In this video, I analyze what I think is the scariest scene from the 2008 horror movie Lake Mungo. Lake Mungo is one of the most tragic horror movies I've ever seen, and has a lot of creepy moments. But there's one scene in particular that I will never forget. One that left me completely unsettled, and frightened by its jump scare. And that's the cell phone footage scene towards the end of the movie. In this episode of "One Terrifying Scene", I talk about what makes this Lake Mungo's scariest scene, and why it is truly terrifying.

I think it's heavily, heavily overrated. I see it listed all the time on lists like "scariest horror movie", "underrated horror movies". "BEST horror movies" , and it has one scary scene - and it is an unnerving scene - and that's it. I'm sorry, but this is a movie about a girl's grieving parents and it frankly just isn't that great. I've watched it twice now and while it isn't a slog by any means, it's... just underwhelming.

I agree. Blair Witch may have pioneered this form, but I believe this is a better movie. The super subtle black and white photo near the end showing her sitting sadly at the back of the garden was just perfect.
@MiketheratguyMultimedia
@MiketheratguyMultimedia 3 ай бұрын
I don't mean to nitpick but it's not a found footage movie. Nothing is found, this isn't the same scenario as Blair Witch or Cloverfield in which some horrific thing happens and we're left to watch the harrowing end. This movie was presented in the form of a non-fiction documentary with participants who were portrayed as real people discussing what's happening to them. I mean again, I'm not trying to be picky, I just think that when people see the term "found footage" they go in expecting a totally different type of movie than what this actually is. If anything Lake Mungo is similar to The Last Broadcast, which itself predates Blair Witch in the "found footage" genre.

Just so people know, Alice drowned in a dam in her hometown of Ararat whilst going for a swim with her family, she did NOT drown at Lake Mungo. She only buried her things at Lake Mungo because it was after her encounter with her doppelganger, and she wanted to bury her most precious belongings in a place she loved. Her reason for haunting her family's house, as well, was to make sure her family found her belongings and saw the footage on her phone. I don't believe her death was a murder, either, as some people theorize, I think it was simply an accident that was, sadly, always going to happen. I feel like she wanted them to understand what she had been going through, the nightmares she had been having, the feeling of dread, all those things that she never told them about or probably felt like she couldn't talk to them about. At the same time, however, I also think she wanted them to understand that her death was inevitable, that there was nothing any of them could do, and that they shouldn't blame themselves.
@pennywright3274

You know, I had previously thought it was a murder. But your comment is so beautiful. It could still be a murder, but even if it was a murder or not, the inevitability of your demise once you see it has always fucked me up. I'm not burying my cellphone anytime soon, though.

And the worst part, not for us the viewers but for her, was that she must have known that day that it was THE day. And that to me is what is horrifying. The four months between this scene and her death must have been petrifying for her. Like before it was a feeling but now she knew why she always felt like that. Now she had proof of her end, finally having caught up with her. I actually think what she saw turned into self fulfilling prophecy for her and that it was what probably gave her the push to end it that day to escape all those feelings. I remember a scene where her brother said he saw her towel flowing in the water. Like it's very likely it was a successful su****e attempt.

@@trayclancyI saw the movie again after a while. The first time I saw it it was about this scene and what the family was going through but after this watch, I found myself focusing on her and I definitely believe that a su****e was the most likely cause of her death given how she appeared to be experiencing depression even before that trip. And unfortunately, people experiencing depression have one of the highest rates of attempted su***es out there.

This movie is genius! The thing that makes this scene so effective is the fact that in the middle of the plot the director makes you belive that there is nothing really supernatural and that's only the brother making things up. And then when this scene happens you are genuinely caugh out of guard. I wish in more mockumentary/found footage movies like this, without cheap jumpscares, because it's a genre with a lot of potential.

I started watching this once and got so angry when the brother said he "photoshopped" pictures to make his parents feel better. I got so angry (for some reason) that I stopped watching the movie. A few weeks later I decided to just try it again, because I had actually heard good things about the movie. That's when I realized the photos he "photoshopped" actually had her in the picture, which made it so creepy and honestly fantastic. Glad I decided to watch it all the way through though.

Try not to get in the habit of just giving up on a film unless it was genuinely boring or frustrating to watch. Some good films like this are slow burns. I understand your annoyance too at that brothers confession, but it wasnt that big of a deal imo.

@pennywright3274 3 ай бұрын
@@anthonyt219i think it was a huge deal but not willing to argue with you about it because your other point is fantastic (and therefore trying not to derail this comment). So, and I think this is why spoilers and channels like this can be so fucking powerful and valuable, I don't always have the courage to sit down and watch a horror movie. I struggle with depression enough to want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing. That the art IS going to be worth it, that's it not just suffering for the sake of suffering. I also struggle with pacing my own stories because I can't control how much benefit of the doubt a reader or whatever will give me.

I loved watching horror movies, but this scene I couldn't watch. And the credit scenes, where we can see her ghost on pictures where she was alive (that this curse was following her from the beginning) is just pure horror.

Top 3 ff films for me for me. What an amazing frickin movie. I remember watching this while I was younger, and I loved it. Now that I’m an adult, I love it even more, and I understand what it all means. It’s sad, creepy as hell and super clever.

The last scene of the movie would have been the scariest if it didn't pan to Alice sitting in the garden. Most people would think it's the same old photo.

The implication of that last scene is that nothing is resolved and the family is just leaving her behind.

I have seen a lot of horror movies. I love horror it is one of my favorite genres. Not much creeps me out anymore...this movie...this movie is freaking terrifying. The Conjuring's got nothing on how unsettling this movie is, it's just dreadful and takes the fear of the unknown to the next level. Idk in my opinion I think Lake Mungo is prolly the creepiest film I've seen but that's just me 10/10.

Hey man, I'm a huge fan of your work. I'm also a creator but in the true crime sphere. Of course, my videos are nowhere near the quality of yours. Do you mind me asking...what kind of editing software do you use? I'm doing everything on my ohone right now, so... it's not really ideal lol. However, I'll soon be getting a new computer and I want to make sure that I make the right decision when it comes to the editing software.

Lake Mungo - which is a real place located in New South Wales - has no water in it, in fact, it's been dry for 10,000 years. It has a very fascinating landscape, however, almost like you're on another planet. Outside of Africa, it is also one of the only places to be inhabited by humans since ancient times.

The purpose for Alice seeing her future dead body at Lake Mungo a year before she actually died was meant as a warning for her. So that she would be so scared at what she saw that she would never want to return to Lake Mungo again. But she and look what happened I would never ever go to that place again after seeing that

If by some chance you take requests for this series I’d really like to hear your breakdown of scenes from movies like Pearl, Get Out, or The Taking of Deborah Logan. Idk what it is about these three movies in particular but some of the scenes in them had some of the most disturbing (and in Pearl and The Taking’s cases disgusting) moments I’ve seen in horror from the past decade
