In today's session we explain the technique and include a great drill, helping you to use serve plus one in your game
Anatomy:
Grip: The player can use either an Eastern or a semi-Western grip for the neutral stance forehand. The Western grip, in particular, is commonly used by players who prefer more topspin on their shots. It involves placing the base knuckle of the index finger on the fifth bevel of the racket handle, which promotes a more extreme grip position.
Arm and Shoulder: The upper arm, forearm, and shoulder work together to generate power and control. Regardless of the grip chosen, the arm should be relaxed yet engaged, allowing for fluid movement and racket acceleration.
Core Stability: Strong core muscles provide stability and help transfer energy from the lower body to the upper body during the shot. A stable core improves balance and control.
Physics:
Newton's Laws: Understanding and applying Newton's laws of motion is crucial. The player needs to generate force by pushing off the ground, transfer it through the body and arm, and finally transfer it to the ball.
Transfer of Momentum: Generating angular momentum through proper body rotation and weight transfer is vital. The player should initiate the shot by rotating the hips and shoulders, transferring momentum from the lower body to the upper body and arm.
Center of Mass: The player should maintain a stable center of mass throughout the shot to optimize balance, control, and power. Shifting weight from the back foot to the front foot during the stroke helps generate power.
Biomechanics:
Stance and Footwork: The player starts in a balanced neutral stance, with feet shoulder-width apart. As the shot is initiated, the player takes a small step with the front foot and rotates the hips and shoulders, positioning the body to face the net.
Coil and Uncoil: Coiling refers to the rotation of the hips and shoulders away from the net, while uncoiling involves the rapid rotation back towards the net during the swing. This sequential movement generates power.
Racket Path and Follow-through: The player should swing the racket on a slightly diagonal path, brushing the back of the ball with topspin. The follow-through should extend across the body, promoting racket acceleration and control.
