I've been poking around at some of your older vids. You do some good, practical vids. Thanks much and have a happy new year.

If you ever watch old movies, look up Bombers B-52 (1957) and you will see a spax pulled out for an inflight emergency fire. I believe this tools original usage was for cutting yourself out of a plane wreck. I was surprised to see it there, but there it was.

The SPAX absolutely has a history as a weapon. To that point, it was standard issue to the mechanized Infantry, at least of the 4th ID. The hex is useful for breaking Bradley tracks, the breaker bar for opening your door against your will, a purpose I used it for many times in Iraq, and the edge is great for opening you. To say that its less intimidating to someone, in my experience, is off.

I own the older CS Kukri machete, really thin, but ok as a machete. Did your kukri come with an edge? Or did you have to grind one on it? I own the SPAX also, great work horse. Really good video.

The spax sp16 is the better overall tool of those two presented. It is like a mini tomahawk almost. Which is great.

Nice comparison, in my view spax has more utility in survival situation...

TO SAFELY SPLIT (down, as opposed to across the grain) SMALL CIRCUMFERENCE WOOD, gently “tap-set” the axe head into the end grain (the axe should be able to hold the wood after setting) then strike the back (poll) of the axe with a stout but manageable branch. Never swing a blade towards your other hand.

look up 13 in 1 multi purpose axe on amazon. hammer, prybar and axe in one solid compact unit

+3Dtimespace its cheap stuff, but for stovaway emergency use its pretty handy. if you have any knowledge on leatherman type multi tools thatd be a nice vid

+3Dtimespace Tell me that's not the cheesy lame one which looks like an overgrown pocketknife. Got a link?
3Dtimespace Oh, the chicom tool, I have some of those around somewhere, they are not all that great but some people like them.

Cold Steel's kukri isn't a real kukri. It's a machete with thin metal. A real kukri made from a quality Nepalese company is much heavier, made out of tool steel and carbon steel. Unless you leave it to rust and you take minimal care of it, it will end up in the hands of your grandchildren, long after you die. Sergeant Dipprasad Pun, the Gurka who held off 30 Taliban by himself carried a real kukri.

I have no idea what type of Nepalese Khukuri you have experience with but my personal experience is that they are excellent tools and very durable. Cold Steel makes a very good machete but their pseudo khukuri the "Ghurka" has a terrible, goopy rubber handle that tears up your hand if you arent wearing gloves and wears quickly anyway. As for the SPAX, Im not sure you gave it a fair shake. The spike is very good for digging, it can be battoned just like a knife, is reasonably okay at detail work and has a good hard rubber handle. That said, it was a decent comparison over all and I too very much like my Cold Steel machetes.

When I was in the Marines, several guys in my unit tried Kurkris from different makers and vendors, and the absolute worst by a wide margin were the actual originals that came in the wood sheaths that had piss cured leather covers with bone handles. Very soft steel and the only ones even remotely usable were reforged in the engineer shop. Evenne then, they just won't hold an edge.

8digitPDX wow, yea I have not ever heard anything even remote to what you just posted but I can say that no one I know personally has had any experience even close to that. Given your clear bias I know this isnt going to be a fruitful discussion, so have a nice day-Im out.
