I use the SP53 for coconuts here in the Philippines. I can cut then pry the husk. Tried thinner blades but can't pry on the husk like that quarter inch steel can. I call it my coconut killer!!! I also use the SP8 on coconuts but poking holes to get the water out I need a pointed blade. I also used a WorkSharp Ken Onion and re-profiled the edge to a 25 degree convex grind. Now it's even sharper. I will be getting the Esee Junglas for bamboo but that's a luxury. I got a Condor Mini Duku Parang for bamboo and it works fantastic.

My friend Realbigmonkey suggested the SP-53, he told me a Saber Grind chops like an axe, where the Flat Grind slices more like a machete, I'm so glad I listened, even though I almost got the SP-52, because it's a little lighter, and it splits wood better, I called it a shoulder, but regardless, Thank You so much for showing this video, it beats my post's hand's down, great video.

Isn't she beautiful! Reallybig monkey1 loves this knife, too. I asked my husband for this for my 75th birthday -- and he got it for me. I don't carry a pistol in our RV (I do all the driving) but I keep this baby on my right side, handy, in the RV on the road. You muscular guys chop away with it, but I don't have that arm strength anymore. Nevertheless, the SP53 will work hard for me. To say nothing about how scary-looking it is! With this thing and a Mora, I'm set. Love it!

The best chopper I've had to date has been TOPS POWER EAGLE 12, love to see a head to head with this one in the future! It's also the only full flat ground chopper I've seen that worked. Hey Aaron back from the future again. I ended up buying this a couple months ago and although I do like it a lot (just had it out today) I'm not having the ease that you are AND I find that the edge dulls rather quickly, certainly faster than 1095. I use the work sharp Ken Onion edition which makes this knife a breeze to sharpen. I guess maybe I'm using the wrong angle, I do it totally freehand. Good video, talk to you soon. Mike

I'm glad I got this video again, for the $$$ it's still my favorite chopper, I've used my BK-9 and put it up against my Gen2 SP-51 it was close, but my SP-53 is my favorite, great knife. The only thing I can add is, it seems a higher carbon steel similar to the 5160 which is the 52100 Ballbearing Steel does hold a little better edge retention and in a well designed knife like my Rodent 9 preforms very well and keeps up with the SP-53, but if I'm going to process alot of wood for a fire, I will take my SP-53 to do the job, like I said for the $$$ it's one of the best chopper's in my opinion.

Say Heah Aaron, Yup, The O. K. C. GEN2 SP-53 is still my Fav's Chopper's for that $$$. Infact I still team it with my Ranger T. F. I. (Tactical Force Infidel) It's one of my Cold weather combo when wood processing is needed to stay warm. Although when I first bought my Ranger T. F. I. it was sold as a Survival Tactical and Bush Craft Knife with a 58 HRC. At tgat hardness some said it chipped. Although I never had that problem. So, Yeah, I still love that combo. Infact at that time I also bought my Ranger Afghan and my Ranger RD-9 both in the 5160 with orange G-10 Handles that I sanded very lightly to fit my hand perfectly. Infact I seen a Ranger Afghan sell for $350.00 go figure.,,. p

