The OP-Z is out, and it's great. It's early, but a lot of USB MIDI workflows already work great. There's plenty of room to grow though.

Great breakdown and insight about the Retrokits 005 midi hub. It certainly looks like this is one of the best ways to connect various devices to the op-z at the moment. Oh, and thanks for the firmware stamp as well! It makes a big difference when troubleshooting. It looks like TE is releasing updates pretty frequently right now.

@@truecuckoo I need to know exactly which usb mini to usb C cable you used. I've tried several and the OP-Z is not recognizing the Keystep at all. I've updated the firmware in both the OP-Z and the Keystep. I've monkeyed with all the midi settings possible and still nothing. Do I have a defective OP-Z? It works great otherwise.

Yeah I love operating the little thing alone too. But especially sequencing external stuff in finding interesting. And think like having a foot keyboard for visuals :)

Remember class, you can tap on the upper right corner to get the 3 dot menu. Tap on that and you can play with the audio playback speed for this and other videos. Because pot.

Hey Cuckoo, long time watcher, first time writer. Love what you do and your genuine enthusiasm for discovering the intricacies of these wonderful instruments (and sharing your knowledge with us all!). I was wondering if you could follow up this video in regards to usb hubs, specifically if you know of any other hubs that work now and if we can use the usb hubs to simultaneously use midi controllers and record audio and midi via usb simultaneously? Thank you!!

So amazing! Surprised you didn’t feature the op-1 here, I’ve had fun using the op-1 sequencers to drive the op-z via midi. Also trying to sequence the 0-coast via the Kenton, but somehow it doesn’t seem to pick up all the notes op-z is sending.

I am SO happy this thing can host USB midi controllers. I have an Artiphon Instrument 1 and it's a nightmare to setup to use with my hardsynths. To use it with the OP-1 requires TWO midi USB host boxes -- one for output from the Artiphon, and one for input to the OP-1. I already ordered one before watching this video, but now I'm extra excited to hook the Artiphon up to it.

yo cuckoo, can we control the analog four mk2 with the Opz? I have the 2 machines i want to use the super sequencer of opz for control the 4 tracks of mk 2. But when im on ableton all my CC message only control the track 1 of the mk2. Do you have an issue ? Thanks you very much ;P

To have multiple Usb devices work at the same time one could use Retrokits RK-005 that works perfectly for me, even a larger number of usb hubs can be connected to it... give it a try!

Quick hint, cuckoo: On the RK005, you can connect the OP-Z via the USB-Hub as well and power the whole thing with a phone charger or power bank. This way, it will get charged and you don't even necessarily need a powered USB hub. Would be a good way to start a mobile jamming setup. Or you can connect it to your PC or iPad that way to integrate it with your DAW. The RK005 is super neat, thanks for showing that!

Simple question: Can the OP-Z be used as a controller with a DAW? In other words, use it instead of a Korg NanoKey2 or other controller. Also, can I assume its buttons aren't velocity sensitive? Thanks!

Hi Cuckoo, this is a great video! Is it likely that the MIDI/CV module (that you mention is in beta testing) will be good for syncing Pocket Operators with the OP-Z? CV is something I know very little about.

Cuckoo - i love the sequencer on the OPZ and want to use it to control/sequence a drum kit on the Deluge...Is this possible? Like if i have 16 sounds in the Deluge drum kit - can i assign each one to a midi track on the OPZ and use its sequencer to jam each sound on the Deluge?

Thanks for this cuckoo. I have a question about a setup I'm thinking of - I have an OP-Z and want to get something like a Dreadbox Abyss to go along with it. I know I could get an oplab to send midi out of the Z directly, but in theory it seems like I could hook the keystep up to the Z via USB, sync up their sequencers, and then midi out from the keystep to the abyss. Think that would work?

@cuckoomusic hello, thank you for this video, it was very instructive. did you know that you can also connect to the OP-Z midi interface via bluetooth (the phone app do that to operate with op-z, but any bluetooth compatible midi host will work), i successfully connect my mac with op-z via buetooth (use the audio and midi setup app, then open midi studio and use the bluetooth button to discover and connect op-z) there is a lot of latency, but if you want to route some surface control to op-z for mixing, it might help, wirelessly

Hey Cuckoo - have you tried the Beatstep by chance? I don't have the LaunchControl, and I was hoping to use the 16 memory banks of the Beatstep to set-up custom MIDI performance/editing controls. I'm sure that I've set the MIDI up properly, and sending over USB to the Kingston USB-C Powered Hub, but getting no response whatsoever.

I get horrible digital noise/groundloops when I use connect the OP-Z to ableton :( I don’t understand why all these devices don’t have a dedicated power input! Same with all the Roland stuff lately..

Perfect video as always! Keystep is great but maybe redundant as the OP-Z's sequencer is already quite powerful. I'm about to give this a go with Arturia's MiniLab mk2, same ease to switch midi channels but with 16 assignable knobs. Hopefully this can be powered by the OP-Z!

Thanks for the great video. Love seeing the possibilities continue to evolve. I second the ask for xl template and also wonder if you have any recommendations on why my keystep will power and sync, but the keyboard won’t trigger anything on the Z. I have all midi options on. Keystep works perfectly with the digitone. Thanks again!

Aukey Usb c to usb a adapter. Then the normal keystep chord.

Have you set the micro switches at the back of the keystep to usb (not sure if this should make a difference when playing notes but it does for changing tracks)?

I can only seem to get the chord track to work on the OP-Z with the KeyStep, is there any settings that I need to change on the OP-Z to get all the tracks (kick, snare, etc) to work?

I got my KeyStep up and running with my OP-Z but the keyboard tries to sometimes arpegiate or sequence random notes which I may or may have not triggered. I don’t know how to turn this off. I’m assuming it’s because it is picking up on my KeyStep either being in arp or seq mode. Anyway I can turn this off and just have it to trigger notes for my OP-Z pattern?

buckbumble I’m having the same problem. Also trying to figure out how to start the arpeggiator without triggering the OP-Z to play or vice versa playing the OP-Z without starting the arpeggiator on the keystep. I tried turning off the transport controls in the midi controller software for the keystep but didn’t work. Very frustrating I might end up just getting a regular midi controller that isn’t a dedicated arpeggiator and sequencer.

robertbuckly76 I figured it out with a bit of tinkering. Try changing the midi switch settings on the back. If that doesn’t work, make sure midi channel 1 is assigned. You still may encounter the problem from time to time but it does seem to be the only solution.

I’m curious, if you have one, how or indeed if it would work over Bluetooth to something like a roli seaboard. That would be great, not needing even a usb cable.

iNerdier you need a BLE usb intermediary. I haven’t tried it yet but in another video I watched a guy used a WIDI Bud to receive midi signals from a seaboard.
