He could have easily still lost. He quite reasonably chose to wager the extra dollar to guarantee himself a win with a correct answer, even if Christine doubled up. Contestants have indicated it went in effect right after the 2014 tournament of champions, but there is admittedly no statement on the Jeopardy! website as to the exact effective date. He bet on the assumption that Christine would bet to double her money (giving her $28,000 with a correct answer) and he would end up with $28,001 if he, too, got the correct response. Would be better titled "Best Jeopardy Final Bid Ever" --- great bid by Christine
@jackmessick28693 жыл бұрын
If you are in second or third place, you need to figure out how much the leader will bid to win (the leader will have to bid enough to have one dollar more than double the second place total at the end of Double Jeopardy). So the only way you will win is if the leader is wrong and you respond correctly. So only bid enough so that if he/she is wrong and you are right, you win. Sometimes, that means a bid of zero, as you saw here. In this example she knew that he would bid $7001 to guarantee a win at a final total of $28001. If he responds correctly, then no one beats him, no matter how correct you are. But, if he is incorrect, his score falls to $13999. So she knew that she could bid zero and beat him. She also realized that she would automatically beat the third place, since she had more than double the winnings of the third place finisher.
@axelkyster26423 жыл бұрын
@grizzly adams Well....NO. The person in third RARELY would win if they bid nothing. Most of the time they have already been beaten. If it's a "runaway", then they are already beaten. If they less than half of what the leader has (most of the time...), they've already been beaten. OCCASIONALLY, there is a perfect storm where the third-place player can pass BOTH of the other two by betting nothing, but that means BOTH of the top two players will have to be wrong...and OVERBET. This is quite rare.
@axelkyster26423 жыл бұрын
@grizzly adams That's all well and good...for traditional game theory....whatever you think that might be. Jeopardy is not JUST about game theory, although many "Arthur and James come latelies" have convinced Jeopardy newbies that it is. You ABSOLUTELY cannot EVER assume (you've made one of yourself here already..) that BOTH players ahead of you will be incorrect. In some other "game-theory" scenario, that might be the proper play. There's a reason you're in third place...the other players were better than you. In Jeopardy, the best players RARELY miss. There were many nights when Ken or James missed NO questions... Game theory cannot prevail over knowledge and speed. It's that simple.
@axelkyster26423 жыл бұрын
@grizzly adams But let's clarify a few other things: IF you have perfect storm of a score - AND you can win by betting nothing and (misguidedly) HOPING that both of the better players will miss...then yes, stand pat...and keep hoping and praying. I did not say that the third-place player should bet everything. It probably should, and DOES happen rarely. But most of those who bet everything cannot mathematically win...or sometimes even get into second. Even if they do it too much for your liking...most of the time it just doesn't matter...so they should just do what they want. Next...if you cannot win the game...but betting everything might get you into second place and $1,000 more for your troubles...then that is probably the right play. NOTHING that THIS third-place player could have done would have helped her win, EXCEPT for the other two players screwing up badly - both the Q/A AND the betting.
@axelkyster26423 жыл бұрын

@sethh5106 Жыл бұрын
Yes, Taarak, this is exactly my thought. 7k wouldve minimized risk. I only do 7001 in this circumstance if it were among my strongest categories, and clearly this wasnt his if he knew so little to know that DiCaprio hadnt to that point won even 1 best actor. 7k at least gets you to sudden death unless you get it wrong and she bids nonzero and gets it right. You cannot be in the lead, get the Final Jeopardy question correct, and lose. Now THAT would be embarrassing.

A number of players have been in first and not covered the second place player's total and have won. You have to also decide how well you know the category. Some players have also not covered the second place player's total and gotten the final right and have lost. One player in the College tournament was leading into final jeopardy and bet enough to cover the second place player's total and got it wrong and lost. Her opponent also got it wrong but didn't wager very much. She was so upset that she couldn't face the camera.

JT3151 He doesn't have to bet $7,001. Any bet of $0 to $6,999 and he wins. $7,000 and he ties and goes into sudden death. Anything higher and he loses. You also have to gauge your own comfort level with the category. If she bets it all and she loses if it is wrong. You don't have to assume another player gets it right because often they don't.

