“Don’t be so rigid in your routines that you completely lose sight of why you are doing them in the first place.” That’s such great advice. I have such a hard time convincing myself not to do everything so perfectly that I completely miss the day and let time pass without actually completing my tasks. In the end, there’s nothing to be perfectionist about if you don’t actually accomplish anything!

Meditation, journal writing, yoga poses....Ask yourself whether these are activities you even like fulfilling, do they bring value to your life? Or are you incorporating 'mindfulness' practices to fill the void of unproductivity in your life. Am I doing this to avoid what I like or should be doing? Determine what you actually like doing, i.e. art, learning a language - and then devote a set of time for it every morning same time. Because too many mindful habits can become mindless.

Does anyone else feel that all these “motivational” material around youtube (wake up early, do that, do this) at some point tend to look like another job?! I mean, at some point, you want to do what you feel like, want to take a walk, take it, want to sleep more, sleep, want to learn something new, do it... but setting all these goala and expectations seems at some point just seems tiring. Is it just me? Am I weird for seeing things this way?

No that't exactly the issue. We are obsessed with self optimization. And often time it's sold as "self care" but is nothing more than more work, cutting down "spontanity" (sp?) To a point were it's not doable. And so we fail. And so on. Don't get me wrong I'd love to have a morning morning Routine because it would help me a lot. But most people are doing fine, so trying to "ootimize" is just putting on stress. Hope this wasn't too all over the place.

As a person who struggles with mental health issues (anxiety, depression, panic attacks), I find this morning routine stuff pretty overwhelming. It does not help me in any way. I do have many mornings where I struggle to even get up and having a shower or making a cup of coffee seems like climbing the Mt. Everest. That means, that in those mornings I am not able to follow a strict morning routine which gives me anxiety and the feeling of personal failure. I gave up to construct the perfect morning routine and do whatever feels right and good in the moment...

I’ve gotta disagree with this. There are so many aspects of our life that need to be worked on daily to become the best version of ourselves. Working on them before any other distractions arise makes so much sense to me! However, burnout is also real. Intentionally plan retreats, getaways, etc. Where you no longer need to worry about those things. What do you think?

I relate to this topic. In my early twenties, I tried so hard to set up routines and habits that I knew were "good for me". However, it always ended up becoming routines that I HAD to do instead of something I WANTED to do. Now I try to listen to my needs/emotions and practice self-care based on what feels right in the moment. I would say that nurturing habits/routines have their place. It will drain my energy, if I constantly have to be aware of my emotions/needs and act based on them. So it is also important to set routines/habits that are automatic behaviors, which you can fall back on.

@Taylor's Mood I agree, I just mean that in my experience I've found that when I keep obsessively searching for "the cure" (a new morning routine, a new meditation technique, a new habit, etc), I end up questioning whether I'm doing everything perfectly, and that need for perfection takes away from my enjoyment of life. It's definitely good to pursue self-improvement, but like with everything else, it's best in moderation so you don't let it consume you

Taylor's Mood it’s the idea of trying to be perfectly at peace... and trying to do that will just make your mind disturbed because it’s unachievable for this “peace” to be perfect and forever constant, yet we strive for something we can’t exactly have which will torment us and our minds.

Finally, someone's saying this on KZfaq. After trying to follow the perfect productive morning routine and failing at every try, I decided to not set a fixed morning routine but simply let myself wake up and do things when they come to my mind. Because I have different priorities every day, my morning routine needs to be adaptive. Otherwise, it feels like I am doomed first thing in the morning.

Routines are not meant to be perfect. Trying to follow a rigid schedule leads to us being easily frustrated when life inevitably gets in the way and we can't follow it. Then, once we *finally* get it perfect, we grow bored and the very reason we set the routine is washed away... I've found found lightly structured mornings to be the best set up for me. What type of morning routines do you guys have?

Can't agree more! The only long term routine is the one they have in prison! For the rest of us life gets in the way and mixes things up all the time and that's a good thing. In my case, at least for now, the morning routine consists in going to the gym and cooking for the day.

As I have problems with the posture, I found it very useful to do them in the morning, as you have more time and energy. Then journaling, and of course meditation. It takes me an hour to do all these things, but I have to admit that sometimes I feel a little overwhelmed , because it really takes an effort to follow through. this reflection about what you really want to do X what you're "supposed to be doing" in the morning is so important! with social media in our lives we see a lot of people with this crazy concept of productivity doing amazing things before the sun even comes up... it might be good for them, but it's not good at all for everyone. when i decided to respect myself and do things that make me feel productive in my own way, i started to see mornings so differently!

For instance waking up and immediately grab my phone and going on Facebook does not feel good to me. You spoke my heart out. A year ago or may be just a few weaks ago, I used to pressurize myself to follow those hectic routine which are presented to us so nicely. But they become mundane and somehow we start doing it just out of habit. That's clearly not why we begin. Thank god! I realised the importance of living in the "here and now". This is lovely. Now I wake up by asking myself how I feel and what should I do today? I think it's working. Every day is different but intentional. I feel like my life is in my control. Thank you for busting the biggest myth. And I love your content. It's productive. Good luck! ❤

Thank you for this video. I have been putting so much pressure on myself about my morning routine and this helped me to see it doesn't have to be so rigid. Sometimes I might do it, sometimes I am excited and called to work first thing, honoring this is important. Life will not be one way and being able to flow with what is best in that moment is important.

