Good for you dark skin was the first and only skin complexion for a long time on earth remember it’s an inferiority complex if societies put you down for because you are not light which let’s be real is you don’t have white skin. If you are light that does not end the racism you can experience yet people go to the beech sun bathe spend lots of money on sun beds to have darker skin but still are racist to black skin because they feel inferior, so they project there feelings of inferiority and jealousy onto you so they feel temporarily less insecure.

Historically speaking pre-colonial Filipinos, excluding the Aetas, have always prefered lighter and fairer skin, the Binukot is an example. As for why they prefered said skin tone, the very same reason with the Europeans, the Chinese, the Japanese and the rest of Southeast Asia, to destinguish the nobles and elites from commoners. The racism part came later on.

Not really. Lapu Lapu and his clansmen have been described as darker than a fair skin Malayan by one of Magellan's captains. In fact if we use the Malayan Magellan brought to the Philippines then Lapu Lapu (who's real name is still unknown since Pigafetta was writing what it sounds like) would be brown skin. In modern historians agree that Lapulapu real name might be Pulapu

Glad you also mentioned that. Not only Italians but the Irish as well. Most of the American priests who took over of the churches in the Philippines were Irish-American.

Peter Paul Lee lol look up ‘ violence against women in the Philippines ‘ “Spain ruled the Philippines for over 333 years where the Spaniards treated both men and women poorly. The Spaniards saw the Filipinos as 'indios', seeing themselves as of higher social standing than the natives. In the process of colonization, the Spaniards harmed and committed several acts of violence against Filipino women” “With the Spaniards taking control of all aspects of Philippine society, the identity of the Filipino woman as a woman of strength and power was soon forgotten. The Spaniards created a new image of the ideal Filipino woman. The ideal Filipino woman was someone who was overly religious, submissive, and obedient.”

Regardles of skin color, we should not let it be the complete definition of what makes someone Filipino. There are Filipinoes who are lighter skin than the Filipinoes who live in other countries, but culture wise they are more Filipino since they keep their culture in tact. Appearance is not everything, sometimes the darker skinned Filipinos know nothing about the Philippines due to being born outside of the Philippines.
@harveyblackwood3563

Skin color being a definition of a race is an American influence. Most Filipinos these days decided to jump into the issue of skin color which the black Americans started. Our issue is mostly about colorism but you don't see any dark-skinned Filipino getting murdered or arrested because of their skin color unlike in America. Honestly, Filipinos should wake up and start thinking that the world doesn't revolve around America only.

the real Filipinos Are the "Indios" or the "dark skinned" The term "Filipino" are used as to distinguish Spanish people born in the Philippine Isles and was only used recently in the commonwealth period to call both the indios and of kastila heritage. personally, I find the darkness of our skin as something more desirable than becoming white. the darkness is proof of hard work and dedication and perseverance. just keep in mind that the media are showing us fantasy and not reality.
@maq4711

The real, dark Filipinos are no longer "Indios", because "Indios" are now defined by Philippine society as pale complexion, not dark complexion. A dark complexion means Aeta. Even if Filipinos are not tribal, darkness = Aeta. Even if many Filipinos are brown in the U.S., these Filipinos are not brown in the Philippines, but are black.

Indio was a racial slur used by the Spaniards to dark skinned people. It literally means "Indian" also, this term came later on in the Philippines, the native Americans were the first one to be labelled by this after they were mistaken as Indians due to their skin.

There's a very special relationship between African American men who have been loving Filipino women for over 100 years and also the relationship between African American and Filipino people go back over 100 years but the pale face didn't want you to know that but that the true. I FEEL SORRY FOR THESE PEOPLE”: AFRICAN AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN THE PHILIPPINE-AMERICAN WAR, 1899-1902 What you didn't know that our relationship goes back to Philippine-American war THE 19TH-CENTURY AFRICAN-AMERICAN SOLDIER WHO FOUGHT FOR FILIPINO LIBERATION Angry at the Treatment of Blacks in the US, in 1899 David Fagan Deserted His Regiment and Became a Household Name Back HomeIn 1899, during a campaign on the island of Luzon to entrap the Filipino revolutionary president Emilio Aguinaldo, a 21-year-old buffalo soldier named David Fagen deserted from the American army. He wasn’t homesick. Young Fagen decided to join the Filipino revolutionaries and quickly took up arms against his former countrymen. In time, he became a guerrilla leader of such renown that his Filipino fighters called him “General Fagen.”Fagen enjoyed a good time. He was a master of stud poker, having regularly relieved his fellow soldiers of several hundred dollars on payday. He was fond of carousals, played the guitar, and lived in the camp with his Filipino wife. He was “often amusing” and voluble, supremely confident, and a natural leader. Fagen even inspired mystery, and controversy, in matters of death. With a reward on his head, he retreated to the desolate Pacific coast. In December 1901, a Filipino hunting party brought in a moldering head and Fagen’s effects, claiming they had killed the renegade.The army announced Fagen’s death and hundreds of newspapers covered the story. Only the English-language Manila American made a mockery of the Army’s account of Fagen’s killing, but that story went unreported in America and was entirely overlooked until I recently discovered it. In the end, Fagen was not a central military player in the war; the region where he fought was of secondary importance in terms of the larger struggle. But he is important as an African-American who took up arms against a country racist to the core and bent on empire at the expense of a dark-skinned people. As a revolutionary officer and later as a bandit leader, Fagen confounded the American whites. He not only challenged their supremacist assumptions; he also mocked them, defiant in the face of the noose and the burning stake. Cut and paste this Marpessa Dawn. Before; Beveryly Johnson, Halle Berry, Rhinna, Beyonce, there was Marpessa Dawn. Filipino father and black mother. Filipino men were marrying black woman went it was against the law. In the early 1900’s Filipino men accounted for over half of the interracial marriages. Black people even took Filipino men to court to prevent such marriages.

