I think what makes this a masters-level final jeopardy question compared to the everyday game is that once you come up with the novel, the author is still difficult (at least for me, I remembered only that he was French), and that may have proven true for the contestants as well.

After thinking on it, I knew the book and the author. My only problem would be I would probably spell the surname wrong. Pierre Bouille?

Country western music isn’t usually the music genre that Jeopardy contestants study… and the clue-writers know that.

@fiona - a key moment in sartre’s memoir “words” was at the zoo - but it was about how he saw a giraffe for the first time and realized that he thought he’d known what a giraffe was but the experience of a giraffe was overwhelming in comparison to what he’d learned in books. So I was for a moment considering this path due to “zoo” but rejected it due to apes, and apes (and their human like expressions) led me to “planet of” and it took just another moment to remember boulle. The category title was almost irrelevant - boulle isn’t among the 50 French authors of the 20th century that anyone would list.

@@luuduonghy659 The remaining players will not be diverse enough. The remaining episodes should be canceled the series must replace James and Matt with more appropriate non-binary things/theys/thems/dragons.

at least they're not dumb enough to risk a substantial amount knowing the answer was wrong; i can't tell you how many times i've seen that & it's just baffling

You're misunderstanding the order of operations here. During the commercial break after they reveal the category, *that* is when the wager is placed. Only afterwards do they actually see the clue.