I've got several of the SP line knives including the 53. For the money they can't be beat imo. I've only got a couple blades that can out chop the 53. But to be fair they have slightly longer blades. One is a kukri from Nepal and the other is the Cold Steel chaos kukri. My 53 came fairly dull as far as what I'm used to from Ontario but it was plenty sharp enough to limb two big oaks that got blown over blocking my driveway. I used nothing but an axe, a Cold Steel All Terrain Chopper and my 53 to remove them. When I was done the 53 was still almost as sharp as when I got it. If you really want to make your 53 shine take a file to it and thin the edge a bit. I should have done this before tackling the big oaks but wanted to test the factory edge first. After I thinned the edge the 53 was a different beast and chops way better and now it's way more versatile for other tasks as well.
@jakebarnes3054
@jakebarnes3054 4 жыл бұрын
I've done that on my KA-BAR cutlass, but noticed it's weaker and doesn't hold an edge as well. Is that down to just the steel and heat treat do you think? My KA-BAR is shaving sharp so maybe that's why and Reallybigmonkey1 says he is just fine having used his for 3 years and no sharpening or reprofiling.
@hildolfrdraugadrottin7279
@hildolfrdraugadrottin7279 4 жыл бұрын
@@jakebarnes3054 I don't own the KA-BAR but it very well could be the tempering. Many knife companies give these big chopper type blades a softer temper which makes them tougher and less likely to chip out but will also cause it to dull faster. I may be wrong, but if I remember correctly the KA-BAR has slightly thinner blade stock than the SP53 which is around a 1/4" thick so thinning it especially to razor sharpness will also effect its edge holding ability. Personally I'd rather have to sharpen more often and gain some performance with my blades. I liked my old KA-BAR fighting knife and if the cutlass is of the same quality it's a nice knife too I imagine. When I first got my 53 I used it to limb two big oak trees that fell across my driveway and it still had a decent edge for that type of work when I finished. Now that I've thinned it I'll be sharpening it more often when chopping hardwood but I'd rather have it sharper for other tasks myself. It's a worthwhile compromise imo.
@jakebarnes3054
@jakebarnes3054 4 жыл бұрын
@@hildolfrdraugadrottin7279 yeah, the 53 is significantly thicker. How sharp, roughly, is sharp enough for hard wear in the woods without making it prone to dulling?
@hildolfrdraugadrottin7279
@hildolfrdraugadrottin7279 4 жыл бұрын
@@jakebarnes3054 I just sharpen my choppers enough to make them shave. If they are extremely thick I'll thin them enough to be able to slice reasonably well. That does effect their ability to hold an edge during hard chopping. The way I look at is I may have to sharpen more but while chopping I make deeper cuts so I'm getting more done on less energy. It takes a lot less energy to sharpen a blade than chopping wood so I would say it's worth sharpening a little more often. In the field I just file sharpen and when I'm at home or in camp I'll put a polished edge back on my blades. To be honest making a wood processing tool extremely sharp is actually a waste of time but I don't mind wasting the time when I'm not working with it. I find all these KZfaq reviewers with new looking blades claiming to have put them to the test laughable and there's a lot of them. While it true that someone with experience can tell if a blade cuts well doesn't take actually using them a lot. But knowing how well they perform in the long run does and imo that's what I'm looking for in a review.
@jakebarnes3054
@jakebarnes3054 4 жыл бұрын
@@hildolfrdraugadrottin7279 yeah, the factory edge left a lot to be desired. Now it's much better. I agree, if you've got a field sharpener it's fine and during a survival scenario each swing counts- rather chop once to cut a branch than two or three times, that's calories wasted.

The rind on the tip of mine was 90 degrees. All they need is a jig. They don't give a shit! I have seen them advertised at £140 pounds. Mine was &73 . The rtak was so bad at the tip ontario sent me another. One thing with their micarter handle scale versions they leave enough material so you can change it to fit your hand.Or you can spend even more money for custom scales. But the tang is still pretty wide. Ok for big hands but custom it yourself, by filing a bit of at a time. I have done several now. I gave thesp 53 a very nice convex edge. Now it really cuts, and I have not reshaped it yet. I find it works better with a saber grip. Will put g10 on mine for the scales enclosed tang and let the back of the scales along the back gradually slope back. And a small thumbs ramp at the front of the scales with small rounded gimping. Did it to my sp52 and what a difference! Keep it up my friend and well done.

mykhal That would be a good comparison. I have both, but I have yet to critique them in such detail. Personally, in a survival situation, I would trust the SP53. Because of its thickness it will endure more abuse in my opinion. Also, it's made in the USA as opposed to the Ka-Bar Cutlass, if you're a "buy American" type.

Alrighty, I was thinking SP-8 or SP-51 for a straight blade to add to my gear set, but I like curved blades as well.

For less weight I can do more, safer, expending less energy by carrying a bushcraft knife, hatchet and folding saw. Can you field dress a squirrel with that? How about removing ticks or splinters?

On knives that are going to be doing more cutting slicing tasks I prefer FFG, for large batoners and choppers the Saber grind has proved to do a lot better. So the ESEE6 FFG is perfect for its size. A much bigger blade and I would want a saber grind.