I’m happy here and I even changed my nationality because I don’t want to be a part of the Philippine ignorant world anymore

Honestly, I thought racism against black or darker skinned people didnt exist here in the Philippines because I never noticed someone get ridiculed and looked down for being black; darker colored people are cool and friendly, same with people with any other color. However, the video did make me realize that people do subtly ridicule dark skinned people especially in the beauty industry. We do sometimes joke that our darker colored friend blends in with the dark, but at the end of the day we just had friendly banter and we see him as a very cool friend and he does sometimes initiates the joke.

I am half white & half filipino and i have noticed so many times how whitewashed most filipinos are, it all comes from the spanish & american colonization there was for centuries a culture where lighter skinned people were more favored than their darker brothers & sisters. .. It's very sad because this brainwashed whitewash mentality still exists to this day. I live in Europe where the majority is white, and almost everyone recognizes my long dark hair, my tan skin & full lips. i was always called an indian "Native-American" or simply the indigenous of the thoroughbred or fullblooded europeans here. But the nice thing about it is that here in Europe this is seen as beautiful & interesting, in contrast to the Philippines or Latin American countries, that's how i experience it myself in life. I still often have this tedious problem when I see Filipino relatives, but especially my own mother, who always says I shouldn't be outside in the sun for so long in the summer, because she thought that my skin would be too dark, and then that people here in europe will be racist to me, and then she always says that the more successful people are always the light skinned ones... Really sad how this brainwashing destroys our true pride & identity... I am proud of my filipino indigenous roots, and to all indigenous ethnic groups & tribes of the philippines' Igorot / Aeta / Negrito / Lumad / etc. and also to our cousins overseas the Native americans from north to south & the pacific islanders. But of course I am also very proud of my Celtic & Germanic roots hell yeah. Don't let it get you down, be 💯% proud of what you are.

Sooooo. First.. the territory we call today known as Philippines is divided into 3 large territories called Luzon , visayas and mindinaoe. The Spaniards only conquered Luzon which is where Manila became a place. The visayas and mindinaoe are UNCONQUERED BY ANY OUTSIDE RACE OR NATION. Just ask the Italians and Spaniards who tried like ferniand megellan. Ohh wait you can’t because they lost the war and died to the visayan tribes who are Pacific Islanders. Luzon the north island and home to tribes with indigenous blood and Asian race mixing aka Tagalog tribes were defeated in war. Tagalog got conquered. Also the first people of the territory known as the Philippines were AFRICAN as scientists Will confirm black people were there first and other groups like austronesians came and bred with the Africans and then you have a new race of brown indigenous people.

My Fililpino mom hated it so much when I teased her on having a flat nose. But she's also the same person that ridicules my dark skin and taught me the idea of beauty, "light skin, tall nose, etc." I'm a grown-up now, I don't do that anymore. But still, why get offended to a 6 year old when she was the one teaching me that mindset in the first place?

Wala kayong maisip kundi manggaya "black lives matter" eh brown kaming pilipino excuse po, pag pango ka o maitim ka hindi bullying tawag dun. Kasi we don't say it seriously, biro man o tukso its a compliment of identities bilang pinoy parang example; kamusta ka na kulot ang taba mu ngayon mukhang pumuputi Ka ata painom Ka naman... Tangaka pag masyado kang sensitive kasi pwede mu rin gawin yung ginagawa nya pero bullying is made up by the sensitive rich people out side Philippines. Kasi nagpapaka kahit wala sa itsura..