The problem with morning routines and all the fads/gimmicks they entail is that those pursuing these are often pursuing them in the absence of actually doing the things that really matter most for success or progress towards their goals i.e. WORK. Sure, some of these can occasionally facilitate this, but most of the time they're just a distraction that help you kid yourself you're on top of things.

This was exactly what I needed to watch, thank you Matt. I was so rigid in my morning routine I would end up not being productive once my morning routine was over, procrastination would take over. These days I just get straight into it after meditating. Keep up the great story telling, look forward to what you have in store for us :)

I have been viewing your channel for more than a year but this is the first time I am going to comment and the reason is that I found the exact situation with myself. I woke up every day to follow my morning routine and then I feel like doing nothing after that. Thanks, @mattdavella for creating this video, you just helped me figure out my current situation.

I stopped to try all of these self help rituals like meditating, journaling, jogging in the morning, etc and feel so much more free and calm, because I don’t have the burden to force myself everyday to do stuff I actually don’t enjoy. I find myself to be much more relaxed now and productive. All of these activities self help promotes are just too overwhelming i.m.o. and it’s hard to be happy and productive when you are constantly reminded, that after your actual work is done, the self help work starts. An example of something I absolutely hate are cold showers, but self help promotes it like a golden grail as many other things. I changed all of this 3 weeks ago and only do the things I don’t have a problem with doing. I do what I want, but I still get my actual work done and I have to say I never felt more good about my day. I now think, that self help is some kind of pseudo productivity, where you do the self help stuff, but still procrastinate on the actual work you want to do, because the amount of will power you have to put into things like cold showers, etc. are depleting your mental capacity to get to your actual work. At least it was in my case. I stopped watching self help videos and find myself much more relaxed and happy and now I don’t actually care how fast I will progress in my life if I get there at least some day. I like going to the gym, but when I don’t feel like going I just don’t. The only thing I want to actually hustle on is my work and nothing else and forcing myself to the gym just makes me annoyed even when I‘m done. Maybe it‘ll take me half a year or a year longer to achieve my dream body, but if I‘m not having fun on the journey, then what‘s the point

The thing is, self help advice is just advice. It’s stuff that works or has worked for the people telling you to do it. But it doesn’t work for everyone. I think it’s good that you have found what is actually beneficial for you and what isn’t! We only have so much mental energy per day and that’s best used accomplishing things that matter, not forcing yourself to take a cold shower. The thing that’s important not to miss though is that a lot of the self help stuff is actually training your brain to enjoy or atleast become accustomed to doing things that are not easy. Basically, having the mental fortitude to force yourself to take a cold shower is the benefit of the cold shower, not the water temperature. All of those things when done with understanding actually increase an individuals capacity, endurance, and motivation. But everything should be done in moderation.

So glad you made this video. I too have found myself going straight to my desk lately with a cup of my favourite tea (not the one I'm supposed to drink for health benefits). I'm simply more switched on straight out of bed, so thats the best time to get into the more challenging tasks of the day. All of those other mindfulness practices are better left for the lunch break, where I need a moment to stop and rejuvenate.

The thoughtfulness, insightful ness, and intelligence of the comments here gives me a renewed sense of hope about human beings. Each of us is working out how we want to make the most out of life, feel good, and be our best selves - whether through a rigorous routine or choosing gentleness with ourselves. The discussion alone here is so valuable to me. To witness the support people give each other - to complete strangers - also inspiring. Thank you.

The thing about morning routines people don’t tell you is that there is still a finite amount of time you have in the day to get things done unless you sacrifice sleep. Also if you are unable to do the things you want because of fatigue, what’s your work to break balance like? Are you making time to decompress, eating correctly. In the end it’s all about general wellness, not time specific hours. The solution is most likely a lot more simple than you think.

Thank you so much for this video! I've always been obsessed with morning and night routines, watching a billion of them on KZfaq and trying to finger the best one for me. I did the whole journaling and meditation thing for some time, but after a while it just felt like a chore most days. And I didn't feel like I had time every single day to meditate. I always felt like if i didn't follow the perfect morning routine, my life would always be fucked up, but that's why I'm so grateful for this video. Up until now, I completely forgot why I I thought they were necessary in the first place: to help me feel better throughout the day and get through my tasks easier. Achieving that doesn't have to be a 7 step morning routine, it can just be a couple of stretches, an affirmation and coffee IN SLOW MOTION to do the trick. It's as simple as that and I'm shaking my head right now realising all the nonsense I've been thinking for over 2 years.

The end has me feeling like I just got Rick Roll’d!!!! Lol!!! Nonetheless this video was timely for me. I’ve been thrown off my morning routine since the lockdowns started. And this was after taking several months to get into a decent morning routine while recovering from several major surguries. While I’ve gotten parts of my routine back in place its not like it was before COVID. And after watching the video I’m thinking maybe it isn’t supposed to go back to the way it was before.
