So in the middle of a combat zone having no idea of what is going on or what resources the "bad guy" has, both the captain and the first officer leave the ship? WTF! THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN!! If you are going to write military fiction do some research on how the military operates. And that ignores all the other bad decisions Carter makes prior to that point that would have him looking at a court martial when he gets back home.
