Sooner or later, everyone will find themselves in that split-second instant where things go wrong, and your reaction time and technique will make the difference between a painful and costly crash, or just an adrenaline spike and a great story.
These techniques are just simple ways to implant into your memory, and place within your subconscious, a way to avoid if possible, or handle, problems that cause a loss of control of the board, without even falling off the board. If you do fall, your body will be in a better position to execute a run-out or fall technique.
This may bore advanced riders. If this bores you, good for you. If you are a new rider or are thinking of buying a board or have already ordered your board, this is for you. Safety first. Go into this new adventure prepared. Gear up, and ride on!

Cool move, I'll give it a try. Because the trick is to not fall. :D

Great advice. A body action that you do when dodging the bullet is immediately moving your arms out. I know it seems obvious, but beginner riders sometimes leave their arms down and do not use them for balance.

Yes, great. Riding low with bended knees is def most stable. My issue has been trying to maintain that for a 5-10 mile ride. My thighs burn by mile 3 though! I try and find long stretches of smooth road I am familiar with to ride straighter to relax the knees and thighs. Then get back to a lower stance with bended knees. However, I like the idea of just paying more attention and just being ready to immediately drop like you showed. I have caught myself and avoided falling doing just that by instinct but got lucky really. Going to try and be more intentional with this move now. Thanks!

Michael McAdams you don’t need to be that low all the time, though that would be good exercise. I always have a little bend, but not directly equal, more like front hip forward, which bends the back leg a little more, and sets you perfectly to correct a nose dip.

Hi Chris, great to see another video from you, and this was great advice. Scanning was too. Another thing that I suggest is to immediately try to slow down as soon if possible as you feel your board starting to wobble.

@@Onewheeel Thanks for taking the time to reply! I personally would like to know more about custom shaping, how to set my board up better for different riding conditions, etc. I ride primarily on the street, any a lot of my first falls were on things like gnarly gaps between where the pavement from the road didn't line up with where the concrete started on the sidewalk, or nasty road bumps. You covered some of that in this very video! I'm going to practice dodging bullets today, enjoy some of this beautiful weather. Bicycling pretty much dominates the roads in my city, and I'm not exactly sure how I'm supposed to share the road with them, since I don't bike and don't know whether they pass on the left, the right, or both. 🤷🏻‍♂️ They generally do ride faster than my cruising speed, and I'm just not sure how to use the same paths without being overly stressed about it. There are times when I've been riding in heavy winds, uphill, or a combination of the two, and next thing I know I'm going way faster than I planned on, and not sure if I'm going to feel the pushback because the wind knocking the board around. So any tips just about riding in inclement weather would be cool. I love your videos, Chris. You were the first Onewheel KZfaqr that I found when I got my XR, and they're just all so dope. The instructive ones are where you really shine. You can't teach just fully sending it though! 😹 I know other people have done it, but you could probably do it better, but a video where you do the fancy dismount and fancy jump mounting would be awesome. I still practice those hip thrusts to prepare for nosedives that you show in your fang video. I really appreciate your videos, and how you don't give me useless product schills in exchange for free gear. 💯 But if you ever did feeling like doing some product reviews or gear rundowns, the ones I would like to see are for the cameras that you hold on a stick, either GoPro or insta 360, I think it's called. It would be fun to record my rides like I see a lot of people doing. Thanks again for taking the time to write me back! I share your videos often with everyone who just picks up their shiny Onewheel. It's pretty obvious that your style appeals to people like myself, who came from a skateboarding background. I don't know if you've slid these things yet, but if you find a nice plastic curb or ledge on Amazon that would be good for practice, and want to review that, it would be dooope. Or an appropriate fun box for noseslides and bonk ramps, that can be successful as well. I'm sure that's far more stuff than you really wanted in a response, lol, but it's not every day that Chris Richardson replies to you on KZfaq. 😹 Stay safe, my friend. Stay healthy. Remain stoked! 🔥➖🔘➖🔥

Good afternoon Chris. Thank you for these helpful and insightful tips for riders. I'm new to Onewheel (XR scheduled for delivery next week) and I've been scouring the net for tips and advice in preparation. Can totally relate to ABS as an avid motorcyclist, and look forward to implementing these tools when I begin Onewheeling. Thanks for the tips. Take care.

"Truncated-dome pads are Dangerous"! Hi Chris I wish you would do a Video on ADA Truncated-dome pads and the Dangers of them and see if we can work up a Petition to remove them. I live in Winter Garden, Florida. We have a Bike Trail that Runs through our Town Called the West Orange Trail. I have ridden over these Truncated-dome pads at Street Crossings on the Trail on a Onewheel many of times. Well today one Got me. For no Apparent Reason I crossed one and my Onewheel Nosedived and I went flying into the Asphalt. I have seen other Children on small bikes and on Rollerblades leave Flesh on the Pavement because of the Truncated-dome pads. I have taken a another Dive another day before because of the angle of the Rain Gutter was so steep, then the Truncated-dome pads at a different Street Crossing. I asked people all day today when have you see a Person with a Red and White Cane at these Crosswalks or on the West Orange Trail, the answer was NEVER! Today I left Flesh on the Asphalt and a very bruised Hip. I was wearing all my Safety Pads and a Helmet. Thank God I was wearing the Helmet because I smacked my head also. I found a Director of Risk Management Services with an Insurance agency. He says that the Cure is worse than the Problem. He said the Elderly are affected a lot by the ADA Truncated-dome pads because they Shuffle their feet sometimes to keep from falling, and when they hit the ADA Truncated-dome pads they trip. He also said, "It’s going to take a movement get these removed, and it will have to have the support by people in DC I suspect. I am sure that there is a lobby from the manufacturers that would try to stop it, because they are making a boatload. Let me know what you think Chris.

ADA Truncated-dome pads are the Rubber Pads at the end of a Sidewalk, they have Dome shaped Bumps. They are to help Blind People know that something is changing in the Path they are on. I think there is still a way to help people that are Blind to know they are coming to an Intersection or a change in the path. I read another story of a lady that turned over in her wheelChair because of a Truncated-dome pad coming out of a Store. I have a friend that is Blind so don't get me wrong on this. There has to be a better way that is safe for everyone, not just one Disability, or causing someone to end up with a Disability.

Another way to dodge the bullet is to wear safety gear. If (when) you do fall, you will not leave your knee, elbow, skull, or wrist meat on the ground.

I don't usually have a Problem ether. What I found was, I was Riding the Wave, Just Floating along and when I hit them they caused my board to slow down throwing my Balance forward, the Fangs must have grabbed the Bumps and I was in a Nosedive. It happened so fast, I should have Dropped and dodged the Bullet. If I would have had time to Dodge the Bullet maybe my Crash would have not been a SPAT and would have been a fast Roll. From another time it was the same thing. I went over them causing the board to slow down, my balance went forward and I was able to ride the Fangs until I hit the Grass, then SPLAT. I thank you for your thoughts on this and your experience. Maybe I need to adjust my Stance or be aware of what my Stance is. Any Ideas? Robert
