I totally understand open bolt reliability and simplicity of operation. ATF must have a ball trying to figure out why they can't make "BUMP FIRE" illegal. We the people will always find a way. We already view the ATF as the same as Gestapo. I wouldn't want their job for all the money in the world. Not as long as I have self respect. Still I will refrain from judging on a person to person basis. Even the ATF has some good guys on the team.

Good video! I have a Winchester Model 55 open bolt .22 rifle. I found a manual, but not much else. I am in the process now of taking pictures as I disassemble the gun for cleaning and inspection. The rifle shoots great and ejects out the bottom.

Great vid, glad you've featured them all. If your lucky you can find South American clones of the Gevarm. Rubi extra Venturi

The gevarm does have a safety, the charging handle pushes through the bolt into a hole on the other side.

Bruce Baxter exactly as you described. I was surprised when viewing the video the safety was not mentioned. I have the exact copy of the Gevarm. One simply has to grasp the bolt grip and pull back slightly and push to the left into the hole you describe.

Rubi Extra guns made in Argentina back in the sixties and seventies were quite similar to the Gevarm but with a Voere type safety. A friend of mine owns one that from time to time shoots full auto.

The Gevarm does have a safety. Pull the charging handle back further than the sear, and push it into the safety notch. This locks the bolt in place so a trigger squeeze won't fire the rifle.

The main reason BATF doesn't like open bolt is they are about the easiest guns out there to convert to full auto.

It would be fun to shoot an open bolt configuration. But,if you want pinpoint accuracy you gotta go bolt-action. That tiny, tiny delay from pulling the trigger to bolt-drop is too long compared to a bolt-action,same goes for striker-fire semis.

What I don't understand about an open bolt gun is how does it strip a round off the top of the magazine, chamber it and fire it, without it igniting prematurely. If the bolt is pushing the case forward until it stops against the chamber. It seems to me, it either would fire on contact with the case or not have enough energy to compress the rim of the cartridge at the end of the bolt travel. Please explain for me John.

That's how they fire. These aren't hammer fired. The bolt stays open, and when the trigger is pulled the bolt closes, it strips the cartridge out of the magazine, then up, in to the chamber. When the bolt chambers the round the machined, fixed firing pin strikes the primer firing the cartridge. Then, recoil force created by the round being fired pushes the bolt back open, extracting the casing. The bolt then stays back, locked in the rearward position by the sear. Then it repeats the process when the trigger is pulled again. A lot of machine guns (especially sub-machine guns) worked the same way. Such as the Thompson variants, Sten, Uzi, Mac-10 and a few others.

the fixed firing pin open bolt (.22 l.r) guns have the power to strip a round out of the magazine safely...it's when the bolt face, bullet & chamber meet that creates enough force to ignite the round..for safety the primer in a rim fire round is harder to ignite than a center fire,as the entire primer is exposed..hope this helps answer your question, if not message me back as i'm always happy to help anyone with gun troubles ..i know it sounds like it shouldn't work but it just does...

The gevarm uses the magazine to bounce the empty shell out the side. The two sides are offset.
