ONE-POCKET - Russia’s FEDOR GORST and USA’S JOSH ROBERTS were in the FINALS of the 2022 Derby City Classic One-Pocket division. Gorst, 21, was not recognized as a one-pocket expert, but he wasn’t recognized as a bank pool expert either, yet he won the bank pool division days before. Roberts, on the other hand was a well-known experienced one-pocket player just winning the $11,000 grand prize at the Iron City Open just weeks prior.
Mark Wilson and Jeremy Jones covered the action.

And Jeremy is one of the best, MHO. His knowledge amazes me. He not that infrequently says something like "I don't like this shot because ..." and not that infrequently the possible bad outcome possibility he points out, occurs. He also picks the pro's shots that they play, even when they look at several others, the kind where Jeremy says something like "well now, if that is lined up ..", or "is that lined up" beforehand, correctly. Then the again, the 'old married couple' of Danny and Incardo is occasionally hilarious in their bickering/ comment wit.

@@rackyballboa5744 I haven't heard Josh, I would like to after what you just said. I've heard Frost do it and it was very good. Mark is good but it seems like the same ole thing and after a while I got tired of him. He brings interesting thoughts to the discussion on rare occasions, but all the stroke, stance, jumping up stuff just gets tiresome after a while. I got it the 348,000th time. i understand his background so it's not surprising, just my personal take. He is definitely better doing one pocket than rotation. Some others I like are Karl Boyes, especially when he's with that goofy Brit that seems to come up with at least one priceless gem every match. Neils does a really good job, tons of applicable analysis and possible available options sort of stuff. He has a good YT channel too, where he goes into aspects many other channels don't seem to cover, and usually pretty deeply. My all time favorite from Boyes, and it was pretty sporty, but you know pool players, was Jeremy said he liked the shot clock in one match they were commentating and Boyer said something like Really? Even after the Mosconi cup? Ouch. Jeremy just laughed. I felt terrible for JJ when that happened, especially since he was on the shot where he'd just won a great safety battle, that could have been decisive. Sucked, not much anyone could do about it. I heard one where Skyler and Billy were commentating and those two were a riot, just constant stupid funny crap, but some good analysis as well. It was like 'good ole boy' commentating. Varner is funny, and that goofy laugh.

Fedor Gorst played well. I was disappointed with Josh Robert's performance; he made a few careless errors that even a novice would not likely make. However, even the top players can have an off day once in while.

On any given shot or choice maybe, but more consistently make? You might want to rethink that statement, unless you are talking about a very very very good amateur. When I watch even the best of our amateurs in the hall, and some of them would be competitive in ANY amateur tournament, the one pocket looks noticeably different than the (especially good, like Feder's here) play. Not arguing, just a thought. Justin Hall has played a few times against our best and it is almost always just a route. Practially every set actually, and when you look at Justin's shot choices, choices he would virtually never make against a good pro even as aggressive as he plays his pro matches, you can see he is essentially playing with his food, and he makes them an absurdly high percentage of the time. I'm talking not terribly lined up kick caroms and similar. Incredible to watch, especially when he is essentially free wheeling like that. I watched him run out a really tough table once and nobody on the rail even reacted. I said something like "Man, tough crowd. You make a run out like that and they just expect it". He just kind of grinned. Seems like a nice guy, and pretty humble from what I've seen. And MY GOD, can he play one pocket. I think our best guys play him for a few bucks just to learn.

"Hard to get it perfect" No, it is IMPOSSIBLE to get it perfect, no rack has either been perfectly tight or perfectly positioned since the dawn of time (not that it matters to the break, when very very close to that unattainable ideal). That is how perfect works. People who realize that fact, in this example I'm presenting here, wrt the fact that you can't ever hit a ball perfectly centered, Ronnie O Sullivan says that he purposely hits the cue ball off center by a microscopic amount, because at least then he knows the direction of the bias off of a cushion that the English will produce, rather than taking a chance it might end up in the wrong direction. If a lot of people said something like that I wouldn't even pay any attention, but when probably the best ball pocketer in the world says it, it is just may be the time to listen. Not that it matters much for my level of play, but for a Filler or Shaw or SVB type it very much might. Looking at the similarities between SVB's and Ronnie's strokes, which are very different from pretty much everyone else's I see, SVB is one guy who has paid some attention to what Ronnie does. Slow the two strokes down with the speed control on YT when you get a really good example of a side on shot on each and watch especially at what happens at the butt end just before and after the rearward most part of the stroke and you will see what I mean. And as far as I've seen it is pretty unique to those two. Could be just a coincidence, but I somehow doubt it. I heard (I think it was) Allison Fisher one time say she tried that stroke for a bit and she couldn't make it work worth a crap, and she has one of the best, most consistent strokes in pool, IMHO. She is practically like a robot in her consistency, fluidity, pre shot, etc. A beautiful pool player, in more ways than one, again, IMHO, and MAN can (and especially could) she play. I would kill (not really, but close) to have 30% of her abilities. :-)

@HunterFisherPokerPoolGuy Maybe, I don't know. If you notice many pros aim with the stick behind the ball right on the cloth, and then just swing the tip up into the desired cue ball contact point. I'm assuming that is some form of back hand English, because I am clueless as to how that would work otherwise. Efren used to do it a lot. I've seen Busty do it many times. I had a friend that played really well that used to aim that way. One day I said maybe I should try it, and he said something like, Don't you will screw yourself up, so evidently it has some learning curve. Maybe it is some vertical center line aim? I will have to look more carefully at that end of the stick to see what you are talking about. Interesting. Short answer, I don't know.
@MrJdsenior

@HunterFisherPokerPoolGuy Yes, as for me you could have capitalized MANY. :-) I was playing a guy in league one night that is about fourteen levels above me, the sort that would basically rank up in the hundreds in an APL type league. One of the top three amateurs in the hall, and we have some GOOD ones. Anyway, I went to take a shot and said something like the fact that some shot I pointed out was probably the right one, but I was going to wimp out and do something else. Unsurprisingly I lost the game on that shot. This guy is not unlikely to break and run any given eight ball table, I've seen him do three and out, the other guy not showing up would have made zero difference. Anyway, the next day he told me that the shot I had picked was better than the one I took but that there was a much better one available. He took me over to the table I was playing on and set up the pertinent part of the arrangement and showed me a dead easy lock up safe that was available. I shook my head and asked him how long it took to see stuff like that, and he said for him, about 40 years. A light instantly came on in my head and I realized he isn't even playing a significant part of his game against me. It's like another time, again against a different stellar guy, I said that at least I had won three of ten in 8 ball that day, and he said that he was running them in order. I said "a**hole", and he laughed. I found playing with guys significantly better than I was brought my game up a lot faster than it had been moving before. Not surprising, if you can get them to play. I just made it fun for them with the banter and camaraderie, because I sure didn't have any "bring it" to offer. :-)

These are not our country’s best one pocket players, it’s kinda ridiculous. This is like trying to hybridize 9 ball and 14:1. It’s the dumbest 1 pocket game I’ve ever seen, and it’s a championship. So ridiculous, they both fall short on themselves, they’re not serious 1 pocket players. Period. Those who know, they know. These players would lose their shoes at Chris’ Billiards in Chicago. I love to see the best, but they’re not he best!!!