@brodiebutland12115 жыл бұрын
This is a very silly loss under the old rules of Jeopardy (in effect when this game occurred), where in the event of a tie both contestants came back the next day. Arthur Chu always bet for the tie rather than the win precisely because of this. So there's no reason why Brian should have bet $7,001--if he bet $7,000, he would have walked away with money even if he got the question wrong. His $7,001 bet unnecessarily created a chance to lose, while offering no reasonably likely winning chances that he otherwise wouldn't have. That said, the Jeopardy rules have since changed, and now a tiebreaker is required in the event of a tie after Final Jeopardy. Under the new rules, Brian's wager might have been justifiable...just a question of whether you go for the win now, or you risk going to a tie-breaker and having the game revolve around one question.
@michaelhunt3724 жыл бұрын
From contestant posts on reddit and JBoardtv, it seems the new rule actually took effect in Nov. right after the 2014 TOC, which was before this game. Though, it was not confirmed until Feb. 2016 and no exact effective date was given. But, regardless, you did a great job showing the profound effect the new rules have in this scenario.

that's not right. Brian was betting to beat Christine if they both got it right and she bet it all. He would have finished with 28,001 to her 28,000. That said - if he'd bet exactly 7,000 he still would have tied her in that scenario, and also in the scenario that actually happened. A bet of 6,999 would only have paid off in the instance where she bet zero, and they both got it wrong. If she'd bet everything, he bet 6,999 and they both got it right (which is actually more probable than both being wrong), he would have lost by a dollar (28,000 to 27,999). *That* would have been embarrassing.

It's important to know that the rules have changed as to what happens in the case of a tie. Under the current rules, the guy's bet makes sense, as it's the minimum amount that will guarantee him victory should they both get the answer correct (the most likely scenario). However, back in the day a tie for first place meant that both people won, and both came back the next day. There was no toss-up question for the win in those days. So a bet of 7000 in this case would have guaranteed him at least a tie for the win in both the correct-correct and the incorrect-incorrect scenarios. Most contestants would bet the extra dollar as a matter of course, which at the time seemed a bit dickish to me, but in this specific scenario (having exactly 1.5x the closest competitor's score) it turned out to be literally self-defeating.
@markhunter85542 жыл бұрын

It is a little embarrassing. You see, if he had thought about it he would have realized that the best the women could have done was get to $28,000 - so if he bets $7000 and wins he also get's to $28,000 and they both win. No harm there, they both keep the money they won and they both return for the next game. But, if he bet's $7000 and loses he falls to $14,000 which is what his opponent has. So, if he's wrong she has to be right and bet something for her to win outright. It was a failure to think clearly about what he was doing and it was embarrassing. I mean, it's not rocket science, just think for a minute and you realize the proper bet is $7000 not $7001.
@Tom-dt4ic6 жыл бұрын
Excellent analysis. 2/3rds is the cut off. If you finish in first place and your second place opponent has less than 2/3rds of your total then you need only to bet enough to beat them if they bet everything and it's an easy question you both get. In this scenario the first place finisher would also be covered if it's a hard question they both miss because the first place finisher would not go below the second place finisher's total even if the second place person bets nothing. However if your opponent has more than two thirds of your total, or in this case exactly two thirds, then you could loss, as this guy did, to a crafty second place opponent betting nothing if you bet to win outright. He should have gone for the tie, not the knockout.

Her strategy was that she needed him to be wrong to win. If they were both right, he’d win. If he was right, and she wasn’t, he’d win. However, the benefit to how she bet was solely to to make sure it was all on him. She knew he’d bet at least $7,001 to get up to $28,001. She figured her betting anything would actually hurt her chances as it would likely mean that if they both got it wrong, he’d still win. So, instead of her needing to be right, and him needing to be wrong for her to win, she smartly did her math and knew betting nothing was the best strategy and improved her odds greatly of winning the game since it left it all up to him being right or wrong.
