they had to come to an end lol. It's whatever though, most ppl watch anime like this cause of cool designs and action scene animation, or in the case of manga.... Cool designs I guess. Odas early, "opposite of edgy without getting into chibi cutesy realm" artstyle on the covers plus his intentional love of creating some of the most off the wall goofy designs for even the series' more complex and intimidating characters just goes against that instinct for those kinds of viewers I guess. Each follow their own code, which only makes each one of them very fascinating. Also from the perspective of regular people, Akainu might be seen as a paragon of justice for regular people. She had said that if she could choose to play any character, it'd be Nico Robin (which makes perfect sense, Robin is amazing in every possible way), but aware of her age and physique, both her and her daughter want her to play Kureha in the Live Action adaptation, and I'm 100% for it

When you have such a long running story, most of the readers will want flashbacks of previous events in the story so Oda having all these "repetitive" flashbacks of when Luffy asked them to join the crew, it had already been years and years for a lot of the fan base and it was much needed!
@sleepysera3 жыл бұрын
When this flashback happened, I really disliked the idea of Sabo initially. My first thought was that he was just added to make it easier to get over Ace, because hey, look, here's another brother you can like instead! And it really bothered me because you can't just easily replace Ace like that?? So I was genuinely glad when his ship got blown up (even though I liked him as a character, just not his percieved role as replacement brother). To me, the flashback and Sabo's apparent death worked _because_ it established so well why Ace and Luffy clung to each other so desperately - because they only had each other after Sabo died. And returning to the present from there to Luffy who has now lost EVERYTHING, only for Jimbei to show him that...no, he has friends now, he has his crew, he isn't that helpless kid anymore that clung to Ace when he had no one else, and regaining his will to find them again and become strong enough to be able to protect them ....that was such a good emotional thorough-line to me 🥲

I think there's a bit of a cultural disconnect in terms of how kids are supposed to be treated. Kids, on average, are treated in a more... spartan... sort of way in most Asian cultures. Abuse, in a way that is understandably bizarre, can also be something that isn't too far off from tough love.

just a couple of thing: To understand why such parenting figures are so relevant in OP without being seen as inherently bad tutors, (Garp/Dadan/Sanji's one legged cook etc..) it's good to know a bit of Japanese culture itself, where the stereotypical "tough love" is a lot more prevalent and present, and so it the concept of being a "tsundere" (cold but warm personality). Not justifying any sort of behavior, it's just interesting to see how different cultures create different prospective on certain things. second: since OP fans, as you might have understood by now, like to theorize on everything, around this period it has been asked to Oda why all the world nobles looked so ugly, if there was a secret behind their origin and genealogy. Oda reply was that he hates them soo much that whenever he is drawing them he can't help but make them as ugly as possible. and idk, I love it so fucking much. I sincerely recommend you not to miss the Sbs (Q&A )at the end of each volume as they can be hilarious and or hide secret/additional infos relevant to the story.

They both basically robbed people for a living until circumstances changed (Dadan being caught by Garp, Zeff loosing his leg and opening the Baratie). They're good people, but that doesn't mean they were always good people, and even good people are flawed. The whole Garp thing is played for more comedy than the above two examples, so I didn't include it.

During the “I want to live” scene at Enies Lobby, right before Luffy tells Sogeking to shoot the flag, Spandam says “You can’t possibly understand what you’re dealing with when you try to protect this woman!” to which Luffy replies, “I understand Robin’s enemy very well.” Now with this flashback, we realize that Luffy really does understand the horrors of the nobles and the world government because he understands what Sabo went through as a child of nobles.

@@Chocolangot I just did a re-read of the whole series, and everything was fine until punk hazard and dressrosa There, I thought Dressrosa was way too long The arc is massive for the world since it introduces the fleet, but it didn't have to be this long and convoluted to achieve the same results imo. ironically, Whole Cake was the arc that made me drop reading One Piece weekly, but this time I had a blast reading it in one go ! Only thing I don't like is Luffy winning against Katakuri, just feels cheap to me, but I understand that's a shonen trope of people getting stronger in battle and whatnot, but man... I think it would have been better if Luffy lost to Katakuri but managed to stand his ground. It would also fit with what Shanks told him "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes you run away", and would have served to show some growth in Luffy. Which is something I think I dislike too: Luffy didn't grow in the two years. He got stronger, sure, but otherwise he's still the same as post-skip That's a choice and I get it, but I was disappointed I didn't want him to become some mature person, but at least somewhat more "captain-y" ? But I think my tw biggest disappointment from the New World are: 1- everything feels rushed. There's no more feeling of "oh what's next ? let's explore !" it"s more like "we're on this straight line and we are forced into these conflicts and we HAVE to go from A to B. Which I think bothers me because the New World was supposed to be this whole new sea with very weird stuff and 3 log pose pointing to three islands each time, which made me think "OH ?! Even more adventure and discoveries at random ??? Let's explore !" But instead we go from one place to the next in a straight line without much pause between the major events, so it feels very rushed to me. 2- There is very little interaction between the crew members and I feel like they are secondary characters in face of a plethora of other secondary characters (dressrosa for example) The arcs feel less personal, and we don't see the crew together as much just interacting So it feels like I haven't seen much of the "new" crew together since they set sail for Fishman island Which might explain why Whole Cake is my favourite arc so far in the NW ! it's focused heavily on a character's place in the crew and the bond they share. And that's my favourite part of One Piece For all these reasons, my peak enjoyment of One Piece was: Water7/EniesLobby for character interactions and crew ImpelDown/Marineford for overall plot And I feel like the world building was stronger before

@@arenkai I agree with the sentiment that Dressrosa was super king but what I disagree with is that it’s kinda needed considering the fact that there are so many different players in the arc and so many different factions with their own goals if you were to cut stuff away you would lose incite into why the people that are there are there for also it’s kinda been built up to be linear considering the whole Zoe thing where they agreed to help the people of Wano and Luffy declaring war on some of the biggest names on the grand line especially since we are fairly deep into the grand line we are at the point at which all of the most powerful people kinda start to condense

Ik the flashbacks got really repetitive, but you have to remember how much real-world time passed between the release of their intro and this chapter's release. Zoro - 13 yrs Nami - 13 yrs Usopp - 12 yrs Sanji - 12 yrs Chopper - 10 yrs Robin - 8 yrs Franky - 4 yrs Brook - 3 yrs These were call backs to a long time ago for readers that had been keeping up with the release.
