I use batching for watching KZfaq videos. Whenever I open KZfaq and have the urge to watch a video, I add it to watch later. At the end of the day I see my list and only watch upto a set limit, often times I end up saving time throughout the day and removing few videos without even watching them as I just wanted a distraction at that time of the day.

This sounds like something I should do since I already tend to add things to my watch later a lot, but I'm so addicted to watching videos in my spare time😂 it might also be a good idea to batch videos with similar topics too (eg. Art, productivity, psychology).

In planning, "batching" is called "blocking" where you block certain times of the day off for certain types of tasks so you don't get caught up in planning down to the minute and second of every day. Your life becomes so much more relaxed so I definitely think this will help people manage their time

@@mitziarciga3094 I know what you mean and I agree with you. Most of us are still figuring ourselves and don't know what works better. Self-improvement is a continuous process. I just wanted to share that batching related tasks is good but not too much! I say find the right balance and if a task takes less than five minutes to complete like cleaning the dishes after eating then do it now and don't wait for it to pile up. Checking off to-do lists produces feel-good chemicals in the brain batching takes longer to check that to-do list off. Thanks for the reply and TGIF 13th haha!

My wife tends to first get it all done once, then throughout the week she will wash one small load a day and puts it away immediately after it's all dry, that way it's not this monster at the end of the week. Just one hour or less task each day. Something like that ;)

I first found out about "batching" through procrastinating my weekly assignments for my highschool law class. It took so long for me to do just one per week so I stopped doing them until the last week before they were all due. But I noticed after the 3rd paper I was flying through the others and I was done before I knew it and I got a really great mark in the end.

I used to have such a cluttered schedule every week. I would try to squeeze my writing, studying, working, reading etc. etc. all into one evening, every evening. Then one day I was writing and I was so into it that I didn't move onto the next task like my schedule was supposed to. Ended up being one of the best chunks of writing I'd done. After that I instead decided to have one main priority each week. I didn't realise this had the name "Batching"

I've felt that. I'm always trying to do everything in a day. Batching or whatever, it's not only about productivity. I love staying in the Zone and I just feel happy doing it. Time kinda stops for a few hours. Switching between tasks gets you also super tired at the end of each day and you kinda feel like you've accomplished nothing.

@danilozaccardi864
@danilozaccardi864 4 жыл бұрын
I guess that the two things can coesist. For example in music you can have a pattern applied to a musical phrase that can be repeated and applied to different type of scales and sound and put in different context. Therefore you can recognize that same pattern in diffent/new songs and in that way you can trigger the flow state by novelty and pattern recognition at the same time. I think that this can work with other things too

Batching reminds me of cooks prepping their line for service or "mise en place" meaning everything in it's place. You wouldn't chop a tomato before it has to be cooked b/c that would put you behind and then it's a constant game of "ketchup." 😆 But really, batching makes sense in the kitchen and outside of it, I just never thought to do it with my work. Great video.

I'm so happy you've made a video about it! I've started doing this thing naturally at about 11 when I was writing three or more pages of the same sentence as a punishment. (I was just writing the same word on a new line for three pages, then the second and the third and the next one after that, after measuring, how many lines the sentence is going to take first). Because of the punishment I've realized, that I can do this technique with everything else. Like, coming up with the illustration ideas as a batch, drawing them all as a batch, etc. I have separate folders for articles to read later and every KZfaq video I want to watch, like someone else have already said in their comment, I add to "watch later", and then do it as a batch. The flow thing. I'm so pleasantly surprised that you're interested in this. I'm so happy I've found your channel. I love to see people, whose views on human growth are similar to mine)

I didn’t know I was doing this but I do get into the flow when I’m painting. I start with one painting and found that if I need to let things dry or get an idea I start another painting. And then that begets another painting. I am getting in the flow more. And I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but after I’m done painting I find that I’m so much more relaxed and many times stress is gone. And that can also be connected to creating art. It’s my meditation. Thanks Matt.

In my role I have multiple tasks that repeat on a daily basis ie. Purchase Orders, sending reminders and so on. I assign those repetitive tasks a day and I only work on them on those days. It helps me to focus on what I am doing at the time. ... only real problem with that is training people to understand that I only do certain things on certain days, but they do come around in the end. Don't understand how there aren't more people that work that way. Thank you for the video as I didn't now my method actually had a name.

Using “batching” for reading is nearly impossible for me. My biggest productivity weakness is reading fatigue and it’s a task I have to sprinkle throughout my day if I want to make any substantial headway on a text without falling asleep. Does anybody else experience that?

Imani hi! Reading is my life, I could read every waking moment, but, Matt says and he is so right, we are all different. For me, cooking is terrible, but I definitely prefer batching it rather than cooking God knows how many times a day. So I would say, do what works for you c: it’s not bad to have certain tasks you can’t do for too long.

Yes! But over time I've just discovered I'm an auditory learner. So I try to consume everything possible in audio instead of text. And if it's not an option I also break it into digestible pieces. Otherwise it's too difficult for me to process so much visual information at once. I end up remembering nothing, so it's a waste of time.

Hi there just stumbled across this video and boy am I shocked at the label "Batching". I have been doing this only for the last 20 YEARS. I did not know that's what its called. Hey, I was classed as a selfish person cos I would do all my tasks ie, when I need to go shopping, I would go to the bank and the post office at the same time in one area. When working in the kitchen I would cook, clean, mop and other stuff all in one go. I find 'batching' tasks are the most productive as well as an effiecient way of getting tasks done. I am so used to it now that I do this without realising I am doing it. WOW. Thank you for this realisation. I really enjoy your videos so keep them coming.

Matt, Have you seen heard of Day Wise app (android only) it uses batches to deliver notifications to you. Its basically traps all your notifications on your phone into one place to go look at either ad hoc or on schedule it will notify you "you have 14 new notifications". Those could range from Snap Chat to gmail messages. The best part is the VIP list. You can add specific contacts to ignore those rules and get those notifications immediately no matter the platform (Snap Chat, Gmail etc..) Not sure if there is an iPhone equivalent but if so I guarantee you would dig it. No I don't work for Day Wise and I almost didn't install it due to the fact its "backed" by Duke University.

Just deactivate notifications and check the apps you need to at a set time. You can still allow them for some apps or people
@codystewy
@codystewy 4 жыл бұрын
@@insert_name1632 I don't want to disable notifications though. I like getting them. I just prefer to look at them whenever I choose to with zero distractions during some days. Some days I want them instantly. This app allows you to do that without re-configuring every single app. I agree that deactivating notifications is a possible solution, but for me I still need emails from certain people to be instant and some I don't care if they are instant. It is more efficient in my use case to open one app instead of 10 apps to comb through notifications.
@mitziarciga3094

This is soooo helpful! I was just asking myself if I could do this with phone notifications and here you are giving a solution! I will definitely try it, I hate those group chats sending memes at odd times, but then they send info I really need, so I had been thinking how could I check it a few times a day, without having the sound distract me every time I get a notification. Thanks a bunch!

Hey Matt! Just wanted to say thank you for all your videos. I feel a productivity-high when I watch them but more important than that, it moves me to action. That says something--you are able to change peoples' behavior. I am a stay-at-home mom and don't have a lot of time to myself, and merely listening to your videos (and watching them when I can) has helped me bring some calm into my life, which is invaluable to someone with anxiety! So thank you! P.S. Love the idea of batching and checklists. I shied away from agendas after years and years of having a planner (que: anxiety), but am encouraged now to try a checklist on my phone.
