Hi Bjørn - do not fret you, you can never please everyone ! Your Kona test ist still the best one you can find on the internet . Nobody else made a testdrive about 13 hours or shows the real charging !!! The most other testers think that the color of the car or the chromestrips are very important :-( Please continue like this you make a great job. Wish you a nice weekend ;-)

Thanks for doing this testing. Yes, those Ampera-E numbers are much lower than my experiences driving the Bolt EV at 75 mph (about 20-25% worse). Now, I tend to get better efficiency in my Bolt EV than most other Bolt EV owners, but I think a couple of factors are in play. The LT trim appears to be more efficient than the Premier trim, plus I'm also running non-stock rims (and now tires). Regardless, in stock configuration, my Bolt EV LT still saw significantly better efficiency numbers than what you experienced. Also, the usable capacity of the Bolt EV's battery is 58 kWh according to the display. The gross battery capacity is somewhere between 60 and 64 kWh.

I'm in France border of Germany and i drive often of german's autobahn. On autobahn yes there is no limitation sometimes but full of 100 or 120km/h limitation, and full of works zone on one way at 80 or 60km/h. The result is you travel more fast on France motorway where the limitation is 130km/h most of time.

Bjørn Nyland are you sure 94 = 90 in the Ampera-e? In my Bolt EV the GPS shown speed is very similar to the speed indicated on the speedometer. I have found my speedometer to be very accurate. As a note I recently drove a round trip 310Km's at 110Km/h at a humid 26C with AC on set to 22C. I averaged 152 Wh/Km in my Bolt EV on that trip. I did it in one trip and I showed 90km's of range indicated (nominal) when I arrived home.

@@erikstephens34there is no mistake, or something like that. Speedometer in the car check your speed from rotation of the wheels. So, if you have bigger / smaller tiers, you have two different speedometer data
@erikstephens34
@erikstephens34 3 ай бұрын
@@user-fb9vj9pq3q I don't understand your comment. Your commenting on the article from 5 years ago but all Bolt EV's (and Ampera-e's) are all manufactured with the same wheels and tires (215/50R17 with a 647mm diameter). So my car would have had the exact same tire rotations and systems as the one Bjorn used.

Speedtest (up to 80 km/h) I did with Leaf showed about 13% increase pr 10km/h increase. That actually matches a bit "too good" with your results in this test ;) Have you seen higher consumption because of rain? I atually saw lower consumption in rain! Everything was set to the same (no AC/heat, just fan on same speed, radio on same volume, same use of lights an of course same stretch of road with same speed). The reason is wet air is less dense, less windresistance. The problem in that test was fogging on windows, so in reality I would get worse consumption in rain because of the need of AC or heat to keep windows clear.
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 6 жыл бұрын

Hi Bjørn nice test, thank you! if you still have the car you should re-run the test in D instead of L (One Pedal Driving) I have the feeling it actually impacts the range. And yeah the Kona is more efficient, even if you use the in D 'gear' on the motorway...

If the road is flat, I agree with you, but now you have uphill and downhill ... You can really feel the difference while driving. Maybe I will test it myself, all in the name of science ;-) If you are interested, I will report back to you.
@therandomtester9561
@therandomtester9561 6 жыл бұрын
With steady speed I see no reason for D, L, ECO, with or without CC to make any difference. In stop and go however, there is a difference. You'd think that B (or L) would be best, but what I actually see with the old Leaf is that B gives higher consumption than D. That is because of slightly change in drivingstyle, in B you rely more on the regen thus going of the accelerator later. Therby D gives a "smoother" ride, wich is the best for consumption.

So driving at 90 will yield 15 KM per KWH and at 120 less than 5 KM per KwH. so a 250KM run is possible at 120 which is half the country in Israel. That's useful. However, netheri Bolt nor Ampera or Koba arte available here. Government likes us combusting because its so easy to tax the gasoline

I really thought the chevy bolt would be more efficient then the Kona. Following the common thought of SUVs being less fuel efficient. I was surprised. 😮 The test is fair, and the Bolt is not bad at all. It's a nice little chevy. Hmm Bolt or a Kona?....bow tie vs. the big H. It's close.... You have the best reviews of EVs, better the the professional auto jurnos. You do get Tesla biased, but it's in check. Since you own a few, its understandable. With GM, when they put their heart in it, they can pull off some good cars, when they don't,....GM just drags their feet. I hope GM allowed their Bolt engineers to have design and engineering freedom.

So far, based on my experiences, the Bolt EV would be, but there are a lot of factors at play. However, even in stock configuration , my Bolt EV was seeing better efficiency at 75 mph than Bjorn was seeing in the Kona EV at 75 mph. But who knows how long it will be before I can put a Kona EV through its paces? I can't even get my hands on an Ioniq EV for testing.

Its really telling about GM how they dragged their feet in selling this as the Chevy Bolt in USA. The Bolt is still selling relatively good despite no advertising by GM. Its a real good car. Unfortunately, GM sold off Opel in Europe and priced the Ampera-E out of the market. My guess is also that Opel/PSA will not retain much intellectual property for this car. Nor will a manufacture under license from GM likely happen given the recent state of affairs between the two. Mary Barra (GM CEO) before the sale of Opel reassured us that the Ampera-E project would be secured. But I have to say I always smelled a rat.

Driving "fast" is less about absolute speeds (130 km/h is a perfectly fine cruising speed for autobahn), but about driving under full throttle (pedal to metal), which is how many lower end gasoline cars are driven on German highways. Consumption under full load is a valuable metric you can't replicate in Norway without breaking the law. Most EVs are software-limited in top speed, because going full power over longer distances they would overheat and range would drop like nothing.
